TITLE: "IS THERE OIL IN YOUR LAMP?"
TEXT: Matthew 25:1-13
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
INTRODUCTION
The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-13 is a profound teaching from Jesus about being prepared for His coming. The key question it raises for each believer is: "Is there oil in your lamp?" This sermon explores the significance of the oil, the lamp, and the need for readiness in our spiritual lives.
1. UNDERSTANDING THE PARABLE (Matthew 25:1-13)
- The parable of the ten virgins presents a wedding scenario. Ten virgins took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five were wise and five were foolish. The wise virgins took oil with their lamps, while the foolish took none.
- When the bridegroom delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. At midnight, a cry announced the bridegroom’s arrival. The wise virgins had enough oil to light their lamps and meet him, while the foolish ones realized their lamps were going out and had no oil to replenish them.
- The foolish virgins went to buy oil, but by the time they returned, the door was shut, and they were denied entry, illustrating the importance of being prepared.
2. THE LAMP AND THE OIL: SYMBOLISM AND MEANING
- The Lamp
The lamp represents our Christian testimony and outward profession of faith (Psalm 119:105). It is what people see—our actions, words, and deeds.
- The Oil
Oil in the Bible often symbolizes the Holy Spirit (Zechariah 4:1-6). It is what fuels our spiritual lives, empowers our ministries, and keeps our faith vibrant and alive. Without oil, the lamp becomes ineffective.
- The difference between the wise and foolish virgins is the presence or absence of the oil. It is not enough to have a lamp; there must be oil. This highlights the necessity of a living, vibrant relationship with the Holy Spirit.
3. LESSONS FROM THE PARABLE
- The Necessity of Preparation:
Just as the wise virgins prepared for the unexpected delay, we must be spiritually prepared at all times. This preparation involves maintaining a consistent prayer life, engaging with Scripture, and yielding to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
- The Danger of Spiritual Neglect:
The foolish virgins' neglect to bring extra oil represents a lack of spiritual vigilance. A superficial relationship with God—one that lacks depth and is not Spirit-led—will not stand in times of testing or when Christ returns.
- Personal Responsibility:
The wise virgins could not share their oil with the foolish ones. Salvation is personal. No one can believe, prepare, or be filled with the Holy Spirit for you.
- The Certainty of Christ's Return:
The cry at midnight signifies the suddenness of Christ's return. “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour” (Matthew 25:13). We must live in a state of readiness, understanding that Christ can return at any time.
4. PRACTICAL STEPS TO KEEP OIL IN YOUR LAMP
- Maintain a Consistent Prayer Life:
Prayer keeps us connected to God and helps us receive fresh oil from the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 6:18).
- Feed on God's Word:
The Word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). It strengthens our faith and keeps our spiritual lamps burning brightly.
- Live a Spirit-Filled Life:
Daily ask for the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This involves surrendering to God, living a holy life, and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you in all things (Galatians 5:16-25).
- Be Watchful and Alert:
Jesus warns us to be vigilant. Do not become spiritually complacent or distracted by the cares of this world (1 Peter 5:8).
CONCLUSION
The parable of the ten virgins serves as a powerful reminder to every believer: "Is there oil in your lamp?" We are called to be wise, to prepare, and to keep our lamps burning until the Bridegroom comes. Let us examine our lives and ensure that we are filled with the Holy Spirit, living in readiness for the return of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Call to Action:
Today, make a commitment to seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit in your life. Let your lamp burn bright with the oil of God's Spirit, and be ready for the coming of the Lord.
