THE GREAT COMMISSION

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 28:16-20

Key Verse: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” (Matthew 28:19 KJV)

Supporting Texts: Mark 16:15-20; Acts 1:8; Romans 10:13-15; 2 Corinthians 5:18-20; John 20:21; Daniel 12:3

Description: The Great Commission is Christ's final command to His followers, calling them to make disciples, spread the gospel, and advance God's kingdom throughout the world.

INTRODUCTION
The Gospel of Matthew concludes with one of the most important assignments ever given to humanity. After His resurrection, Jesus gathered His disciples and entrusted them with a divine mandate known as the Great Commission. This commission was not merely a suggestion or a recommendation; it was a command from the risen Lord to carry the message of salvation to every nation. The responsibility of spreading the gospel did not end with the first disciples but continues with every believer today.

The Great Commission was given after Jesus declared that all authority in heaven and on earth had been given unto Him. This means that believers carry out their mission under the authority and backing of the King of kings. The success of the mission does not depend on human ability, resources, or wisdom alone but on the power and authority of Christ who sends His people into the world.

In a generation marked by spiritual darkness, confusion, and moral decline, the Great Commission remains as urgent as ever. Millions still need to hear the gospel, experience God's saving grace, and become disciples of Jesus Christ. Every believer has a role to play in fulfilling this divine mandate. Understanding the Great Commission helps us align our lives with God's purpose and participate in His redemptive work on earth.

1. THE GREAT COMMISSION IS A DIVINE COMMAND
Jesus gave the commission as an authoritative instruction to His followers.

a) Christ Possesses All Authority (Matthew 28:18)
Jesus established His authority before issuing the command.

b) The Command Is for Every Believer (Mark 16:15)
The responsibility of sharing the gospel belongs to all followers of Christ.

c) Obedience Is Not Optional (John 14:15)
Love for Christ is demonstrated through obedience to His commands.

d) God's Mission Must Be Prioritized (Matthew 6:33)
Kingdom work should occupy a central place in the believer's life.

Biblical Example: Jonah was commanded to preach to Nineveh and learned the importance of obeying God's assignment (Jonah 3:1-5).

2. THE COMMISSION INVOLVES GOING TO THE WORLD
The gospel is meant to reach every tribe, nation, and people group.

a) The Message Is Universal (Matthew 28:19)
The gospel is intended for all nations without distinction.

b) Believers Must Leave Their Comfort Zones (Acts 8:4)
The spread of the gospel often requires sacrifice and movement.

c) Every Person Needs Salvation (Romans 3:23)
All humanity stands in need of God's grace.

d) God Desires All People to Be Saved (1 Timothy 2:4)
The heart of God is for the salvation of the world.

Biblical Example: Philip obeyed God's leading and brought the gospel to the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-39).

3. THE COMMISSION IS ABOUT MAKING DISCIPLES
The goal is not merely obtaining converts but developing mature followers of Christ.

a) Teaching Is Essential (Matthew 28:20)
New believers must be instructed in God's Word.

b) Spiritual Growth Is Expected (2 Peter 3:18)
Disciples are called to continually mature in faith.

c) Christian Character Must Be Developed (Galatians 5:22-23)
Discipleship produces Christlike behaviour.

d) Multiplication Is God's Pattern (2 Timothy 2:2)
Disciples should help others become disciples.

Biblical Example: Jesus spent three years discipling the twelve apostles before sending them into ministry (Mark 3:13-15).

4. THE COMMISSION REQUIRES THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Effective ministry is impossible without divine empowerment.

a) The Holy Spirit Gives Power (Acts 1:8)
Believers receive supernatural ability to witness effectively.

b) The Spirit Provides Boldness (Acts 4:31)
God enables believers to proclaim the gospel fearlessly.

c) The Spirit Convicts Hearts (John 16:8)
Only God can bring genuine conviction and transformation.

d) Signs Follow the Gospel Message (Mark 16:17-18)
God confirms His Word through His power.

Biblical Example: Peter's Spirit-empowered sermon resulted in the salvation of about three thousand people (Acts 2:37-41).

5. THE COMMISSION INVOLVES BAPTISM AND IDENTIFICATION WITH CHRIST
Believers are called to publicly identify with Jesus.

a) Baptism Is an Act of Obedience (Matthew 28:19)
Jesus instructed His followers to baptize new believers.

b) Baptism Symbolizes New Life (Romans 6:4)
It represents death to sin and resurrection with Christ.

c) Public Identification Strengthens Faith (Acts 8:36-38)
Believers publicly declare their commitment to Christ.

d) Baptism Reflects Kingdom Membership (Galatians 3:27)
It signifies inclusion in the family of God.

Biblical Example: The Ethiopian eunuch was baptized immediately after believing the gospel (Acts 8:36-39).

6. CHRIST'S PRESENCE GUARANTEES SUCCESS
The Great Commission comes with a powerful promise.

a) Jesus Promised His Presence (Matthew 28:20)
Believers never labour alone in God's work.

b) His Presence Brings Courage (Joshua 1:9)
God's companionship removes fear and uncertainty.

c) His Presence Sustains Ministry (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Divine grace strengthens believers through challenges.

d) His Presence Guarantees Ultimate Victory (Romans 8:31)
The kingdom of God will continue advancing because Christ is with His Church.

Biblical Example: Paul endured hardship and persecution because the Lord assured him of His presence and protection (Acts 18:9-10).

CONCLUSION
The Great Commission is the heartbeat of Christ's mission on earth. Before ascending into heaven, Jesus entrusted His followers with the responsibility of taking the gospel to all nations, making disciples, baptizing believers, and teaching them to obey God's Word. This divine mandate remains the primary assignment of the Church today.

Every believer has a role in fulfilling the Great Commission. Whether through preaching, teaching, praying, giving, mentoring, or personal evangelism, we are all called to participate in God's redemptive plan. As we obey Christ's command and depend on the power of the Holy Spirit, we can be confident that His presence will accompany us until the mission is complete. Let us therefore commit ourselves afresh to the work of advancing God's kingdom and making disciples of all nations.

FEAR NOT: HE IS RISEN

FEAR NOT: HE IS RISEN

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 28:1-10

Key Verse: “And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said...” (Matthew 28:5-6 KJV)

Supporting Texts: Mark 16:6; Luke 24:5-7; John 20:19-20; 1 Corinthians 15:20-22; Romans 8:11; Revelation 1:17-18

Description: The resurrection of Jesus Christ removes fear and fills believers with hope, victory, confidence, and assurance of eternal life.

INTRODUCTION
Matthew 28 records the most glorious event in human history: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. After enduring betrayal, suffering, crucifixion, and burial, Jesus rose triumphantly from the grave exactly as He had promised. When the women came to the tomb early in the morning, expecting to find the body of Jesus, they were met with a heavenly announcement that changed the course of history forever: "Fear not... He is risen."

The resurrection is the foundation of the Christian faith. Without the resurrection, the cross would merely represent the death of a good man. However, because Jesus rose from the dead, His sacrifice was accepted by God, His claims were validated, and His victory over sin, death, and Satan was established forever. The empty tomb became the ultimate proof that Christ is Lord and that His promises can be trusted.

The message "Fear Not: He Is Risen" remains relevant today. People are surrounded by fear arising from uncertainty, sickness, economic challenges, persecution, and the unknown future. Yet the resurrection of Jesus provides hope in every circumstance. Because Christ lives, believers can face life with courage, confidence, and unwavering faith.

1. THE RESURRECTION REMOVES THE FEAR OF DEATH
The greatest fear of humanity was conquered through Christ's resurrection.

a) Jesus Defeated Death (Matthew 28:6)
The empty tomb testified that death could not hold the Son of God.

b) Christ Holds the Keys of Death (Revelation 1:18)
Jesus has complete authority over death and the grave.

c) Eternal Life Is Guaranteed (John 11:25-26)
Those who believe in Christ will live even after physical death.

d) Death Has Lost Its Sting (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)
The resurrection transformed death from a defeat into a victory.

Biblical Example: Lazarus was raised from the dead by Jesus, demonstrating Christ's power over death (John 11:43-44).

2. THE RESURRECTION CONFIRMS GOD'S PROMISES
The resurrection proves that God always fulfils His Word.

a) Jesus Rose As He Predicted (Matthew 28:6)
Everything happened according to His promise.

b) God's Word Never Fails (Isaiah 55:11)
The resurrection validates the reliability of Scripture.

c) Faith Is Strengthened Through Fulfilled Prophecy (Luke 24:6-8)
The disciples remembered Christ's words after His resurrection.

d) Believers Can Trust God's Promises Today (Numbers 23:19)
If God fulfilled the promise of resurrection, He will fulfil every other promise.

Biblical Example: God's promise to Abraham regarding Isaac was fulfilled despite seeming impossibilities (Genesis 21:1-3).

3. THE RESURRECTION BRINGS VICTORY OVER FEAR
The risen Christ replaces fear with confidence.

a) The Angel's Message Was "Fear Not" (Matthew 28:5)
God's first message concerning the resurrection was one of comfort and courage.

b) Christ Brings Peace to Troubled Hearts (John 20:19-20)
The risen Lord greeted His fearful disciples with peace.

c) God's Presence Dispels Fear (Isaiah 41:10)
Believers need not fear because God is with them.

d) Perfect Love Casts Out Fear (1 John 4:18)
The love demonstrated through the resurrection overcomes fear and anxiety.

Biblical Example: Joshua was encouraged to be strong and courageous because God was with him (Joshua 1:9).

4. THE RESURRECTION GIVES BELIEVERS A LIVING HOPE
Because Christ lives, believers have a glorious future.

a) Hope Is Anchored in a Living Saviour (1 Peter 1:3)
The resurrection provides living hope rather than empty optimism.

b) Trials Are Temporary (Romans 8:18)
Present sufferings cannot compare with future glory.

c) Heaven Is Guaranteed for Believers (John 14:1-3)
Jesus has prepared an eternal home for His followers.

d) Despair Is Replaced with Expectation (Psalm 42:11)
The resurrection gives reason to trust God in difficult seasons.

Biblical Example: Job maintained hope in God despite suffering, believing in future redemption (Job 19:25-27).

5. THE RESURRECTION RELEASES BELIEVERS INTO DIVINE ASSIGNMENT
The risen Christ commissions His followers for service.

a) The Women Were Sent with Good News (Matthew 28:7)
They became the first witnesses of the resurrection.

b) The Gospel Must Be Proclaimed (Matthew 28:19-20)
The resurrection message is for all nations.

c) Divine Power Accompanies the Mission (Acts 1:8)
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to fulfil their assignment.

d) Every Believer Has a Kingdom Purpose (Ephesians 2:10)
God calls His people to meaningful service.

Biblical Example: Peter became a bold preacher after encountering the risen Christ (Acts 2:14-41).

6. THE RISEN CHRIST IS PRESENT WITH HIS PEOPLE
The resurrection assures believers of Christ's continual presence.

a) Jesus Met the Women Personally (Matthew 28:9)
The risen Lord revealed Himself to His followers.

b) Christ Is Always with His Church (Matthew 28:20)
His presence remains with believers until the end of the age.

c) The Holy Spirit Reveals Christ Today (John 14:16-18)
Believers experience Christ's presence through the Spirit.

d) God's Presence Guarantees Victory (Romans 8:31)
If God is for us, no opposition can ultimately prevail.

Biblical Example: The disciples on the road to Emmaus encountered the risen Christ and their hearts burned within them (Luke 24:13-32).

CONCLUSION
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest declaration of victory ever made. The angel's words, "Fear not: He is risen," continue to bring hope and assurance to believers around the world. Through His resurrection, Jesus conquered death, fulfilled God's promises, defeated fear, and secured eternal life for all who trust in Him.

As believers, we must live in the reality of the empty tomb. Fear should not dominate our lives because our Saviour lives. No challenge is greater than His power, no situation is beyond His control, and no promise of God can fail. Let us walk in faith, confidence, and joy, knowing that the risen Christ is with us and that His victory is our victory.

1. Father, thank You for the resurrection of Jesus Christ in Jesus name.

2. Lord, let the power of the resurrection be manifested in my life in Jesus name.

THE COST OF REDEMPTION

THE COST OF REDEMPTION

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 27:27-54

Key Verse: “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” (1 Corinthians 6:20 KJV)

Supporting Texts: Isaiah 53:4-12; John 19:16-30; Romans 5:8; 1 Peter 1:18-19; Hebrews 9:12-14; Ephesians 1:7

Description: Redemption was secured through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, revealing the immeasurable price God paid to save humanity from sin and eternal separation.

INTRODUCTION
The redemption of humanity is the greatest demonstration of God's love and grace. Matthew 27 records the suffering, crucifixion, and death of Jesus Christ, showing the tremendous price that was paid for mankind's salvation. Redemption was not obtained through silver, gold, human effort, or religious works. It required the precious blood of the spotless Lamb of God. Every wound Christ endured and every moment of suffering He experienced was part of the divine plan to purchase humanity's freedom from sin.

Before Christ came, humanity was trapped under the bondage of sin and unable to save itself. The sacrificial system of the Old Testament pointed toward a greater sacrifice that would one day provide complete atonement. Animal sacrifices could temporarily cover sin, but they could not permanently remove it. Jesus came as the perfect sacrifice whose death would accomplish eternal redemption for all who believe.

Understanding the cost of redemption should produce gratitude, worship, and wholehearted devotion in every believer. When we recognize what Christ endured to save us, we gain a deeper appreciation for God's love and a greater desire to live lives that honour Him. The cross reminds us that salvation is free to receive, but it was infinitely costly to provide.

1. REDEMPTION REQUIRED THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST
Humanity's salvation could only be secured through the death of Jesus.

a) Sin Demanded a Penalty (Romans 6:23)
The wages of sin is death, and justice required payment for humanity's rebellion.

b) Animal Sacrifices Were Insufficient (Hebrews 10:1-4)
The Old Testament sacrifices pointed to the need for a perfect sacrifice.

c) Jesus Became the Perfect Lamb (John 1:29)
Christ came to take away the sins of the world.

d) His Sacrifice Was Once and for All (Hebrews 10:10)
Jesus accomplished what no other sacrifice could achieve.

Biblical Example: The Passover lamb protected Israel from judgment and foreshadowed Christ, the true Lamb of God (Exodus 12:1-13).

2. THE COST OF REDEMPTION INCLUDED GREAT SUFFERING
Christ endured immense suffering to accomplish salvation.

a) He Was Mocked and Humiliated (Matthew 27:27-31)
Jesus willingly endured shame and ridicule for our sake.

b) He Was Physically Wounded (Isaiah 53:5)
His suffering brought healing and restoration to humanity.

c) He Carried the Weight of Sin (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Though sinless, Christ bore the sins of the world.

d) He Endured the Cross (Philippians 2:8)
Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient unto death.

Biblical Example: Isaac carrying the wood for his sacrifice foreshadowed Christ carrying the burden of redemption (Genesis 22:6).

3. REDEMPTION WAS MOTIVATED BY GOD'S LOVE
The cross reveals the depth of God's love for mankind.

a) God Loved Humanity Despite Sin (Romans 5:8)
Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

b) The Father Gave His Son Freely (John 3:16)
God's love moved Him to provide salvation.

c) Christ Loved Us Sacrificially (Galatians 2:20)
Jesus willingly gave Himself for our redemption.

d) Divine Love Pursues the Lost (Luke 19:10)
God's desire is to restore people to Himself.

Biblical Example: Hosea's redemption of Gomer illustrates God's faithful love toward undeserving people (Hosea 3:1-3).

4. REDEMPTION BROUGHT FREEDOM FROM SIN
Through Christ's sacrifice, believers are liberated from bondage.

a) Sin's Debt Was Cancelled (Colossians 2:14)
The record of our offences was nailed to the cross.

b) Believers Are No Longer Slaves to Sin (Romans 6:6-7)
Christ's death broke the power of sin.

c) Forgiveness Is Available to All (Ephesians 1:7)
Redemption provides complete forgiveness through His blood.

d) New Life Is Possible Through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Those who trust in Christ become new creations.

Biblical Example: Israel's deliverance from Egyptian bondage symbolizes the believer's freedom through redemption (Exodus 14:13-31).

5. REDEMPTION RESTORED OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
The cross removed the barrier that separated humanity from God.

a) Reconciliation Was Accomplished (Colossians 1:20)
Peace with God became possible through Christ's blood.

b) Access to God's Presence Was Opened (Matthew 27:51)
The torn veil symbolized restored fellowship with God.

c) Believers Become Children of God (John 1:12)
Redemption brings us into God's family.

d) Eternal Life Is Granted (John 17:3)
Those redeemed by Christ receive everlasting life.

Biblical Example: The prodigal son's restoration to his father illustrates the reconciliation made possible through God's grace (Luke 15:20-24).

6. REDEEMED PEOPLE MUST LIVE FOR GOD'S GLORY
The price paid for redemption calls for a life of devotion and obedience.

a) We Belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:20)
Christ purchased us through His sacrifice.

b) Gratitude Should Produce Worship (Psalm 103:1-5)
Believers should continually thank God for His salvation.

c) Holiness Reflects Redemption (1 Peter 1:15-16)
Those redeemed by Christ should pursue godly living.

d) The Gospel Must Be Shared (Matthew 28:19-20)
Redeemed people are called to proclaim the message of salvation.

Biblical Example: Zacchaeus demonstrated genuine transformation after encountering Christ, showing the fruit of redemption (Luke 19:1-10).

CONCLUSION
The cost of redemption was immeasurable. Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, endured suffering, rejection, shame, and death to secure humanity's salvation. The cross reveals both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God's love. Redemption was not purchased with earthly wealth but with the precious blood of Christ, making it the most valuable gift ever given.

Every believer should live in the light of this great truth. Since Christ paid such a high price for our salvation, we should respond with gratitude, obedience, worship, and faithful service. Let us never take redemption for granted but continually honour the One who gave His life so that we might live eternally with God.

THE VEIL WAS TORN

THE VEIL WAS TORN

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 27:45-54

Key Verse: “And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.” (Matthew 27:51 KJV)

Supporting Texts: Hebrews 10:19-22; Hebrews 9:6-12; Exodus 26:31-33; Ephesians 2:13-18; Colossians 1:20-22; John 14:6

Description: The tearing of the temple veil at Christ's death signified the removal of barriers between God and humanity and the opening of direct access to His presence through Jesus Christ.

INTRODUCTION
One of the most significant events that occurred at the death of Jesus Christ was the tearing of the temple veil. Matthew records that immediately after Jesus yielded up His spirit, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom. This was not merely a physical occurrence but a profound spiritual declaration from God. The veil had long symbolized separation between a holy God and sinful humanity. Its tearing announced that a new and living way into God's presence had been established through the sacrifice of Christ.

Under the Old Testament system, the veil separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, where God's manifested presence dwelt. Only the high priest could enter beyond the veil, and only once each year on the Day of Atonement. This restriction reminded Israel that sin created a barrier between humanity and God. No ordinary person could freely approach God's holy presence because the problem of sin had not yet been fully addressed.

When Jesus died on the cross, He accomplished what animal sacrifices could never achieve. Through His perfect sacrifice, the barrier of sin was removed, and access to God became available to all who believe. The torn veil stands as a powerful symbol of redemption, reconciliation, and unrestricted fellowship with God through Jesus Christ.

1. THE VEIL REPRESENTED SEPARATION FROM GOD
The temple veil symbolized the distance between a holy God and sinful humanity.

a) Sin Created a Barrier Between God and Man (Isaiah 59:2)
Human sin separated mankind from intimate fellowship with God.

b) The Veil Restricted Access (Exodus 26:33)
Only selected individuals could approach the Most Holy Place.

c) God's Holiness Required Atonement (Leviticus 16:2)
Access to God's presence required sacrificial cleansing.

d) The Old Covenant Revealed Humanity's Need (Hebrews 9:8)
The sacrificial system pointed to a greater solution yet to come.

Biblical Example: After Adam and Eve sinned, they were expelled from Eden, illustrating how sin separates people from God's presence (Genesis 3:22-24).

2. CHRIST'S SACRIFICE REMOVED THE BARRIER OF SIN
The death of Jesus accomplished complete atonement for humanity.

a) Jesus Became the Perfect Sacrifice (Hebrews 9:12)
His blood secured eternal redemption for all who believe.

b) The Penalty of Sin Was Paid (Romans 6:23)
Christ bore the punishment that humanity deserved.

c) Reconciliation Was Accomplished (Colossians 1:20-22)
The cross restored peace between God and humanity.

d) The Work Was Complete (John 19:30)
Jesus fully accomplished the Father's redemptive plan.

Biblical Example: The Passover lamb's blood protected Israel from judgment, foreshadowing Christ's sacrificial work (Exodus 12:7-13).

3. THE TORN VEIL PROVIDED DIRECT ACCESS TO GOD
Believers no longer need a human mediator to approach God.

a) Access Is Now Open to All Believers (Hebrews 10:19-20)
Through Christ, every believer can enter God's presence confidently.

b) Jesus Is Our Great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-16)
Christ continually intercedes on behalf of His people.

c) Fellowship with God Has Been Restored (1 John 1:3)
Believers can enjoy a personal relationship with God.

d) Prayer Becomes a Privilege of Every Child of God (Philippians 4:6)
We can approach God directly with our needs and concerns.

Biblical Example: Stephen saw heaven opened and Jesus standing at God's right hand, demonstrating the believer's access to God through Christ (Acts 7:55-56).

4. THE VEIL WAS TORN FROM TOP TO BOTTOM
God Himself initiated the work of salvation.

a) Salvation Is God's Work (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Human effort could never remove the barrier of sin.

b) God Took the Initiative in Redemption (John 3:16)
The Father provided the means of reconciliation.

c) Grace Is Greater Than Human Achievement (Titus 3:5)
Salvation is based on God's mercy rather than human works.

d) Christ Completed What Humanity Could Not (Romans 5:8)
Jesus accomplished redemption through His sacrifice.

Biblical Example: God provided a ram for Abraham's sacrifice, demonstrating that divine provision precedes human effort (Genesis 22:13-14).

5. THE TORN VEIL CREATED A NEW COVENANT RELATIONSHIP
Believers now live under a better covenant established by Christ.

a) The Old Covenant Pointed to Christ (Hebrews 10:1)
The sacrifices and ceremonies foreshadowed His coming.

b) Christ Established a Better Covenant (Hebrews 8:6)
The new covenant provides lasting forgiveness and transformation.

c) God's Law Is Written on Believing Hearts (Hebrews 8:10)
The Holy Spirit enables believers to obey God.

d) Intimacy with God Is Now Available (Jeremiah 31:33-34)
Every believer can know God personally.

Biblical Example: Moses received the covenant on Mount Sinai, but Christ established the new covenant through His blood (Exodus 24:7-8; Luke 22:20).

6. BELIEVERS MUST LIVE IN THE REALITY OF OPEN ACCESS
The torn veil calls believers to confidently approach God.

a) Draw Near with Confidence (Hebrews 10:22)
Believers should approach God with faith and assurance.

b) Maintain a Life of Prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Direct access to God should encourage continual communion with Him.

c) Walk in Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16)
Access to God's presence should inspire godly living.

d) Share the Message of Reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-20)
Believers should proclaim the good news of restored fellowship with God.

Biblical Example: The Apostle Paul boldly preached reconciliation through Christ because he understood the reality of the new covenant (Acts 20:24).

CONCLUSION
The tearing of the temple veil was one of the most significant signs accompanying the death of Jesus Christ. It declared that the barrier of sin had been removed and that access to God's presence was now available through the finished work of Christ. No longer would people depend upon repeated sacrifices or limited access through earthly priests. Jesus became the perfect sacrifice and eternal High Priest for all who believe.

Today, every believer can approach God with confidence, knowing that Christ has opened the way. The torn veil reminds us that we are no longer separated from God but welcomed into His presence through grace. Let us therefore live with gratitude, draw near to God continually, and rejoice in the privilege of fellowship made possible through the cross of Jesus Christ.

PRAYER POINTS

JESUS BORE OUR SHAME

JESUS BORE OUR SHAME

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 27:27-44

Key Verse: “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2 KJV)

Supporting Texts: Isaiah 53:3-5; Psalm 22:6-8; Hebrews 12:2; Galatians 3:13; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 10:11

Description: Jesus willingly endured humiliation, rejection, and shame on the cross so that believers might receive acceptance, honour, and redemption through Him.

INTRODUCTION
One of the most painful aspects of Christ's suffering was not merely the physical agony of the cross but the shame He endured on behalf of humanity. Matthew 27 vividly describes how Jesus was mocked, insulted, beaten, stripped, and publicly humiliated by soldiers, religious leaders, and the crowd. The Son of God, who deserved all honour and worship, willingly accepted disgrace and rejection so that sinners could be reconciled to God.

Shame entered the human experience through sin. After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they became aware of their nakedness and hid themselves in shame. Since then, humanity has struggled with guilt, condemnation, rejection, and disgrace. Jesus came to deal not only with the penalty of sin but also with the shame associated with it. Through His sacrifice, He bore everything that separated humanity from God's acceptance and favour.

The message of the cross reminds believers that Christ's suffering was substitutionary. He took our place and carried our shame so that we could receive His righteousness. Because of what Jesus accomplished at Calvary, believers no longer have to live under the burden of condemnation, rejection, or spiritual disgrace. Instead, they can walk confidently in the identity and acceptance found in Christ.

1. JESUS ENDURED PUBLIC HUMILIATION FOR OUR SAKE
The suffering of Christ included severe emotional and public humiliation.

a) He Was Mocked by the Soldiers (Matthew 27:27-31)
The Roman soldiers ridiculed Jesus, mocking His kingship and dignity.

b) He Was Stripped of Honour (Matthew 27:28)
Jesus experienced public disgrace and humiliation before the crowd.

c) He Was Scorned by the People (Matthew 27:39-44)
Those passing by insulted and ridiculed Him.

d) He Accepted Shame Willingly (Hebrews 12:2)
Christ endured humiliation because of His love and commitment to God's plan.

Biblical Example: Joseph experienced public humiliation when he was falsely accused and imprisoned, yet God eventually exalted him (Genesis 39:19-23; 41:39-44).

2. JESUS TOOK UPON HIMSELF THE SHAME OF SIN
Christ bore what belonged to humanity.

a) Sin Brought Shame into the World (Genesis 3:7-10)
Human shame originated from disobedience to God.

b) Christ Became Our Substitute (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Jesus took upon Himself the consequences of human sin.

c) He Bore Our Reproach (Isaiah 53:4-5)
The suffering of Christ was for the healing and restoration of humanity.

d) He Removed Our Condemnation (Romans 8:1)
Believers are no longer condemned because of Christ's sacrifice.

Biblical Example: The scapegoat carried away Israel's sins on the Day of Atonement, foreshadowing Christ's redemptive work (Leviticus 16:21-22).

3. THE CROSS DESTROYED THE POWER OF SHAME
The cross provides freedom from guilt and disgrace.

a) Shame No Longer Defines Believers (Romans 10:11)
Those who trust in Christ will never be put to shame.

b) Christ Restores Broken Lives (Joel 2:25-27)
God restores what sin and shame have damaged.

c) The Blood of Jesus Cleanses Completely (1 John 1:7)
Forgiveness removes both guilt and condemnation.

d) God's Grace Brings Acceptance (Ephesians 1:6)
Believers are accepted in Christ regardless of their past.

Biblical Example: Rahab's life of shame was transformed by faith, and she became part of God's redemptive plan (Joshua 2:1-21; Matthew 1:5).

4. JESUS IDENTIFIED WITH THE REJECTED
Christ understands the pain of rejection because He experienced it Himself.

a) He Was Rejected by His Own People (John 1:11)
Many refused to recognize Him as the Messiah.

b) He Was Forsaken by Friends (Matthew 26:56)
His disciples abandoned Him in His hour of need.

c) He Experienced Deep Sorrow (Isaiah 53:3)
Jesus was acquainted with grief and suffering.

d) He Comforts the Rejected (Psalm 34:18)
The Lord draws near to those who are brokenhearted.

Biblical Example: David experienced rejection by his family and persecution from Saul, yet God ultimately exalted him (1 Samuel 16:11-13).

5. CHRIST EXCHANGED OUR SHAME FOR HIS GLORY
The work of Christ involves a divine exchange.

a) He Bore Our Curse (Galatians 3:13)
Jesus became a curse so believers could receive blessing.

b) He Gives Beauty for Ashes (Isaiah 61:3)
God replaces mourning and shame with joy and restoration.

c) He Clothes Believers with Righteousness (Isaiah 61:10)
Christ covers His people with His righteousness.

d) He Restores Honour to the Redeemed (1 Peter 2:9)
Believers are called into a position of dignity and purpose.

Biblical Example: Mephibosheth moved from shame and obscurity to honour at the king's table because of David's grace (2 Samuel 9:1-13).

6. BELIEVERS MUST LIVE IN THE FREEDOM CHRIST PURCHASED
Since Christ bore our shame, we must refuse to live under condemnation.

a) Embrace Your Identity in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Believers are new creations with a new standing before God.

b) Reject Condemnation (Romans 8:1)
The enemy seeks to remind believers of their past, but Christ offers freedom.

c) Walk in Confidence and Faith (Hebrews 4:16)
Believers can approach God boldly because of Christ's sacrifice.

d) Share the Message of Hope (Matthew 28:19-20)
Those who have experienced God's grace should proclaim it to others.

Biblical Example: The woman caught in adultery received mercy from Jesus and was given a new opportunity to live differently (John 8:1-11).

CONCLUSION
Jesus bore unimaginable shame so that humanity could be restored to honour and fellowship with God. He was mocked, rejected, beaten, and crucified, yet He endured it all willingly because of His love for sinners. Through His sacrifice, the power of shame was broken, and the door to forgiveness, acceptance, and restoration was opened.

Every believer must embrace the truth that Christ has already carried their shame. There is no need to live under guilt, rejection, or condemnation. Through faith in Jesus, we receive a new identity, a new standing before God, and the assurance that we are loved and accepted. Let us walk confidently in the freedom that Christ purchased through His suffering on the cross.

Description: The cross of Christ is the greatest demonstration of God's love and the source of salvation, redemption, victory, and reconciliation for all who believe.

INTRODUCTION
The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the central event of the Christian faith. Matthew 27 records the suffering, death, and sacrifice of the Son of God on Calvary. What appeared to many as a moment of defeat was, in reality, the greatest victory in human history. Through the cross, God accomplished His eternal plan of redemption and opened the way for sinful humanity to be reconciled to Him.

The cross was not an accident nor merely the result of human cruelty. Jesus willingly endured the shame, pain, and rejection of crucifixion because of His love for mankind. Every insult, every wound, and every drop of blood shed on the cross carried redemptive significance. Through His sacrifice, Jesus paid the penalty for sin that humanity could never pay.

Today, the message of the cross remains as powerful as ever. It is the foundation of salvation, the source of forgiveness, and the basis of the believer's victory over sin and Satan. Understanding the power of the cross helps believers appreciate the depth of God's love and live in the fullness of Christ's finished work.

1. THE CROSS REVEALS THE LOVE OF GOD
The cross is the ultimate expression of God's love for humanity.

The Father gave His Son because of His great love for the world.

d) The Cross Demonstrates Divine Mercy (Titus 3:5)
Salvation is based on God's mercy rather than human merit.

Biblical Example: Abraham's willingness to offer Isaac foreshadowed God's willingness to give His Son for humanity's redemption (Genesis 22:1-14).

2. THE CROSS PROVIDES FORGIVENESS OF SINS
Through the cross, the penalty of sin was fully paid.

a) Christ Bore Our Sins (Isaiah 53:5-6)

The blood of Jesus cleanses believers from all sin.

c) Forgiveness Is Available to All (Acts 10:43)
Everyone who believes in Christ receives remission of sins.

d) Condemnation Is Removed (Romans 8:1)
Those who are in Christ are no longer under judgment.

Biblical Example: The Passover lamb's blood protected Israel from judgment, foreshadowing the blood of Christ (Exodus 12:13).

3. THE CROSS DEFEATED SATAN AND THE POWERS OF DARKNESS
What appeared to be Satan's victory became his greatest defeat.

a) Christ Triumphed Over Principalities (Colossians 2:14-15)
Through the cross, Jesus disarmed spiritual powers and authorities.

b) The Works of the Devil Were Destroyed (1 John 3:8)
Christ came to break the power of Satan over humanity.

c) Believers Share in Christ's Victory (Luke 10:19)
The victory won at Calvary belongs to those who trust in Christ.

d) Fear Has Been Broken (Hebrews 2:14-15)
Jesus conquered the power of death and liberated believers from fear.

Biblical Example: David's victory over Goliath foreshadowed Christ's triumph over Satan on behalf of His people (1 Samuel 17:45-51).

4. THE CROSS RECONCILES HUMANITY TO GOD
The separation caused by sin was removed through Christ's sacrifice.

Christ reconciled humanity to God through His blood.

c) Believers Become Children of God (John 1:12)
The cross opens the door to a new relationship with God.

d) Fellowship Is Restored (2 Corinthians 5:18-19)
The barrier between God and humanity has been removed.

Biblical Example: The return of the prodigal son illustrates the reconciliation made possible through God's grace (Luke 15:20-24).

5. THE CROSS TRANSFORMS LIVES
The power of the cross changes people from the inside out.

a) Old Things Pass Away (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Those who come to Christ become new creations.

The benefits of the cross must be personally received.

a) Salvation Comes Through Faith (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Following Christ requires commitment and surrender.

c) The Cross Must Be Proclaimed (1 Corinthians 1:18)
The message of the cross remains God's power unto salvation.

d) Christ Must Be Honoured Daily (Galatians 6:14)
Believers should live lives that reflect gratitude for His sacrifice.

Biblical Example: The thief on the cross believed in Jesus and received the promise of eternal life (Luke 23:39-43).

CONCLUSION
The power of the cross is the foundation of the Christian faith. Through Christ's sacrifice, God's love was revealed, sins were forgiven, Satan was defeated, and humanity was reconciled to God. The cross transformed what appeared to be a place of shame and suffering into the place of ultimate victory and redemption.

Every believer must embrace the message of the cross personally. It is not merely a historical event but a present reality that brings salvation, freedom, healing, and hope. As we reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus, may we live in gratitude, walk in obedience, and boldly proclaim the power of the cross to a world in need of God's saving grace.

THE DANGER OF BETRAYING INNOCENCE

THE DANGER OF BETRAYING INNOCENCE

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 27:1-10

Key Verse: “Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.” (Matthew 27:3 KJV)

Supporting Texts: Matthew 26:14-16; Proverbs 6:16-19; Psalm 41:9; Zechariah 11:12-13; Acts 1:16-20; Romans 12:17

Description: Betraying the innocent brings devastating spiritual, emotional, and eternal consequences, while integrity and righteousness attract God's favour and blessing.

INTRODUCTION
Matthew 27 opens with the tragic aftermath of Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus Christ. Having sold his Master for thirty pieces of silver, Judas witnessed the condemnation of the innocent Son of God. Although he felt remorse and attempted to return the money, the consequences of his actions could not be undone. His story stands as a solemn warning about the dangers of betraying innocence and participating in injustice.

Throughout Scripture, God consistently defends the innocent and condemns those who oppress, accuse falsely, or take advantage of others. Innocent people may be betrayed by friends, family members, colleagues, leaders, or even religious authorities. Such acts often stem from greed, envy, hatred, selfish ambition, or fear. While human systems may sometimes fail to protect the innocent, God's justice remains certain and His eyes see every action.

The account of Judas reminds believers that every decision carries consequences. Betraying innocence not only harms others but also damages the soul of the betrayer. God calls His people to uphold truth, defend righteousness, and walk in integrity. As followers of Christ, we must learn to honour justice, protect the innocent, and avoid becoming instruments of harm in the lives of others.

1. BETRAYAL OF INNOCENCE OFTEN BEGINS WITH A CORRUPTED HEART
Wrong actions are usually the result of wrong motives.

a) Greed Can Corrupt Judgment (Matthew 26:14-15)
Judas allowed financial gain to become more important than loyalty and truth.

b) Sin Begins in the Heart (Mark 7:21-23)
Evil actions originate from sinful desires and unchecked motives.

c) Compromise Leads to Greater Failure (James 1:14-15)
Small compromises can eventually produce devastating consequences.

d) Guarding the Heart Is Essential (Proverbs 4:23)
A protected heart helps prevent destructive decisions.

Biblical Example: Achan's desire for forbidden treasures led to disobedience and brought trouble upon Israel (Joshua 7:20-25).

2. GOD TAKES THE CAUSE OF THE INNOCENT SERIOUSLY
The Lord is deeply concerned about justice and righteousness.

a) God Hates False Witness (Proverbs 6:16-19)
False accusations are an abomination before the Lord.

b) God Defends the Innocent (Psalm 82:3-4)
The Lord calls His people to uphold justice and protect the vulnerable.

c) Innocent Blood Cries Out for Justice (Genesis 4:10)
God sees every act of wrongdoing against the innocent.

d) Divine Justice Cannot Be Avoided (Ecclesiastes 12:14)
Every action will ultimately be brought before God's judgment.

Biblical Example: Naboth was falsely accused and unjustly executed, but God judged Ahab and Jezebel for their wickedness (1 Kings 21:1-24).

3. BETRAYAL BRINGS PAINFUL CONSEQUENCES
Sin may appear profitable temporarily, but its consequences are severe.

a) Judas Experienced Deep Regret (Matthew 27:3)
His remorse could not erase the consequences of his betrayal.

b) Sin Promises More Than It Delivers (Proverbs 14:12)
What appears beneficial may ultimately lead to destruction.

c) Guilt Torments the Conscience (Psalm 32:3-4)
A troubled conscience often follows acts of wrongdoing.

d) The Wages of Sin Remain Serious (Romans 6:23)
Sin always carries consequences, whether immediate or delayed.

Biblical Example: King David's sin against Uriah brought painful consequences into his household despite receiving forgiveness (2 Samuel 12:9-14).

4. THE INNOCENT MAY SUFFER, BUT GOD REMAINS THEIR DEFENDER
The suffering of innocent people never escapes God's attention.

a) Jesus Was Completely Innocent (Matthew 27:22-23)
No legitimate accusation could be established against Him.

b) God Sees Hidden Injustices (Psalm 33:13-15)
Nothing escapes the Lord's knowledge.

c) God Vindicates the Righteous (Psalm 37:5-6)
In His time, God brings truth to light.

d) Faithfulness During Suffering Is Rewarded (1 Peter 2:19-23)
God honours those who endure unjust treatment with patience and trust.

Biblical Example: Joseph suffered false accusations and imprisonment, yet God eventually elevated and vindicated him (Genesis 39:20-23; 41:39-44).

5. REPENTANCE MUST GO BEYOND REGRET
There is a difference between remorse and genuine repentance.

a) Judas Felt Remorse (Matthew 27:3-5)
He regretted his actions but did not turn fully to God.

b) True Repentance Leads to Transformation (Acts 3:19)
Genuine repentance results in a changed heart and life.

c) God Offers Mercy to the Contrite (Psalm 51:17)
The Lord receives those who sincerely return to Him.

d) Delayed Repentance Can Be Dangerous (Hebrews 3:15)
People should respond promptly to God's conviction.

Biblical Example: Peter denied Jesus but genuinely repented and was restored to ministry (John 21:15-17).

6. BELIEVERS MUST CHOOSE INTEGRITY AND RIGHTEOUSNESS
God calls His people to be defenders of truth rather than participants in injustice.

a) Speak the Truth Always (Ephesians 4:25)
Honesty must characterize every believer.

b) Defend Those Who Cannot Defend Themselves (Proverbs 31:8-9)
God expects His people to stand for justice.

c) Refuse to Participate in Evil (Ephesians 5:11)
Believers must reject every form of wrongdoing.

d) Walk in Integrity Before God (Psalm 15:1-2)
A life of integrity honours God and blesses others.

Biblical Example: Daniel maintained integrity despite pressure and false accusations, and God honoured him openly (Daniel 6:4-23).

CONCLUSION
The story of Judas and the condemnation of Jesus provide a powerful warning about the danger of betraying innocence. Judas allowed greed and compromise to control his decisions, resulting in devastating consequences. His life reminds us that no earthly gain is worth the price of violating truth, justice, and righteousness.

As believers, we are called to honour God by protecting the innocent, speaking the truth, and living with integrity. We must guard our hearts against greed, envy, and selfish ambition while cultivating a spirit of righteousness and compassion. When we choose God's way, we become instruments of His justice and grace in a world that desperately needs both.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, help me to walk in integrity and righteousness in Jesus name.

2. Lord, deliver me from greed and selfish ambition in Jesus name.

3. Father, keep my heart pure and free from evil motives in Jesus name.

THE TRIAL OF JESUS

THE TRIAL OF JESUS

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 27:1-26

Key Verse: “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” (Isaiah 53:7 KJV)

Supporting Texts: Matthew 26:57-68; Isaiah 53:3-7; John 18:28-40; Acts 8:32-35; 1 Peter 2:21-24; Romans 5:8

Description: The trial of Jesus reveals His innocence, humility, obedience, and willingness to suffer unjustly in order to accomplish God's plan of redemption.

INTRODUCTION
The trial of Jesus Christ stands as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in human history. After His arrest in Gethsemane, Jesus was brought before the Jewish religious leaders and later delivered to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. Though no legitimate charge could be proven against Him, the religious leaders were determined to secure His condemnation. False accusations, political pressure, and public manipulation combined to produce a verdict that ultimately led to His crucifixion.

Matthew 27 presents a remarkable contrast between the innocence of Jesus and the corruption of those seeking His death. Pilate repeatedly recognized that Jesus had committed no crime worthy of punishment, yet he yielded to the demands of the crowd. The religious leaders rejected the very Messiah they claimed to await, while the people chose Barabbas, a known criminal, instead of the righteous Son of God.

Despite the injustice, Jesus remained calm, submissive, and focused on the Father's will. He understood that His suffering was necessary for the salvation of humanity. His trial demonstrates not only the depths of human sin but also the greatness of God's love. Through His willingness to endure false accusations and condemnation, Jesus secured redemption for all who believe in Him.

1. JESUS WAS COMPLETELY INNOCENT
The trial revealed the sinlessness and righteousness of Christ.

a) No Genuine Charge Could Be Proven (Matthew 27:23)
Even His enemies could not establish a legitimate case against Him.

b) Pilate Recognized His Innocence (Matthew 27:24)
The Roman governor knew Jesus was being accused out of envy.

c) Christ Was Without Sin (Hebrews 4:15)
Jesus lived a perfect and blameless life before God and man.

d) The Sinless One Died for Sinners (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Though innocent, He took the place of guilty humanity.

Biblical Example: Joseph was falsely accused by Potiphar's wife despite his integrity and righteousness (Genesis 39:7-20).

2. ENVY AND HATRED CAN BLIND THE HUMAN HEART
The religious leaders rejected Jesus because of hardened hearts.

a) Envy Motivated His Accusers (Matthew 27:18)
Pilate perceived that jealousy was the driving force behind their actions.

b) Religious Activity Does Not Guarantee Spiritual Discernment (John 5:39-40)
The leaders knew the Scriptures but failed to recognize the Messiah.

c) Hardened Hearts Resist God's Truth (Hebrews 3:15)
Persistent unbelief can blind people to divine revelation.

d) Hatred Leads to Unjust Actions (Proverbs 10:12)
Unchecked hatred often results in sinful behaviour and injustice.

Biblical Example: Cain's jealousy of Abel led him to commit murder, demonstrating the destructive power of envy (Genesis 4:3-8).

3. JESUS RESPONDED TO INJUSTICE WITH HUMILITY
Christ demonstrated remarkable self-control during His trial.

a) He Remained Silent Before His Accusers (Matthew 27:12-14)
Jesus refused to defend Himself against false accusations.

b) He Fulfilled Prophecy (Isaiah 53:7)
His silence confirmed God's prophetic word concerning the suffering Messiah.

c) He Trusted the Father's Plan (John 18:11)
Jesus understood that His suffering was part of God's purpose.

d) Humility Is Stronger Than Revenge (Romans 12:19)
Christ chose submission rather than retaliation.

Biblical Example: David refused to retaliate against King Saul despite repeated attempts on his life, trusting God to vindicate him (1 Samuel 24:1-12).

4. THE CROWD CHOSE BARABBAS OVER JESUS
The choice between Barabbas and Jesus reveals the tragedy of sinful humanity.

a) Barabbas Represented Guilty Humanity (Matthew 27:16)
He was a criminal deserving punishment.

b) Jesus Took the Place of the Guilty (Matthew 27:26)
The innocent Christ suffered while the guilty man was released.

c) God's Grace Provides Substitution (Isaiah 53:5-6)
Jesus bore the punishment that sinners deserved.

d) Every Person Must Choose Christ (John 3:16-18)
Humanity is continually confronted with the decision to accept or reject Jesus.

Biblical Example: The Passover lamb died in place of Israel's firstborn, foreshadowing Christ's substitutionary sacrifice (Exodus 12:1-13).

5. GOD'S PURPOSE PREVAILED THROUGH HUMAN INJUSTICE
Though the trial was unjust, God's redemptive plan was being fulfilled.

a) God's Sovereignty Was at Work (Acts 2:23)
The crucifixion occurred according to God's predetermined plan.

b) Evil Could Not Defeat God's Purpose (Genesis 50:20)
What people intended for evil, God used for good.

c) Prophecy Was Being Fulfilled (Psalm 22:16-18)
The events surrounding Jesus' suffering had been foretold centuries earlier.

d) Redemption Was Being Accomplished (Romans 5:8)
Through Christ's suffering, salvation became available to all.

Biblical Example: Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery, but God used their actions to preserve many lives during famine (Genesis 45:5-8).

6. BELIEVERS MUST REMAIN FAITHFUL IN TIMES OF INJUSTICE
Jesus provides the perfect example for enduring unfair treatment.

a) Trust God When Misunderstood (1 Peter 2:23)
Jesus committed Himself to the One who judges righteously.

b) Maintain Integrity Under Pressure (Proverbs 11:3)
Believers must uphold godly character regardless of circumstances.

c) Leave Vengeance to God (Romans 12:19)
God alone is qualified to administer perfect justice.

d) Remain Focused on God's Purpose (James 1:12)
Faithfulness during trials leads to spiritual reward.

Biblical Example: Daniel remained faithful despite false accusations and was vindicated by God in the lions' den (Daniel 6:4-23).

CONCLUSION
The trial of Jesus reveals the depths of human sin and the greatness of divine love. Though innocent, Jesus was falsely accused, rejected, and condemned. He endured injustice without retaliation, trusting completely in the Father's will. Through His willingness to suffer, God's plan of redemption was fulfilled, and salvation became available to the world.

Believers can learn powerful lessons from Christ's example. When facing misunderstanding, opposition, or injustice, we are called to trust God, maintain integrity, and remain faithful. Just as God accomplished His purpose through the suffering of Christ, He is able to work through every challenge we face for His glory and our good. The trial of Jesus reminds us that God's purposes cannot be thwarted and that ultimate victory belongs to Him.

STANDING STRONG IN TIMES OF TRIAL

STANDING STRONG IN TIMES OF TRIAL

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 26:36-75

Key Verse: “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41 KJV)

Supporting Texts: James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 1:6-7; Psalm 46:1; Isaiah 41:10; Romans 8:28; 1 Corinthians 10:13

Description: Trials are inevitable in the Christian life, but through prayer, faith, and dependence upon God, believers can remain steadfast and emerge victorious.

INTRODUCTION
Matthew 26 presents a series of intense trials experienced by Jesus and His disciples. In Gethsemane, Jesus faced overwhelming sorrow as He prepared for the cross. Judas betrayed Him, the disciples fled in fear, and Peter denied Him three times. These events reveal that moments of testing are a reality for every believer. Trials often expose the true condition of the heart and reveal whether one's faith is rooted in God or merely in human strength.

The chapter also demonstrates that trials come in different forms. Some are spiritual battles, such as Jesus experienced in prayer. Others involve temptation, betrayal, disappointment, fear, or persecution. While the circumstances may vary, the challenge remains the same: will we trust God and remain faithful when our faith is tested? The experiences of Matthew 26 provide valuable lessons for standing firm during difficult seasons.

God never intended for believers to face trials alone. Throughout Scripture, He promises His presence, strength, wisdom, and grace for those who trust Him. Trials are not designed to destroy God's children but to refine their faith and prepare them for greater usefulness in His kingdom. By learning from the events of Matthew 26, believers can discover how to stand strong when life's storms arise.

1. STRENGTH IN TRIALS COMES THROUGH PRAYER
Jesus faced His greatest trial by seeking the Father in prayer.

a) Prayer Provides Spiritual Strength (Matthew 26:39)
Jesus repeatedly turned to prayer as He faced the agony of the cross.

b) Prayer Brings God's Help (Hebrews 4:16)
Those who seek God find mercy and grace in times of need.

c) Prayer Aligns Us with God's Will (Matthew 26:42)
Prayer helps believers submit to God's purpose even when it is difficult.

d) Prayer Prevents Spiritual Failure (Matthew 26:41)
Watchfulness and prayer help believers overcome temptation.

Biblical Example: Daniel remained faithful through prayer despite threats and persecution, and God delivered him from the lions' den (Daniel 6:10-23).

2. TRUSTING GOD IN DIFFICULT MOMENTS
Faith is essential when circumstances become overwhelming.

a) God's Presence Never Fails (Isaiah 41:10)
The Lord remains with His people in every trial.

b) God's Purpose Is Greater Than Present Pain (Romans 8:28)
God works all things together for the good of those who love Him.

c) Faith Overcomes Fear (Psalm 56:3)
Trusting God enables believers to face uncertainty with confidence.

d) God's Promises Remain Sure (Numbers 23:19)
The Lord is faithful to fulfil every word He has spoken.

Biblical Example: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego trusted God in the fiery furnace and experienced His miraculous presence (Daniel 3:16-28).

3. SPIRITUAL ALERTNESS IS NECESSARY DURING TESTING
The disciples failed because they underestimated the seriousness of the moment.

a) Temptation Often Comes Unexpectedly (Matthew 26:41)
Believers must remain prepared for spiritual challenges.

b) Complacency Leads to Weakness (Proverbs 24:10)
Neglecting spiritual disciplines makes believers vulnerable.

c) Discernment Protects Against Deception (1 Peter 5:8)
Spiritual alertness helps believers recognize the enemy's schemes.

d) Consistent Fellowship with God Builds Strength (John 15:5)
Abiding in Christ provides the strength needed for victory.

Biblical Example: Nehemiah remained vigilant against opposition while rebuilding Jerusalem's walls and successfully completed the work (Nehemiah 4:7-9).

4. HUMAN STRENGTH ALONE IS INSUFFICIENT
Peter's failure teaches the danger of self-confidence.

a) Good Intentions Are Not Enough (Matthew 26:33-35)
Peter sincerely desired to remain faithful but relied on his own strength.

b) Pride Often Precedes Failure (Proverbs 16:18)
Overconfidence can lead to spiritual defeat.

c) Dependence on God Is Essential (John 15:5)
True strength comes from abiding in Christ.

d) God's Grace Sustains Believers (2 Corinthians 12:9)
The Lord's power is perfected in weakness.

Biblical Example: Samson lost his strength when he became careless, demonstrating the danger of neglecting dependence on God (Judges 16:15-21).

5. TRIALS REFINE AND STRENGTHEN FAITH
God uses difficult experiences to develop spiritual maturity.

a) Trials Test Genuine Faith (1 Peter 1:6-7)
Difficulties reveal the authenticity of one's trust in God.

b) Perseverance Produces Maturity (James 1:2-4)
Endurance develops godly character.

c) God Uses Trials for Growth (Romans 5:3-5)
Challenges can strengthen hope and spiritual resilience.

d) Refined Faith Brings Glory to God (1 Peter 1:7)
A tested faith becomes a testimony of God's power.

Biblical Example: Job remained faithful despite severe trials and ultimately experienced God's restoration and blessing (Job 42:10-17).

6. RESTORATION IS AVAILABLE AFTER FAILURE
Peter's denial was not the end of his story.

a) Failure Does Not Have to Be Final (Luke 22:61-62)
Peter wept bitterly and repented after denying Christ.

b) God's Mercy Is Greater Than Our Mistakes (Lamentations 3:22-23)
The Lord offers forgiveness and restoration.

c) Repentance Opens the Door to Renewal (1 John 1:9)
Confession and repentance bring cleansing and healing.

d) God Can Still Use Broken People (John 21:15-17)
Peter was restored and became a powerful leader in the early church.

Biblical Example: Jonah disobeyed God but later repented and fulfilled his divine assignment in Nineveh (Jonah 3:1-10).

CONCLUSION
Matthew 26 teaches that trials are an unavoidable part of the Christian journey. Jesus faced agony in Gethsemane, betrayal from Judas, abandonment by His disciples, and unjust treatment from His enemies. Peter experienced failure because he relied on his own strength rather than remaining watchful and prayerful. These events reveal both the challenges believers face and the resources God provides for overcoming them.

Standing strong in times of trial requires prayer, faith, spiritual alertness, humility, and complete dependence upon God. While trials may test our faith, they also refine our character and draw us closer to the Lord. When believers trust God and remain steadfast, they discover that His grace is sufficient and His strength is more than enough to carry them through every challenge.

THE AGONY OF GETHSEMANE

THE AGONY OF GETHSEMANE

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 26:36-46

Key Verse: “He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.” (Matthew 26:42 KJV)

Supporting Texts: Luke 22:39-46; Hebrews 5:7-9; Isaiah 53:3-5; Philippians 2:8; John 18:11; Romans 5:19

Description: The agony of Gethsemane reveals Christ's complete submission to the Father's will and teaches believers how to overcome life's greatest battles through prayer and obedience.

INTRODUCTION
The Garden of Gethsemane was the place where one of the greatest spiritual battles in history took place. After sharing the Last Supper with His disciples, Jesus went to the garden to pray. Knowing that the cross was only hours away, He experienced deep sorrow and anguish as He contemplated the suffering, rejection, and separation He would endure on behalf of sinful humanity. Matthew records that Jesus said, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death,” revealing the intensity of the burden He carried.

Gethsemane was not merely a place of emotional struggle; it was a place of surrender. The name "Gethsemane" means "oil press," and just as olives are crushed to produce oil, Jesus was pressed under the weight of His mission. Yet in the midst of His agony, He chose obedience over personal comfort and submitted Himself completely to the Father's will. His victory in the garden prepared Him for the victory of the cross.

The lessons of Gethsemane remain relevant for believers today. Every Christian will face seasons of testing, difficult decisions, and moments when obedience to God requires sacrifice. Through Christ's example, we learn the importance of prayer, perseverance, submission, and trust in God during life's most challenging moments.

1. GETHSEMANE REVEALS THE REALITY OF SPIRITUAL BATTLES
Before every major victory, there is often a spiritual struggle.

a) Jesus Faced Intense Emotional Pressure (Matthew 26:37-38)
The Lord experienced deep sorrow and distress as He anticipated the cross.

b) Spiritual Battles Often Precede Physical Events (Ephesians 6:12)
Many visible challenges have spiritual dimensions that must be addressed.

c) Trials Are Part of God's Redemptive Process (James 1:2-4)
Difficult seasons often produce spiritual maturity and growth.

d) God Understands Human Weakness (Hebrews 4:15)
Jesus experienced human suffering and can sympathize with our struggles.

Biblical Example: Jacob wrestled through the night before experiencing a life-changing encounter and blessing from God (Genesis 32:24-30).

2. PRAYER IS THE KEY TO VICTORY IN TIMES OF TRIAL
Jesus responded to His agony through persistent prayer.

a) Prayer Brings Strength During Difficult Times (Luke 22:43)
God provides supernatural strength to those who seek Him.

b) Prayer Aligns Us with God's Purpose (Matthew 26:39)
Communion with God helps believers embrace His will.

c) Prayer Prevents Spiritual Defeat (Matthew 26:41)
Watchfulness and prayer help believers overcome temptation.

d) Persistent Prayer Produces Endurance (Romans 12:12)
Those who continue in prayer develop spiritual resilience.

Biblical Example: Daniel's commitment to prayer sustained him through opposition and danger (Daniel 6:10-23).

3. SUBMISSION TO GOD'S WILL BRINGS SPIRITUAL TRIUMPH
The central lesson of Gethsemane is surrender to God's will.

a) Jesus Chose the Father's Will (Matthew 26:39)
Though the path was painful, Christ embraced God's purpose.

b) Obedience Is Greater Than Personal Preference (Philippians 2:8)
True discipleship involves surrendering our desires to God.

c) God's Will Is Always Best (Romans 8:28)
Even difficult circumstances can serve God's greater purpose.

d) Submission Produces Victory (Hebrews 5:8-9)
Christ's obedience opened the way for humanity's salvation.

Biblical Example: Abraham submitted to God's command regarding Isaac, demonstrating complete trust in God's wisdom and faithfulness (Genesis 22:1-14).

4. HUMAN WEAKNESS REQUIRES DIVINE DEPENDENCE
The disciples' failure highlights the necessity of relying on God.

a) The Spirit Is Willing but the Flesh Is Weak (Matthew 26:41)
Human determination alone is insufficient for spiritual success.

b) Spiritual Vigilance Is Essential (1 Peter 5:8)
Believers must remain alert to spiritual dangers.

c) Self-Confidence Can Lead to Failure (Proverbs 16:18)
Overconfidence often precedes spiritual defeat.

d) God's Grace Sustains Us (2 Corinthians 12:9)
The Lord's strength is made perfect in human weakness.

Biblical Example: Peter confidently promised loyalty but later denied Jesus because he depended on his own strength rather than God's grace (Matthew 26:33-35, 69-75).

5. GETHSEMANE TEACHES PERSEVERANCE IN DIFFICULT SEASONS
Jesus did not abandon His mission despite the intensity of His suffering.

a) Difficult Assignments Require Endurance (Galatians 6:9)
Believers must remain steadfast even when the journey becomes difficult.

b) God's Purpose Is Worth Every Sacrifice (Romans 8:18)
Present suffering cannot compare with future glory.

c) Faithfulness Must Continue Under Pressure (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Commitment to God should not depend on favourable circumstances.

d) Perseverance Leads to Fulfilment (James 1:12)
Those who endure faithfully receive God's reward.

Biblical Example: Joseph endured betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment before fulfilling God's purpose for his life (Genesis 50:20).

6. VICTORY IN GETHSEMANE PREPARED THE WAY FOR VICTORY AT THE CROSS
The triumph of the cross began with surrender in the garden.

a) Spiritual Victory Precedes Public Victory (Matthew 26:45-46)
Jesus won the battle of submission before facing the cross.

b) Obedience Leads to Redemption (Romans 5:19)
Through Christ's obedience, many are made righteous.

c) God's Plan Cannot Be Stopped (Isaiah 46:10)
The purposes of God always prevail.

d) Christ's Victory Becomes Our Victory (Colossians 2:14-15)
Because Jesus overcame, believers can walk in freedom and triumph.

Biblical Example: Moses' obedience in confronting Pharaoh led to Israel's deliverance and demonstrated God's power and faithfulness (Exodus 14:13-31).

CONCLUSION
The agony of Gethsemane reveals both the humanity and the divinity of Jesus Christ. Faced with unimaginable suffering, He experienced deep sorrow and anguish, yet He chose complete obedience to the Father's will. Through prayer, surrender, and perseverance, He emerged victorious and moved forward to accomplish humanity's redemption on the cross.

Believers today can draw strength from Christ's example. When faced with trials, uncertainty, or difficult decisions, we must follow His pattern of prayer, trust, and submission. Victory is not found in avoiding hardship but in remaining faithful to God through it. As we learn to say, "Not my will, but Thine be done," we position ourselves to experience God's strength, purpose, and ultimate triumph.
