TITLE: WALKING IN DOMINION
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Genesis 1:26-28
Supporting Texts: Luke 10:19, Romans 8:37
INTRODUCTION
From the very beginning, God intended for humanity to walk in dominion. In Genesis, He created man in His image and likeness, granting us authority over all creation. Walking in dominion means exercising the power and authority given to us by God to influence our environment and circumstances. This sermon will explore what it means to walk in dominion and how we can fulfil God’s purpose for our lives.
1. UNDERSTANDING OUR DOMINION
a) The Divine Mandate
In Genesis 1:26, God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion." This divine mandate establishes our identity and purpose as rulers over the earth. It is essential to understand that our dominion is not just about authority but about stewardship and responsibility.
b) Created for Authority
We were created to reign and rule, not to be ruled over. This authority is rooted in our relationship with God, and it is through Him that we derive our power to exercise dominion.
Biblical Example: Adam's Role in the Garden
Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it (Genesis 2:15). His role exemplifies the stewardship that comes with dominion; he was to cultivate and protect what God had entrusted to him.
2. WALKING IN AUTHORITY
a) Realising Our Power
Luke 10:19 states, "Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy." As believers, we possess authority over the enemy and the challenges we face. This authority is not to be taken lightly; it is a divine empowerment to effect change.
b) Speaking with Authority
Our words carry weight. When we speak in faith, we exercise our dominion. We can declare and decree things in alignment with God's will, knowing that He backs our authority.
Biblical Example: Jesus Calming the Storm
In Mark 4:39, Jesus spoke to the wind and waves, demonstrating His authority over nature. Similarly, we have the same authority to speak to the storms in our lives and see them cease.
3. EXERCISING DOMINION IN EVERY AREA OF LIFE
a) Spiritual Dominion
We are called to conquer spiritual battles and overcome the works of the enemy. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces. By walking in dominion, we can take authority over spiritual oppression in our lives.
b) Emotional and Mental Dominion
Walking in dominion also includes having control over our thoughts and emotions. 2 Corinthians 10:5 urges us to take every thought captive to obey Christ. This mental dominion allows us to live in peace and assurance.
Biblical Example: David Conquering Goliath
David exemplified dominion when he faced Goliath. With confidence in God, he declared victory over the giant (1 Samuel 17:45-47). His faith and boldness allowed him to walk in the dominion God had bestowed upon him.
4. LIVING OUT OUR DOMINION
a) Walking by Faith
Walking in dominion requires faith. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. We must believe in the power and authority we have in Christ and act upon it.
b) Engaging in Prayer and Worship
Prayer is a vital aspect of exercising our dominion. Through prayer, we connect with God and align our will with His. Worship also empowers us, reminding us of God’s sovereignty and our identity in Him.
Biblical Example: The Early Church
The early church exemplified walking in dominion through prayer, miracles, and boldness in proclaiming the gospel (Acts 4:29-31). They understood their authority and operated in it, impacting their world.
CONCLUSION
Walking in dominion is our divine heritage as children of God. We are called to exercise authority over our lives, environments, and circumstances. Understanding our identity in Christ empowers us to live victoriously and influence the world around us. Let us embrace our calling and walk confidently in the dominion God has given us.
