GREATNESS

SERMON TITLE: GREATNESS
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Genesis 12:2
Supporting Texts: Deuteronomy 28:13, 1 Samuel 16:7, Mark 10:43-45

INTRODUCTION
Everyone desires greatness, but true greatness is not defined by the standards of the world. In God's kingdom, greatness is measured by humility, service, and living according to God's purpose. Greatness is not about power, position, or possessions; it is about fulfilling the purpose for which God created you. This sermon will explore the biblical principles of greatness and how believers can walk in true greatness by aligning their lives with God’s will.

1. GREATNESS BEGINS WITH A GODLY VISION

a) Greatness starts with a clear vision of God's purpose for your life.

b) God called Abraham and gave him a vision of greatness: "I will make you a great nation" (Genesis 12:2).

c) True greatness is rooted in God's promise and purpose, not in our personal ambitions.

d) The world may define greatness by wealth and power, but God's standard is based on faithfulness to His calling.

e) Biblical Example: God called David, not because of his outward appearance but because of the heart He saw in him (1 Samuel 16:7).

2. GREATNESS REQUIRES HUMILITY AND SERVICE

a) In the kingdom of God, greatness is defined by humility and service to others.

b) Jesus taught His disciples that whoever desires to be great must be a servant (Mark 10:43-45).

c) True greatness is not about being served but about serving others with a heart of love.

d) Humility is essential for greatness because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

e) Biblical Example: Jesus Himself, though He was God, humbled Himself to serve and to die on the cross for humanity (Philippians 2:5-8).

3. THE PROCESS OF GREATNESS REQUIRES SACRIFICE AND OBEDIENCE

a) The path to greatness is not always easy; it often requires sacrifice and obedience to God.

b) Abraham’s journey to greatness involved leaving his comfort zone and following God’s lead (Genesis 12:1-4).

c) Sacrifice and obedience are foundational to the journey of greatness because they require trust in God.

d) God often tests our faith through sacrifice before promoting us to greatness.

e) Biblical Example: Joseph went through betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment before rising to greatness in Egypt (Genesis 41:41-43).

4. TRUE GREATNESS IS ROOTED IN GOD’S BLESSING AND FAVOUR

a) You cannot achieve true greatness on your own; it is God’s blessing and favour that make you great.

b) Deuteronomy 28:13 says, "And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath."

c) God’s favour will elevate you to levels that human effort alone cannot achieve.

d) Greatness is about fulfilling God’s purpose for your life, and that requires His divine help.

e) Biblical Example: Daniel and his friends were found ten times better than all the wise men of Babylon because of God's favour (Daniel 1:20).

5. GREATNESS IS FOR GOD’S GLORY, NOT OUR OWN

a) The ultimate purpose of greatness is to bring glory to God, not to ourselves.

b) When God makes someone great, it is so that His name will be glorified through their life.

c) We must constantly remind ourselves that our achievements and successes are not for personal pride but for God's honour.

d) We are stewards of the greatness God gives us, and we are to use it for His kingdom.

e) Biblical Example: Solomon was given great wisdom, riches, and honour, but it was for the glory of God’s kingdom (1 Kings 3:12-13).

CONCLUSION
Greatness in the kingdom of God is different from the world's concept of greatness. It begins with a God-given vision, requires humility and service, demands sacrifice and obedience, and is rooted in God’s blessing and favour. As believers, we are called to greatness, not for our own glory, but for the glory of God. Let us pursue greatness by aligning our lives with God’s will and fulfilling His purpose.
