TITLE: THE OIL OF DIVINE VISITATION
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: 1 Samuel 16:13
Supporting Texts: Isaiah 61:1-3, Acts 10:38, Luke 4:18-19
INTRODUCTION:
The "oil" in Scripture symbolizes the anointing, power, and presence of God. When the oil of divine visitation is poured upon a person, it signifies that God is about to do something extraordinary in their life. Throughout the Bible, those anointed with oil often experienced a divine visitation that led to supernatural breakthroughs, deliverance, and elevation. In this sermon, we will explore the significance of the oil of divine visitation and how we can receive and activate it in our lives.
1. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE OIL
a) Symbol of the Holy Spirit
Oil represents the anointing of the Holy Spirit. When the Spirit comes upon a person, it empowers them for divine assignment (Luke 4:18).
b) Empowerment for service
The oil of divine visitation equips believers to operate in God's power and fulfil their calling (Acts 1:8).
c) Mark of God's favour
Those anointed with oil are marked for God's favour and divine visitation, just as David was anointed and received divine favour (1 Samuel 16:13).
d) Healing and restoration
Oil is used for healing and restoring broken lives. The Good Samaritan used oil to heal the wounded man (Luke 10:34).
Biblical Example: David was anointed with oil, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, marking the beginning of his divine visitation and rise to kingship (1 Samuel 16:13).
2. HOW TO RECEIVE THE OIL OF DIVINE VISITATION
a) Desire and hunger for God's presence
Divine visitation comes to those who seek and desire it with all their heart. God responds to a heart that longs for Him (Psalm 42:1).
b) Consecration and holiness
To carry the oil of divine visitation, one must live a life of consecration and holiness. The oil does not rest upon the unclean (Leviticus 8:10-12).
c) Persistent prayer
Prayer draws the oil of divine visitation. The more we pray, the more we attract the presence of God (James 5:16).
d) Obedience to God's Word
Obedience is key to receiving the anointing. God pours His oil upon those who are willing to follow His instructions (1 Samuel 15:22).
Biblical Example: Elisha received a double portion of Elijah's anointing because he persistently sought after it and remained obedient (2 Kings 2:9-10).
3. THE IMPACT OF THE OIL OF DIVINE VISITATION
a) Empowerment for divine exploits
When the oil of divine visitation comes upon a person, they are empowered to do extraordinary things for God (Daniel 11:32).
b) Breaking of yokes
The anointing breaks every yoke of bondage and sets the captives free (Isaiah 10:27).
c) Supernatural favour and promotion
The oil brings divine favour, leading to promotion, just as it did for David, who was elevated from a shepherd to king (Psalm 75:6-7).
d) Release of spiritual gifts
The oil of divine visitation unlocks spiritual gifts, enabling believers to minister powerfully in the name of Jesus (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).
Biblical Example: Saul received the oil of divine visitation through Samuel and was transformed into another man, enabling him to lead Israel (1 Samuel 10:1, 6).
4. HOW TO SUSTAIN THE OIL OF DIVINE VISITATION
a) Living a life of prayer and worship
To sustain the oil, one must remain in constant fellowship with God through prayer and worship (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
b) Walking in humility
Humility attracts the continuous flow of the oil. Pride, on the other hand, grieves the Spirit and causes the oil to dry up (James 4:6).
c) Walking in obedience
Continued obedience to God's Word ensures that the anointing remains fresh and effective (Deuteronomy 28:1-2).
d) Staying in the Word
The Word of God is the fuel that keeps the oil burning. Meditating on the Word daily keeps the anointing flowing (Joshua 1:8).
Biblical Example: Jesus sustained the oil of divine visitation throughout His ministry by remaining in constant communion with the Father through prayer (Luke 5:16).
5. THE OIL OF DIVINE VISITATION FOR THIS GENERATION
a) The Church needs a fresh outpouring
Just as the early church experienced a divine visitation on the day of Pentecost, the church today needs a fresh outpouring of the oil of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4).
b) Revival and awakening
The oil of divine visitation brings revival and spiritual awakening. When the oil is poured out, the church comes alive with power and boldness (Joel 2:28).
c) Empowerment for evangelism
The oil empowers believers to preach the gospel with boldness and signs following (Mark 16:20).
d) Restoration of spiritual authority
The oil restores the authority of the church to heal the sick, cast out demons, and establish God's kingdom on earth (Matthew 10:1).
Biblical Example: The early apostles received the oil of divine visitation at Pentecost and turned the world upside down through signs, wonders, and miracles (Acts 17:6).
CONCLUSION:
The oil of divine visitation is a powerful anointing that brings transformation, empowerment, and divine favour. As believers, we must position ourselves to receive and sustain this oil by seeking God, living in holiness, and walking in obedience. Just as David, Elisha, and the apostles experienced divine visitations, we too can receive the oil that will enable us to walk in God's purpose and power.
