By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Hebrews 13:15-16
Supporting Texts: Romans 12:1, John 15:13, Philippians 4:18
INTRODUCTION:
Sacrifice is at the core of God’s relationship with humanity. It signifies giving up something of value for a greater purpose. Throughout the Bible, sacrifices have been instruments of worship, a demonstration of love, and a pathway to receive divine favour. The power of sacrifice lies in its ability to show devotion, unlock blessings, and move the heart of God. When we offer sacrifices with pure hearts, it results in powerful outcomes, both spiritually and practically.
1. SACRIFICE AS A DEMONSTRATION OF LOVE
a) Sacrifice Shows Selflessness
Sacrifice reflects a heart willing to give without expecting anything in return, just as God gave His Son out of love for humanity (John 3:16).
b) Sacrifice Reflects Devotion
Our sacrifices are a testament to our love and commitment to God, as seen in Abraham's willingness to offer Isaac (Genesis 22:2).
c) It Strengthens Relationships
Sacrifice is a key to healthy relationships, as it shows genuine care for others. Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends" (John 15:13).
d) It Demonstrates Faithfulness
Offering what we value to God builds faith and trust in Him, knowing that He honours our sacrifices.
e) Biblical Example: Ruth’s Sacrifice of Loyalty
Ruth left her homeland to stay with Naomi, a sacrifice that eventually led her to become part of Jesus' lineage (Ruth 1:16-17).
2. SACRIFICE AS A PATHWAY TO BLESSINGS
a) Unlocking Divine Favour
Sacrifices offered in obedience often attract God’s favour, as seen in the lives of Noah and Solomon (Genesis 8:20-22; 1 Kings 3:4-14).
b) Sacrifice as a Seed for Harvest
Every sacrifice is a seed that, when sown, brings forth a harvest in due time (Galatians 6:7).
c) Sacrifice as an Expression of Faith
Offering in faith pleases God, as “without faith, it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11:6).
d) Attracting God’s Presence
Sacrifices attract God’s presence, making it a channel through which He dwells with His people (Psalm 22:3).
e) Biblical Example: Solomon’s Sacrificial Offering
Solomon’s abundant sacrifice at the temple dedication led to God granting him wisdom, wealth, and peace (1 Kings 3:4-15).
3. SACRIFICE AS AN ACT OF WORSHIP
a) The Heart of Worship
True worship includes sacrifice; it’s about offering ourselves and what we value most to God (Romans 12:1).
b) Worship through Giving
Giving sacrificially is an act of worship, as seen in the woman who anointed Jesus with costly perfume (Matthew 26:6-13).
c) Sacrifice Reflects Obedience
Obeying God through sacrifice honours Him more than mere ritual offerings (1 Samuel 15:22).
d) Sacrifice that is Pleasing to God
God is pleased with sacrifices that come from a humble and repentant heart (Psalm 51:17).
e) Biblical Example: Abel’s Sacrifice Accepted
Abel’s offering, given in faith and devotion, was accepted by God, marking it as a powerful act of worship (Genesis 4:4).
4. SACRIFICE AND SPIRITUAL BREAKTHROUGH
a) Sacrifice as a Weapon of Warfare
Sacrifice, such as fasting, can lead to victory over spiritual battles (Isaiah 58:6).
b) Sacrifice Breaks Strongholds
Giving sacrificially can break financial, emotional, and spiritual strongholds (2 Corinthians 9:10-11).
c) It Opens Doors to New Levels
Sacrifices often lead to new seasons and breakthroughs, as demonstrated by David’s offering, which stopped a plague (2 Samuel 24:24-25).
d) Sacrifice of Praise and Thanksgiving
Offering praise in difficult times is a powerful act that brings breakthroughs (Hebrews 13:15).
e) Biblical Example: Jephthah’s Vow
Jephthah’s sacrificial vow brought him victory over the Ammonites (Judges 11:30-32).
CONCLUSION:
The power of sacrifice is undeniable in our walk with God. Whether it’s an act of worship, love, or obedience, sacrifices demonstrate our dedication to Him and yield blessings, breakthroughs, and favour. Let us be inspired by the examples of faith-filled believers who trusted God enough to give their all. When we offer our sacrifices to God, let us do so willingly, in faith, and with sincere hearts, knowing that God rewards such devotion.
