By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Timothy 5:17
Supporting Texts: Hebrews 13:7, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, 1 Corinthians 9:14

INTRODUCTION:
Pastor Appreciation Day is a special occasion to honour and celebrate the efforts, dedication, and spiritual leadership of pastors. The Bible teaches us to show respect and appreciation for those who serve the church faithfully. Pastors play a significant role in the spiritual growth and well-being of the congregation, making it essential to show them gratitude. In this study, we will explore why it is important to appreciate our pastors and how we can do so in meaningful ways.

1. HONOURING THE LABOUR OF LOVE

a) Pastors Labour in the Word
Pastors are responsible for studying and preaching the Word of God faithfully (2 Timothy 4:2). Honouring them recognises their hard work and dedication to feeding the flock.

b) Pastors Provide Spiritual Guidance
Through counselling, prayers, and teaching, pastors guide the congregation in the way of righteousness (Proverbs 11:14).

c) Pastors Watch Over Souls
Hebrews 13:17 teaches that pastors watch over the souls of the flock, a great responsibility that requires support and encouragement.

d) Pastors Sacrifice for the Kingdom
Many pastors sacrifice their time, energy, and resources to ensure the church thrives. They often work behind the scenes, making personal sacrifices for the welfare of the congregation.

Biblical Example: Apostle Paul (2 Corinthians 11:28) – Paul endured many trials for the sake of the churches, showing the dedication pastors often have.

2. GIVING DOUBLE HONOUR TO LEADERS

a) The Bible Commands Honour
1 Timothy 5:17 instructs believers to give double honour to elders, especially those who labour in preaching and teaching.

b) Appreciation Encourages Leaders
Public appreciation and recognition uplift pastors, reminding them that their efforts are valued and making them feel encouraged in their work (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

c) Supporting Them Financially
The Bible teaches that those who preach the gospel should live by the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:14). Offering financial support is a way of honouring pastors and ensuring they can focus on their calling.

d) Expressing Gratitude
Simple acts of appreciation, such as writing thank-you notes or giving verbal affirmations, can have a profound effect on a pastor’s morale.

Biblical Example: The Philippians (Philippians 4:15-19) – The Philippians supported Paul’s ministry, and in return, Paul blessed them for their generosity.

3. PRAYING FOR OUR PASTORS

a) Intercession for Strength
Pastors face spiritual and physical challenges; praying for their strength is essential (Ephesians 6:19).

b) Pray for Wisdom and Guidance
Pastors need divine wisdom to lead the congregation effectively. James 1:5 encourages us to pray for wisdom, and this includes praying for our leaders.

c) Protection from Spiritual Attacks
As frontline warriors in the spiritual battle, pastors are often targets of attacks. Praying for their protection ensures they continue in their work (2 Thessalonians 3:1-2).

d) Pray for Their Families
Pastors' families also play a crucial role in their ministry. Praying for their spouses and children fosters strength and support for their work.

Biblical Example: Moses (Exodus 17:11-13) – When Moses’ hands grew weary, Aaron and Hur supported him in prayer, showing the power of interceding for leaders.

4. SUPPORTING THE VISION OF THE PASTOR

a) Work Together in Unity
Supporting the pastor’s vision brings unity and allows the church to move forward (Philippians 2:2).

b) Engage in Ministry
Volunteering to assist with church activities, projects, and ministries eases the burden on the pastor and shows appreciation for their leadership.

c) Be Obedient to Their Guidance
Hebrews 13:17 encourages believers to obey their leaders and submit to their authority, making it easier for pastors to lead with joy.

d) Foster a Culture of Honour
A culture where the congregation honours and respects the pastor will enhance the church’s unity and growth.

Biblical Example: Joshua (Joshua 1:16-18) – The Israelites promised to follow Joshua as their leader, committing to support him as he led them into the promised land.

5. CREATING A LEGACY OF GRATITUDE

a) Celebrate Milestones
Recognising birthdays, anniversaries, and special achievements in a pastor’s life creates a legacy of gratitude and appreciation.

b) Teach the Next Generation to Honour
Passing down the value of honouring pastors to future generations ensures that the church continues to celebrate and respect its leaders.

c) Establish Annual Celebrations
Pastor Appreciation Day is an opportunity for the church to collectively express gratitude and celebrate the work of its spiritual leaders.

d) Create Long-Lasting Relationships
When pastors feel appreciated, it fosters stronger relationships with the congregation, making the church a more harmonious environment.

Biblical Example: The church in Ephesus (Acts 20:37-38) – The Ephesian elders wept and embraced Paul before he left, showing the deep relationship between a pastor and his church.

CONCLUSION:
Pastor Appreciation Day is a time to reflect on the invaluable role that pastors play in the spiritual lives of the congregation. Through their dedication, prayers, teaching, and leadership, they guide believers toward maturity in Christ.
