Main Text: John 11:1-44
Supporting Texts: Romans 8:35-39, 1 Peter, John 3:16, Isaiah 43:2, 2 Corinthians 5:17
INTRODUCTION
In life, we often face moments of despair and situations that seem beyond redemption—times when it feels as though we are buried under the weight of trials, failures, or rejection. However, the story of Lazarus in John 11 illustrates a powerful transformation from being buried in a tomb to being beloved and brought back to life by Jesus. This sermon will explore how God can move us from a place of being buried under difficulties to being embraced as beloved children, experiencing His love and resurrection power.
1. THE STATE OF BEING BURIED: EXPERIENCING DESPAIR
a) The Death of Lazarus (John 11:1-4)
Lazarus was seriously ill, and despite the hope that Jesus might heal him, he died. His death and burial represent times when we are overwhelmed by our circumstances. It signifies moments when all hope seems lost, and we feel entombed by our challenges.
b) The Burial (John 11:17-19)
Lazarus was buried in a tomb, a symbol of complete and final entombment. This reflects how we may feel buried under the weight of problems, grief, or failure, with no visible way out. The tomb represents those situations where we feel hopeless and abandoned.
c) The Despair of Martha and Mary (John 11:21-32)
Martha and Mary, Lazarus’s sisters, were in deep grief and despair. Their experience illustrates how loss and hardship can bring us to a point where we question God's timing and presence in our lives.
2. THE DIVINE INTERVENTION: FROM BURIAL TO LIFE
a) Jesus’ Arrival and Promise (John 11:23-26)
When Jesus arrived, He declared that Lazarus would rise again. Jesus spoke words of hope and resurrection, promising that He is the resurrection and the life. This signifies that even when we are buried in our troubles, Jesus brings a message of hope and transformation.
b) The Call to Come Out (John 11:43-44)
Jesus commanded Lazarus to come out of the tomb. This command represents the power of God to call us out of our difficulties and into a new life. It shows how Jesus’ authority and power can bring us from a place of death and despair to life and restoration.
c) The Restoration of Lazarus (John 11:44)
Lazarus came out of the tomb, still wrapped in grave clothes. Jesus instructed those around Him to remove the grave clothes. This illustrates how God not only brings us back to life but also removes the remnants of our past troubles, restoring us fully.
3. OTHER BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF TRANSFORMATION FROM BURIAL TO BELONGING
a) Joseph’s Journey (Genesis 37, 39-45)
Joseph was thrown into a pit by his brothers and later imprisoned in Egypt. Despite these dire situations, God elevated him to a position of power and influence. Joseph’s story shows how God can turn a place of being buried under rejection and imprisonment into a place of prominence and blessing.
b) The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)
The prodigal son was lost and destitute, symbolizing being buried under the consequences of his choices. When he returned to his father, he was embraced and restored. This story illustrates how God receives us back with love and restores our place as beloved children.
c) Paul’s Imprisonment and Ministry (Acts 16:16-40)
Paul and Silas were imprisoned, seemingly buried in their circumstances. Yet, their prayers and worship led to an earthquake that opened the prison doors. Their imprisonment turned into an opportunity for ministry, showing how God can use our trials for His glory and bring us into a place of favor.
4. APPLYING THE LESSONS: MOVING FROM BURIAL TO BELONGING
a) Embrace Jesus’ Promise of Resurrection
Just as Jesus promised Lazarus’s resurrection, we must hold on to the promises of God for renewal and transformation. Believing in Jesus as the resurrection and the life means trusting that He can bring us out of our darkest times.
b) Respond to God’s Call
Jesus called Lazarus to come out of the tomb. We must be willing to respond to God’s call to leave behind our old selves and embrace the new life He offers.
c) Experience Full Restoration
After Lazarus came out of the tomb, Jesus instructed that his grave clothes be removed. Similarly, we should seek full restoration from God, allowing Him to remove the remnants of our past troubles and restore us completely.
d) Celebrate Our Belonging
Just as Lazarus was welcomed back to life and embraced, we should celebrate our identity as beloved children of God. Understanding that we are deeply loved by God changes our perspective and gives us confidence in His plans for us.
CONCLUSION
The story of Lazarus moving from being buried in a tomb to being brought back to life is a powerful testament to God’s ability to transform our situations. No matter how dire our circumstances may seem, God can bring us from a place of despair to a place of being cherished and renewed. By embracing Jesus’ promise, responding to His call, and experiencing His full restoration, we move from being buried under our troubles to being beloved and restored in Him. God’s love and power are capable of turning our darkest moments into testimonies of His grace and favor.
