By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
Supporting Texts: Hebrews 13:17, 1 Timothy 5:17, Philippians 2:29-30

INTRODUCTION:
Spiritual leaders are a gift from God to the church, and they play a vital role in guiding believers in their faith journey. Celebrating and honouring them is a biblical principle that acknowledges their labour and dedication. In this study, we will explore the importance of celebrating spiritual leaders and how it impacts both the leaders and the congregation.

1. RECOGNISE THEIR GOD-GIVEN ROLE

a) Appointed by God
Spiritual leaders are chosen and appointed by God for the edification of the church (Ephesians 4:11-12). Recognising their divine calling helps us to honour their leadership.

b) Watchmen Over Souls
Leaders are entrusted with the responsibility of watching over the souls of the congregation (Hebrews 13:17). Their role is critical to spiritual growth and protection.

c) Impartation of Wisdom
God uses spiritual leaders to impart wisdom and knowledge for life and godliness (Jeremiah 3:15).

d) Guiding in Faith
Leaders guide believers in building their faith and walking in God’s will (1 Timothy 4:16).

Biblical Example: Moses (Exodus 18:13-27) – Moses led the Israelites with wisdom and was celebrated for his leadership, even as he sought guidance from God.

2. SUPPORT THEM IN PRAYER

a) Intercede for Their Strength
Spiritual leaders face many challenges; therefore, praying for their strength and endurance is crucial (Ephesians 6:19).

b) Pray for Wisdom
Leaders need divine wisdom to make decisions that align with God’s will (James 1:5).

c) Pray for Protection
Spiritual warfare is intense for leaders. Praying for their protection ensures they can fulfil their ministry (2 Thessalonians 3:2).

d) Pray for Vision and Direction
Leaders need continuous guidance from God to lead effectively. Pray for clarity of vision (Proverbs 29:18).

Biblical Example: Paul (Acts 12:5) – The early church prayed for Peter's release, showing the power of interceding for spiritual leaders.

3. HONOUR THEIR LABOUR

a) Show Respect and Gratitude
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 urges believers to respect and acknowledge their leaders' hard work. Expressing gratitude encourages them in their ministry.

b) Provide Material Support
The Bible teaches that those who labour in preaching and teaching are worthy of financial support (1 Timothy 5:17).

c) Celebrate Their Achievements
Taking time to celebrate the milestones and achievements of spiritual leaders fosters a spirit of unity and appreciation.

d) Value Their Sacrifice
Spiritual leaders often make personal sacrifices for the church. Recognising their efforts strengthens the bond between them and the congregation.

Biblical Example: Elisha and Elijah (2 Kings 2:9-12) – Elisha honoured his spiritual leader Elijah and received a double portion of his anointing.

4. FOLLOW THEIR EXAMPLE OF FAITH

a) Imitate Their Faith
Hebrews 13:7 encourages believers to follow the example of their leaders’ faith and commitment to God.

b) Learn from Their Teachings
Spiritual leaders are appointed to teach and guide the church in righteousness (2 Timothy 4:2).

c) Support Their Vision
Supporting the vision of your spiritual leader brings about unity and progress in the church (Philippians 2:2).

d) Walk in Obedience
Obeying the instructions of spiritual leaders brings growth and blessings (Hebrews 13:17).

Biblical Example: Timothy (2 Timothy 1:5-6) – Timothy followed the faith of Paul, his spiritual father, and was empowered for ministry.

5. PROMOTE UNITY IN THE CHURCH

a) Guard Against Division
Celebrating spiritual leaders promotes unity in the church and guards against division (1 Corinthians 1:10).

b) Encourage One Another
When the congregation honours and celebrates their leader, it fosters a spirit of encouragement and unity among the members (Romans 12:10).

c) Work Together for the Kingdom
Unity in celebrating leaders ensures the work of the Kingdom advances without hindrance (Ephesians 4:3).

d) Celebrate Milestones as a Church
Church anniversaries, pastor appreciation days, and other special events provide opportunities to celebrate leaders and the congregation together.

Biblical Example: The early church (Acts 2:42-47) – The believers were united, celebrating God’s work through their leaders, and this led to growth.

CONCLUSION:
Spiritual leaders are a gift from God, and celebrating them is both a biblical command and a way to strengthen the church. As we recognise their role, support them in prayer, honour their labour, follow their example of faith, and promote unity, we create an environment where the church can flourish and grow. May we all commit to honouring and celebrating our spiritual leaders.
