By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Colossians 1:9-10
Supporting Texts: Philippians 3:10, John 15:4-5, Ephesians 1:17
INTRODUCTION:
Maintaining a deep knowledge of God requires continual effort and dedication. It is not a one-time achievement but an ongoing journey of growth and intimacy with the Lord. As believers, we must cultivate habits and disciplines that help us remain close to God and deepen our understanding of His nature, will, and ways. This study will explore the key steps to maintaining a deep and consistent relationship with God.
1. CONSISTENT STUDY OF GOD’S WORD
a) Daily Devotion to Scripture:
A deep knowledge of God is sustained by immersing ourselves in His Word daily (Joshua 1:8).
b) Seeking Revelation from Scripture:
Beyond reading, we should seek revelation and insight from the Word, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding (Psalm 119:18).
c) Meditation on God's Word:
Meditating on the Word allows it to take root in our hearts and transform our lives (Psalm 1:2-3).
d) Application of the Word:
It is important to not only study but also apply the principles of the Word in our daily lives (James 1:22).
Biblical Example:
The Berean Christians diligently searched the Scriptures daily to know God more (Acts 17:11).
2. ABIDING IN PRAYER AND FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD
a) Persistent Prayer Life:
Regular communication with God through prayer keeps our relationship with Him vibrant and growing (Luke 18:1).
b) Seeking God’s Presence:
To maintain a deep knowledge of God, we must spend quality time in His presence (Psalm 27:4).
c) Listening to God in Prayer:
Prayer is not just about speaking; it also involves listening to what God is saying to us (Jeremiah 33:3).
d) Praying for Deeper Revelation:
We must pray for the spirit of wisdom and revelation to know God more intimately (Ephesians 1:17).
Biblical Example:
Jesus maintained a deep connection with the Father through constant prayer (Mark 1:35).
3. WALKING IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S COMMANDS
a) Obedience as a Sign of Love:
Our love for God is demonstrated through our obedience to His Word (John 14:15).
b) Submission to God’s Will:
To maintain a deep relationship with God, we must submit to His will, even when it is difficult (James 4:7).
c) Trusting God's Commands:
Obedience comes from trusting that God's commands are for our good and His glory (Deuteronomy 6:24).
d) Growth through Obedience:
As we walk in obedience, our knowledge of God deepens, and our relationship with Him grows stronger (1 John 2:3-5).
Biblical Example:
Abraham’s obedience to God, even in difficult times, brought him into deeper fellowship with God (Genesis 22:16-18).
4. FELLOWSHIP WITH OTHER BELIEVERS
a) Encouragement in Fellowship:
Maintaining a deep knowledge of God is supported by fellowship with other believers who encourage us in the faith (Hebrews 10:24-25).
b) Learning from One Another:
Through fellowship, we grow in knowledge by learning from the experiences and insights of others (Proverbs 27:17).
c) Accountability in the Faith:
Fellowship helps keep us accountable in our walk with God, preventing us from falling into spiritual slumber (Galatians 6:1-2).
d) Strength in Unity:
As believers come together, the collective pursuit of God strengthens each individual’s relationship with Him (Acts 2:42).
Biblical Example:
The early church in Acts grew in their knowledge of God through constant fellowship and teaching (Acts 2:46-47).
5. DEPENDENCE ON THE HOLY SPIRIT
a) Guidance of the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth and reveals deeper aspects of God's nature (John 16:13).
b) Empowerment by the Spirit:
It is through the Holy Spirit that we are empowered to maintain our relationship with God (Acts 1:8).
c) Conviction by the Spirit:
The Holy Spirit convicts us when we stray, guiding us back into fellowship with God (John 16:8).
d) Walking in the Spirit:
To maintain a deep knowledge of God, we must consistently walk by the Spirit, not by the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
Biblical Example:
Paul’s relationship with God was deepened through his reliance on the Holy Spirit for revelation and power (Galatians 1:11-12).
CONCLUSION:
Maintaining a deep knowledge of God is a lifelong pursuit that requires dedication, consistency, and a willingness to grow. Through regular study of God’s Word, prayer, obedience, fellowship with other believers, and reliance on the Holy Spirit, we can continue to grow in our knowledge and experience of God. As we deepen our relationship with Him, we will bear much fruit and reflect His glory in our lives.
