Description: This study reveals the danger of division, disunity, and internal conflict, and emphasises the importance of unity, agreement, and spiritual harmony in families, churches, relationships, and nations.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 12, Jesus healed a man possessed with a demon, blind, and dumb. Instead of glorifying God, the Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub. Jesus responded by exposing the foolishness of their accusation, declaring that “every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation.”
Division weakens strength, destroys progress, and opens doors to destruction. Whether in families, churches, ministries, relationships, organisations, or nations, disunity produces instability and collapse. Satan understands the power of division and constantly seeks to sow confusion, offence, strife, and misunderstanding among people.
God, however, desires unity, peace, cooperation, and love among His people. Where unity exists, strength, blessing, and progress are released.
1. DIVISION BRINGS WEAKNESS AND DESTRUCTION
Disunity destroys strength, stability, and progress.
a) Jesus said a divided kingdom cannot stand (Matthew 12:25)
Internal conflict weakens any group or relationship.
b) Division creates desolation and collapse (Mark 3:24-25)
Constant strife destroys peace and productivity.
c) Satan uses division as a weapon against people (John 10:10)
The enemy seeks to divide families, churches, and communities.
d) Offence and unforgiveness fuel disunity (Hebrews 12:15)
Bitterness damages relationships and spiritual growth.
Biblical Example:
The kingdom of Israel became divided after Solomon’s reign, leading to national weakness and eventual destruction (1 Kings 12:16-19).
2. UNITY RELEASES STRENGTH AND BLESSING
God honours agreement and harmony among His people.
a) Unity attracts God’s blessing (Psalm 133:1-3)
God commands blessing where brethren dwell together in unity.
b) Agreement produces spiritual power (Matthew 18:19-20)
United prayer and purpose bring divine intervention.
c) Love preserves unity (Colossians 3:13-14)
Compassion and forgiveness strengthen relationships.
d) The early Church prospered in unity (Acts 2:44-47)
Spiritual growth and miracles increased through togetherness.
Biblical Example:
The builders of the Tower of Babel achieved much because of unity before God scattered them due to wrong motives (Genesis 11:1-6).
3. SATAN SEEKS TO DIVIDE GOD’S PEOPLE
The enemy works through confusion, pride, and strife.
a) The Pharisees opposed Jesus through jealousy and accusation (Matthew 12:24)
Envy and pride often create unnecessary conflict.
b) Strife opens doors to confusion and evil works (James 3:16)
Disorder grows where envy and selfish ambition exist.
c) Gossip and careless words create division (Proverbs 16:28)
Words can destroy trust and relationships.
d) Pride prevents reconciliation and peace (Proverbs 13:10)
Humility is necessary for unity and restoration.
Biblical Example:
Absalom created division in Israel through manipulation and rebellion against his father David (2 Samuel 15:1-6).
4. BELIEVERS MUST PURSUE UNITY AND PEACE
God calls His people to live in harmony and spiritual agreement.
a) Believers are called to maintain unity (Ephesians 4:3)
Unity requires effort, humility, and patience.
b) Christ prayed for unity among His followers (John 17:21)
Unity reflects God’s nature and brings glory to Him
c) Peace should rule relationships and fellowship (Romans 12:18)
Believers must pursue peace whenever possible.
d) Love overcomes division and conflict (1 Peter 4:8)
Genuine love covers offences and restores fellowship.
Biblical Example:
Paul encouraged the Corinthian church to reject divisions and remain united in Christ (1 Corinthians 1:10).
CONCLUSION
Jesus declared that a house divided against itself cannot stand. Division weakens families, churches, ministries, and nations, while unity releases strength, peace, progress, and divine blessing.
Believers must guard against pride, unforgiveness, gossip, jealousy, and strife. Through humility, love, forgiveness, and cooperation, God’s people can walk in unity and experience His favour and power.
