INTRODUCTION
Matthew chapter 10 concludes with Jesus speaking about rewards for faithfulness. He taught that those who receive His servants, support His work, and show kindness in His name will not lose their reward. Even something as simple as giving a cup of cold water in love and obedience to God is noticed and remembered by Him.
Faithfulness is one of the greatest qualities in the Christian life. God does not merely look at greatness, popularity, or outward success; He looks for consistency, obedience, sincerity, and perseverance. Many acts of service may go unnoticed by people, but nothing escapes the eyes of God.
The Lord is a righteous rewarder, and every labour, sacrifice, and act of obedience done for Him carries eternal value.
1. GOD VALUES FAITHFULNESS ABOVE GREATNESS
God rewards consistency and obedience.
a) Jesus recognised even small acts of kindness (Matthew 10:42)
No act of love done for God is insignificant.
b) Faithfulness is required of stewards (1 Corinthians 4:2)
God expects believers to be dependable and trustworthy.
c) God sees what people may overlook (Hebrews 6:10)
The Lord remembers every labour of love.
d) Small beginnings can lead to great rewards (Zechariah 4:10)
God honours humble and faithful service.
Biblical Example:
David faithfully served as a shepherd before God elevated him to become king over Israel (1 Samuel 17:34-37).
2. GOD REWARDS SERVICE DONE FOR HIS KINGDOM
Every Kingdom assignment carries eternal reward.
a) Receiving God’s servants brings blessing (Matthew 10:40-41)
Supporting Kingdom work connects believers to divine reward.
b) Labour in the Lord is never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58)
God ensures that faithful work produces eternal value.
c) Generosity toward God’s work is rewarded (Luke 6:38)
Giving opens the door for divine increase and favour.
d) God rewards according to faithfulness, not comparison (Matthew 25:21)
The Lord honours those who serve diligently with what they have.
Biblical Example:
The Shunammite woman cared for Elisha faithfully and later received a miraculous blessing from God (2 Kings 4:8-17).
3. FAITHFULNESS REQUIRES PERSEVERANCE
Believers must remain steadfast despite challenges.
a) Do not grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9)
A harvest comes to those who persevere faithfully.
b) Trials test and strengthen faithfulness (James 1:3-4)
Difficult seasons produce spiritual maturity.
c) Endurance leads to reward (Matthew 24:13)
Those who remain faithful until the end shall be saved.
d) God strengthens faithful believers (Isaiah 40:31)
Divine grace sustains those who trust in Him.
Biblical Example:
Joseph remained faithful to God through betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment before his promotion in Egypt (Genesis 41:39-44).
4. ETERNAL REWARDS AWAIT THE FAITHFUL
God’s greatest rewards extend beyond earthly life.
a) Jesus is coming with rewards (Revelation 22:12)
Eternal rewards await faithful believers.
b) Faithfulness leads to eternal honour (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
God crowns those who finish their race faithfully.
c) Heavenly treasures are everlasting (Matthew 6:19-20)
Spiritual investments carry eternal value.
d) The faithful shall reign with Christ (2 Timothy 2:12)
Enduring with Christ leads to eternal glory.
Biblical Example:
Paul completed his assignment faithfully and anticipated the crown of righteousness prepared for him (2 Timothy 4:6-8).
CONCLUSION
God is a faithful rewarder who sees every act of obedience, service, sacrifice, and kindness done in His name. Nothing done for God is wasted or forgotten.
Believers are called to remain faithful in prayer, service, giving, evangelism, leadership, and daily Christian living. Whether the task appears small or great, God honours faithfulness and promises both earthly and eternal rewards to those who endure faithfully.
