Description: This study teaches believers about the greatness of God’s grace, His sovereign mercy, and the danger of comparing ourselves with others in the kingdom of God.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 20, Jesus shared the parable of the labourers in the vineyard to reveal the mystery of God’s grace. Labourers were hired at different hours of the day, yet at the end of the workday, the master rewarded them equally. Those who worked longer became offended because they expected greater reward than those who worked only briefly.
The master responded by reminding them that he had treated no one unfairly and that he had the right to show generosity according to his own will. This parable teaches that God’s grace often operates beyond human reasoning, calculation, and expectation.
Human beings naturally compare effort, achievement, and reward, but God deals with people according to His mercy, wisdom, and sovereign purpose. Grace is not earned through human merit alone; it is God’s undeserved favour and kindness released upon imperfect people.
This study reminds believers to remain humble, grateful, and trusting in God’s grace rather than depending upon personal effort, pride, or comparison with others.
1. GOD’S GRACE IS A GIFT, NOT A HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT
Grace cannot be earned through human effort alone.
a) The labourers all received payment by the master’s generosity (Matthew 20:8-10)
Their reward reflected the goodness of the master rather than human merit alone.
b) Salvation comes through grace by faith (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Eternal life is God’s gift and not human achievement.
c) Human works cannot replace God’s mercy (Titus 3:5)
God saves and blesses according to His compassion and grace.
d) Grace gives what people do not deserve naturally (Romans 11:6)
Divine favour operates beyond human qualification.
Biblical Example:
The thief on the cross received salvation through grace despite having no opportunity for good works afterward (Luke 23:42-43).
2. GOD’S GRACE OPERATES ACCORDING TO HIS SOVEREIGN WILL
God distributes grace according to His wisdom and purpose.
a) The master had the right to bless as he desired (Matthew 20:15)
God remains sovereign over His blessings, opportunities, and rewards.
b) God shows mercy according to His divine purpose (Romans 9:15-16)
Grace flows from God’s will and compassion.
c) Human understanding cannot fully explain God’s ways (Isaiah 55:8-9)
God’s wisdom is higher than human reasoning.
d) God’s grace often surprises and humbles people (1 Corinthians 1:27-29)
He uses unlikely people and situations to reveal His glory.
Biblical Example:
David was chosen as king while others who appeared more qualified were rejected (1 Samuel 16:11-13).
3. COMPARISON AND ENVY CAN BLIND PEOPLE TO GRACE
Comparison destroys gratitude and spiritual joy.
a) The early labourers became offended at the master’s generosity (Matthew 20:11-12)
Comparison caused dissatisfaction despite receiving what was promised.
b) Envy opens the door to bitterness and strife (James 3:16)
Jealousy weakens spiritual maturity and peace.
c) Believers should rejoice in God’s goodness toward others (Romans 12:15)
Mature believers celebrate the blessings of others without resentment.
d) Gratitude helps believers appreciate God’s personal dealings with them (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Thankfulness protects the heart from pride and jealousy.
Biblical Example:
The elder brother in the parable of the prodigal son became bitter because of the father’s grace toward his younger brother (Luke 15:28-30).
4. GOD’S GRACE EMPOWERS, SUSTAINS, AND TRANSFORMS BELIEVERS
Grace is not only for salvation but also for daily living.
a) God’s grace strengthens believers in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Divine grace provides help during difficult seasons.
b) Grace empowers believers to live godly lives (Titus 2:11-12)
God’s grace teaches righteousness and holiness.
c) Grace provides confidence to approach God boldly (Hebrews 4:16)
Believers can receive mercy and help in times of need.
d) Grace transforms lives for God’s glory (1 Corinthians 15:10)
Paul’s ministry and transformation were products of divine grace.
Biblical Example:
Paul, once a persecutor of the church, became a powerful apostle through the transforming grace of God (1 Timothy 1:12-14).
CONCLUSION
The parable of the labourers in the vineyard reveals that God’s grace operates beyond human calculation and understanding. God blesses, rewards, and shows mercy according to His sovereign wisdom and goodness.
Believers must avoid comparison, envy, pride, and entitlement while remaining grateful for God’s grace in their own lives. Grace reminds humanity that salvation, favour, strength, and spiritual blessings come from God’s mercy rather than human achievement alone.
As believers depend upon God’s grace daily, they experience transformation, strength, humility, and deeper fellowship with Him.
