Description: This study examines the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, revealing Him as the promised King, the fulfilment of prophecy, and the Saviour who came to bring peace, salvation, and victory. It challenges believers to honour Christ as King and submit fully to His lordship.
INTRODUCTION
Matthew 21 records one of the most significant events in the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ: His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. As Jesus approached the city, He instructed His disciples to bring a donkey and its colt. Riding upon the colt, He entered Jerusalem while crowds spread their garments and palm branches on the road, shouting praises and proclaiming Him as the Son of David.
This event fulfilled ancient prophecy and publicly declared Jesus as Israel's promised Messiah and King. However, unlike earthly kings who often arrive with military power and political authority, Jesus entered Jerusalem in humility, riding on a donkey, symbolising peace, gentleness, and divine purpose.
The triumphal entry teaches believers about Christ’s kingship, the importance of worship, the fulfilment of God's promises, and the need to receive Jesus wholeheartedly as Lord and King of our lives.
1. JESUS IS THE PROMISED KING
The triumphal entry fulfilled God's prophetic plan concerning the Messiah.
a) Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah concerning the coming King (Matthew 21:4-5)
His entry demonstrated that He was the long-awaited Messiah promised throughout Scripture.
b) Christ came with divine authority and heavenly purpose (Matthew 21:1-3)
Every detail of His mission was under God's sovereign direction and control.
c) Jesus was publicly revealed as the Son of David (Matthew 21:9)
The people recognised His royal lineage and messianic identity.
d) God's promises are always fulfilled in His appointed time (2 Corinthians 1:20)
The triumphal entry reminds believers that God remains faithful to His Word.
Biblical Example
The prophecy given through the prophet Zechariah was fulfilled hundreds of years later exactly as God had spoken (Zechariah 9:9).
2. THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST IS BUILT ON HUMILITY
Jesus demonstrated a different kind of kingship.
a) Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey rather than a war horse (Matthew 21:5)
This symbolised peace, humility, and servant leadership rather than military conquest.
b) Christ's greatness was revealed through humility (Philippians 2:5-8)
He willingly humbled Himself to accomplish the Father's will.
c) God values humility above worldly pride and self-exaltation (James 4:6)
The character of Christ becomes the model for every believer.
d) Humble submission attracts divine favour and promotion (1 Peter 5:6)
God exalts those who walk in humility before Him.
Biblical Example
Moses remained one of the humblest men on earth, yet God used him mightily to lead an entire nation (Numbers 12:3).
3. JESUS DESERVES OUR WORSHIP AND PRAISE
The crowds responded to Christ with joyful celebration.
a) The people cried, "Hosanna" as an expression of praise and salvation (Matthew 21:9)
They acknowledged Jesus as the One sent by God.
b) Worship recognises God's greatness and authority (Psalm 95:6)
Genuine worship flows from grateful and surrendered hearts.
c) Jesus alone is worthy of honour and adoration (Revelation 5:12)
No earthly achievement or possession deserves greater devotion.
d) Believers should continually celebrate God's goodness and salvation (Psalm 150:6)
Praise remains a vital expression of faith and gratitude.
Biblical Example
David frequently worshipped God with joy, thanksgiving, and wholehearted devotion despite life's challenges (Psalm 34:1).
4. EVERY PERSON MUST DECIDE HOW TO RESPOND TO JESUS
The triumphal entry demanded a response from Jerusalem.
a) The city was moved by the arrival of Jesus (Matthew 21:10)
His presence demanded attention and decision.
b) Some welcomed Him while others remained doubtful (Matthew 21:11)
People responded differently to Christ based on their hearts.
c) Jesus still calls people to receive Him as Lord and Saviour (John 1:12)
Salvation requires personal faith and acceptance of Christ.
d) Recognising Christ as King should lead to obedience and discipleship (Luke 6:46)
True worship involves surrendering every area of life to His authority.
Biblical Example
Zacchaeus responded positively to Jesus, resulting in transformation, restoration, and salvation (Luke 19:1-10).
CONCLUSION
The triumphal entry of Jesus reveals Him as the promised Messiah, the humble King, and the Saviour of the world. His entrance into Jerusalem fulfilled prophecy, demonstrated God's faithfulness, and called people to recognise His authority and lordship.
Today, Jesus still desires to reign as King in the hearts of men and women. He deserves our worship, obedience, trust, and complete surrender. The question is not whether Christ is King, but whether we have truly welcomed Him to reign fully over our lives.
Those who receive Him wholeheartedly experience His peace, salvation, guidance, and eternal kingdom blessings.
