INTRODUCTION

In Matthew chapter 16, Jesus asked one of the most searching and important questions in all of Scripture: “What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Through this statement, Jesus revealed that the human soul possesses far greater value than wealth, fame, power, pleasure, or worldly success.

Many people spend their entire lives pursuing material possessions, status, influence, and temporary pleasures while neglecting the condition of their souls. Yet all earthly achievements are temporary, while the soul is eternal. At death, earthly riches, titles, and accomplishments remain behind, but the soul continues into eternity.

The value of a soul is seen in the price paid for redemption: the precious blood of Jesus Christ. God demonstrated His love for humanity by sending His Son to die for sinners so that souls could be saved and reconciled unto Him.

Believers must therefore understand the importance of salvation, eternal priorities, and helping others come to the knowledge of Christ.

1. THE HUMAN SOUL IS ETERNALLY VALUABLE

The soul is the most precious part of human existence.

a) The soul is eternal and will live forever (Ecclesiastes 12:7)
Physical life on earth is temporary, but every soul will spend eternity either with God or separated from Him.

b) Human beings are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27)
This gives humanity unique dignity, purpose, and spiritual value above all earthly possessions.

c) Material wealth cannot compare with the worth of a soul (Matthew 16:26)
No amount of riches, fame, or success can replace eternal salvation and fellowship with God.

d) Every soul matters deeply to God (Ezekiel 18:4)
God cares personally about the spiritual condition and eternal destiny of every individual.

Biblical Example:
The shepherd left ninety-nine sheep to seek the one lost sheep, illustrating God’s great concern for every soul (Luke 15:4-7).

2. WORLDLY GAIN CANNOT SATISFY OR SAVE THE SOUL

Earthly success without salvation leads to eternal loss.

a) Jesus warned against gaining the world while losing the soul (Matthew 16:26)
Worldly achievements become meaningless if a person remains spiritually lost.

b) Wealth and possessions are temporary and uncertain (1 Timothy 6:17)
Earthly riches cannot prevent death or provide eternal security.

c) The soul cannot be redeemed by human effort or money (Psalm 49:6-8)
Salvation is not purchased through wealth, status, or personal achievements.

d) Pursuing worldly pleasures without God leads to emptiness (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11)
Lasting fulfilment can only be found through relationship with God.

Biblical Example:
The rich young ruler valued earthly possessions more than fully following Christ and missed a deeper spiritual opportunity (Matthew 19:16-22).

3. JESUS PAID THE GREATEST PRICE FOR HUMAN SOULS

The sacrifice of Christ reveals the immense value of salvation.

a) God gave His only Son because of His love for humanity (John 3:16)
The cross demonstrates the depth of God’s desire to save lost souls.

b) Souls were redeemed through the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:18-19)
Salvation required the sacrificial death of Jesus because sin carried eternal consequences.

c) Jesus came specifically to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10)
Christ’s earthly ministry focused upon rescuing humanity from sin and eternal destruction.

d) Salvation is freely available to all who believe in Christ (Romans 10:9-10)
Eternal life is received through repentance, faith, and surrender to Jesus Christ.

Biblical Example:
Jesus forgave and transformed the life of Zacchaeus, showing His mission to rescue and restore lost souls (Luke 19:1-10).

4. BELIEVERS MUST PRIORITISE ETERNAL MATTERS

Christians are called to live with eternity in view.

a) Believers must seek first God’s kingdom (Matthew 6:33)
Eternal priorities should govern decisions, ambitions, and lifestyle choices.

b) Christians are called to help bring souls to Christ (Mark 16:15)
Soul-winning and evangelism are central responsibilities of every believer.

c) Wise believers invest in eternal treasures rather than temporary pleasures (Matthew 6:19-20)
Spiritual investments produce everlasting reward beyond earthly life.

d) The salvation of the soul should remain the greatest concern of life (Hebrews 9:27)
Every person will eventually stand before God, making spiritual readiness essential.

Biblical Example:
Paul dedicated his life to preaching the gospel and winning souls despite suffering, persecution, and sacrifice (1 Corinthians 9:16-23).

CONCLUSION

The soul is of greater value than all the wealth, fame, and success this world can offer. Jesus taught that no earthly gain can compensate for the loss of one’s soul.

God demonstrated the value of human souls through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ for salvation. Therefore, believers must prioritise eternal matters above temporary worldly pursuits and remain committed to living for God.

Life on earth is temporary, but the destiny of the soul is eternal. The wisest decision any person can make is to surrender fully to Jesus Christ and pursue eternal life.
