Description: This study reveals Jesus Christ as the rejected cornerstone, God’s chosen foundation for salvation and the Kingdom of God. It teaches the importance of receiving Christ, building our lives upon Him, and the danger of rejecting God’s provision.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew 21, Jesus tells the parable of the wicked tenants (husbandmen). A landowner planted a vineyard, leased it to farmers, and went away. When he sent servants to collect the fruit, the tenants beat, rejected, and killed them. Finally, he sent his son, expecting they would respect him, but they killed him as well.
Jesus used this parable to expose Israel’s rejection of God’s messengers and ultimately their rejection of the Son of God Himself. After telling the parable, He referred to Himself as the stone the builders rejected, which would become the cornerstone of God’s redemptive plan.
A cornerstone is the most important stone in a building, it determines alignment, stability, and strength. Without it, the structure collapses. Jesus declared that though rejected by men, He is the foundation upon which God’s eternal Kingdom is built.
This message teaches believers the importance of receiving Christ, building their lives upon Him, and recognising His authority as the only sure foundation for salvation and destiny.
1. JESUS CHRIST IS GOD’S CHOSEN CORNERSTONE
Christ is central to God’s eternal plan.
a) Jesus is the stone rejected by men but chosen by God (Matthew 21:42)
Human rejection cannot cancel divine selection and purpose.
b) God has made Christ the foundation of salvation (Isaiah 28:16)
Those who trust in Him shall never be put to shame.
c) Christ is the only true foundation of the Church (Ephesians 2:20)
The Church is built upon Jesus and His revealed truth.
d) There is salvation in no other name (Acts 4:11-12)
Jesus alone is the source of eternal life and redemption.
Biblical Example: Peter boldly declared that Jesus is the cornerstone rejected by builders but exalted by God for salvation (Acts 4:10-11).
2. REJECTION OF CHRIST LEADS TO SPIRITUAL LOSS
Rejecting Jesus has serious consequences.
a) The tenants rejected the son sent by the owner (Matthew 21:38)
This represents humanity’s rejection of God’s ultimate provision.
b) Rejecting Christ leads to separation from God (John 3:18)
Those who refuse Him remain under condemnation.
c) Spiritual rejection blinds people to truth and salvation (2 Corinthians 4:4)
Unbelief darkens understanding and hardens the heart.
d) Refusing God’s foundation leads to destruction (Matthew 7:26-27)
A life not built on Christ cannot withstand trials.
Biblical Example: The people of Nazareth rejected Jesus and missed the full expression of His power in their midst (Matthew 13:57-58).
3. JESUS IS THE FOUNDATION FOR A STABLE LIFE
Only Christ provides true spiritual stability.
a) A cornerstone determines the strength of the entire structure (Psalm 118:22)
Christ stabilises every aspect of a believer’s life.
b) Building on Christ ensures spiritual endurance (Matthew 7:24-25)
Lives founded on Jesus withstand storms and challenges.
c) Christ provides direction, alignment, and purpose (Colossians 1:17)
Without Him, life becomes unstable and confused.
d) Believers are living stones built upon Christ (1 Peter 2:5)
Every believer finds identity and purpose in Him.
Biblical Example: The wise man who built his house on the rock endured storms because his foundation was secure (Matthew 7:24-25).
4. GOD EXALTS CHRIST DESPITE HUMAN REJECTION
Man may reject Jesus, but God has exalted Him.
a) The rejected stone became the chief cornerstone (Matthew 21:42)
God reversed human rejection into divine exaltation.
b) God has highly exalted Christ above all (Philippians 2:9-11)
Every knee shall bow to His authority.
c) Christ is the head of the Church (Colossians 1:18)
He holds supreme authority in all things.
d) God’s purpose for Christ cannot be stopped (Isaiah 46:10)
His plan stands forever and cannot be reversed.
Biblical Example: Joseph was rejected by his brothers but later became a ruler in Egypt, preserving many lives (Genesis 50:20).
CONCLUSION
The rejected cornerstone is Jesus Christ, God’s chosen foundation for salvation, redemption, and eternal life. Though rejected by many, He remains the central and unshakable foundation upon which God builds His Kingdom.
Every believer must choose whether to accept or reject Christ. Those who build their lives on Him experience stability, salvation, direction, and eternal security. But those who reject Him risk spiritual collapse and eternal separation from God.
Jesus is still the cornerstone today, inviting all to build their lives upon Him.
