Description: This study reveals the glory, divinity, and authority of Jesus Christ through the Mount of Transfiguration and teaches believers about spiritual transformation, divine revelation, and the importance of listening to Christ.
INTRODUCTION
Matthew chapter 17 records one of the most glorious moments in the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus took Peter, James, and John up into a high mountain apart, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, His garments became dazzling white, and Moses and Elijah appeared speaking with Him.
This supernatural event revealed the divine glory and heavenly nature of Jesus Christ. The disciples were given a glimpse of Christ’s majesty beyond His human appearance. The presence of Moses and Elijah represented the Law and the Prophets, both pointing toward Jesus as the fulfilment of God’s redemptive plan.
During this encounter, a voice from heaven declared: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” God the Father confirmed Jesus’ divine identity and authority before the disciples.
The Mount of Transfiguration teaches believers important lessons about spiritual transformation, the glory of Christ, the power of divine revelation, and the necessity of listening to Jesus above every other voice.
1. THE TRANSFIGURATION REVEALED THE GLORY OF CHRIST
Jesus is more than a prophet or teacher; He is the glorious Son of God.
a) Jesus was transfigured before the disciples (Matthew 17:2)
His outward appearance changed supernaturally, revealing the hidden glory of His divine nature.
b) Christ possesses heavenly glory and divine majesty (Hebrews 1:3)
Jesus is the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of His person.
c) The glory of Christ strengthens faith and spiritual understanding (John 1:14)
The disciples witnessed His glory and received deeper revelation concerning His identity.
d) Jesus alone deserves worship, honour, and complete obedience (Revelation 5:12)
The revelation of His glory calls believers into deeper reverence and devotion.
Biblical Example:
When Moses encountered God’s presence on Mount Sinai, his face shone with reflected glory after speaking with the Lord (Exodus 34:29-35).
2. THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS POINTED TO CHRIST
Jesus is the fulfilment of God’s redemptive plan.
a) Moses and Elijah appeared speaking with Jesus (Matthew 17:3)
Their presence symbolised the Law and the Prophets bearing witness to Christ.
b) Jesus fulfilled the Law perfectly (Matthew 5:17)
Christ accomplished what the Law could not fully achieve through human effort.
c) The prophets foretold the coming of the Messiah (Luke 24:27)
Throughout Scripture, God revealed His plan of salvation through Jesus Christ.
d) Christ is the centre and fulfilment of Scripture (John 5:39)
The Bible ultimately points toward the person, mission, and kingdom of Jesus.
Biblical Example:
Isaiah prophesied concerning the suffering and glory of the coming Messiah centuries before Christ’s earthly ministry (Isaiah 53:1-12).
3. BELIEVERS ARE CALLED TO SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION
God desires to transform His people into Christlike character.
a) The transfiguration demonstrates God’s transforming power (Matthew 17:2)
Christ’s glory revealed the possibility of spiritual transformation through God’s power.
b) Believers are transformed through fellowship with Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Continual relationship with Jesus changes believers progressively into His image.
c) Spiritual transformation requires renewal of the mind (Romans 12:2)
Christians must reject worldly patterns and embrace God’s truth daily.
d) The Holy Spirit produces Christlike character within believers (Galatians 5:22-23)
Transformation involves inward change reflected outwardly in conduct and lifestyle.
Biblical Example:
Saul the persecutor was transformed completely into Paul the apostle after encountering Christ personally (Acts 9:1-22).
4. GOD COMMANDS BELIEVERS TO LISTEN TO JESUS
Christ possesses supreme authority over every other voice.
a) The Father declared, “Hear ye him” (Matthew 17:5)
God commanded the disciples to listen to Jesus as the final authority and revelation of truth.
b) Many voices compete for attention in the world today (Colossians 2:8)
False teachings, worldly philosophies, and sinful influences can distract believers from Christ.
c) Obedience to Christ leads to spiritual stability and blessing (John 14:23)
Those who hear and obey God’s Word experience deeper fellowship and guidance.
d) Jesus alone has the words of eternal life (John 6:68)
True wisdom, salvation, and direction are found through listening to Christ.
Biblical Example:
Mary instructed the servants at Cana, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it,” leading to the manifestation of Jesus’ miracle power (John 2:5).
CONCLUSION
The Mount of Transfiguration revealed the divine glory, authority, and majesty of Jesus Christ. Through this supernatural event, the disciples received deeper understanding concerning the identity and mission of Christ.
The transfiguration also teaches believers about spiritual transformation, the fulfilment of God’s Word in Christ, and the importance of listening to Jesus above every competing voice.
As believers walk closely with Christ through prayer, obedience, and fellowship with the Holy Spirit, God continues transforming them into the image of His Son.
