Description: This study reveals the spiritual power, influence, and consequences of words, and teaches believers how to use speech wisely, righteously, and edifyingly.
INTRODUCTION
Words are powerful. Through words, people encourage, heal, build, comfort, teach, inspire, and bless. Likewise, through words, people can wound, destroy, deceive, discourage, divide, and condemn. In Matthew chapter 12, Jesus taught that words reveal the true condition of the heart and that every person will give account for every idle word spoken.
The tongue may be small, but it carries tremendous spiritual influence. Words can affect relationships, destinies, emotions, reputations, and spiritual atmosphere. God Himself created the world through spoken words, showing the creative and influential nature of speech.
Believers are called to use their words wisely, truthfully, graciously, and spiritually because speech reflects the condition of the heart and carries lasting consequences.
1. WORDS REVEAL THE CONDITION OF THE HEART
Speech exposes what is hidden within.
a) Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34)
Words reflect inner thoughts, attitudes, and spiritual condition.
b) A good heart produces good words (Matthew 12:35)
Righteous speech flows from a transformed heart.
c) Corrupt hearts produce harmful speech (James 3:8-10)
Bitterness, anger, and pride often manifest through words.
d) God examines both the heart and speech (Psalm 19:14)
Believers must seek purity in thought and conversation.
Biblical Example:
Peter’s words of faith revealed spiritual revelation when he declared Jesus as the Christ (Matthew 16:16-17).
2. WORDS CARRY THE POWER OF LIFE AND DEATH
Speech can bless or destroy.
a) Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21)
Words influence emotions, relationships, and spiritual atmosphere.
b) Careless words bring damage and pain (Proverbs 12:18)
Reckless speech wounds deeply like a sharp sword.
c) Encouraging words strengthen others (Proverbs 16:24)
Gracious speech brings healing and comfort.
d) Faith-filled words release confidence and hope (Mark 11:23)
Spoken faith aligns with trust in God’s promises.
Biblical Example:
The negative report of the ten spies discouraged Israel and delayed their entrance into the Promised Land (Numbers 13:31-33).
3. BELIEVERS WILL GIVE ACCOUNT FOR THEIR WORDS
God takes human speech seriously.
a) Jesus warned about idle words (Matthew 12:36)
Every careless word carries accountability before God.
b) Words can justify or condemn (Matthew 12:37)
Speech reflects character and spiritual condition.
c) Believers must avoid corrupt communication (Ephesians 4:29)
Words should edify and minister grace to others.
d) Wisdom guards the tongue (Proverbs 21:23)
Self-control in speech prevents trouble and sin.
Biblical Example:
Miriam and Aaron spoke wrongly against Moses and faced God’s judgment for their words (Numbers 12:1-10).
4. GOD DESIRES BELIEVERS TO SPEAK WITH WISDOM AND GRACE
Speech should glorify God and bless others.
a) Words should be seasoned with grace (Colossians 4:6)
Believers must speak kindly, wisely, and respectfully.
b) Truth should be spoken in love (Ephesians 4:15)
Godly speech balances honesty with compassion.
c) The Holy Spirit helps believers control the tongue (Galatians 5:22-23)
Self-control is evidence of spiritual maturity.
d) Praise and thanksgiving should fill the believer’s mouth (Psalm 34:1)
Worshipful speech strengthens faith and glorifies God.
Biblical Example:
Barnabas used encouraging words to strengthen and restore believers in the early Church (Acts 11:22-24).
CONCLUSION
Jesus taught that words carry great power and reveal the true condition of the heart. Speech can either build or destroy, encourage or discourage, bless or harm. Believers are called to use words wisely, graciously, truthfully, and faithfully.
A surrendered heart produces righteous speech. Through the help of the Holy Spirit, Christians can speak words that honour God, strengthen others, and release life, peace, and encouragement.
