AUTHORITY FROM HEAVEN

Key Verse: “And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing… The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men?” (Matthew 21:24–25)

Supporting Texts: John 5:19-27; Luke 10:19; Acts 1:7-8; Romans 13:1; Daniel 4:34-35

Description: This study reveals the source, nature, and operation of divine authority. It teaches that true spiritual authority comes from heaven, is recognised through submission to God, and is demonstrated through obedience, righteousness, and alignment with His will.

INTRODUCTION

In Matthew 21, after Jesus cleansed the temple and taught in it, the chief priests and elders confronted Him, questioning by what authority He was doing these things. They were not genuinely seeking truth but attempting to challenge and discredit Him.

Jesus responded with divine wisdom by asking them a question about John the Baptist: whether his ministry was from heaven or from men. Their inability to answer exposed their spiritual blindness and fear of public opinion. Because they could not discern heaven’s authority, they also could not recognise the authority of Christ.

This passage reveals an important truth: all true authority in spiritual matters must originate from heaven. Human approval, position, or recognition does not determine spiritual authority. Instead, authority is given by God and is confirmed through alignment with His Word and Spirit.

Believers must understand the source of authority, submit to God’s order, and walk in obedience to His will to function effectively in the kingdom of God.

1. TRUE AUTHORITY ORIGINATES FROM HEAVEN

All legitimate authority comes from God.

a) Jesus challenged them to discern the source of authority (Matthew 21:24-25)
Spiritual authority must be tested by its origin: heaven or man.

b) God is the ultimate source of all authority (Romans 13:1)
No authority exists except that which God permits.

c) Christ received all authority from the Father (John 5:27)
Jesus operates under divine commissioning and approval.

d) Heaven governs earthly and spiritual systems (Daniel 4:34-35)
God rules over kingdoms and human affairs.

Biblical Example: Daniel operated under heaven’s authority, enabling him to interpret dreams and influence kings (Daniel 2:27-28).

2. SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY IS RECOGNISED THROUGH OBEDIENCE

Obedience validates divine authority.

a) Jesus operated in complete obedience to the Father (John 5:19)
His authority flowed from submission.

b) Authority increases through obedience to God’s Word (Luke 10:19)
Power in the kingdom is linked to alignment with divine instruction.

c) Disobedience weakens spiritual authority (1 Samuel 15:22-23)
Rebellion disconnects a person from divine backing.

d) True authority is proven through consistent godly fruit (Matthew 7:20)
Results reveal the authenticity of spiritual authority.

Biblical Example: Elijah’s authority was confirmed when fire fell from heaven after he obeyed God’s instructions (1 Kings 18:36-38).

3. HUMAN APPROVAL CANNOT SUBSTITUTE HEAVENLY AUTHORITY

People may question what God has established.

a) The religious leaders were more concerned about public opinion (Matthew 21:26)
Fear of man hindered their ability to discern truth.

b) Man’s approval does not validate spiritual authority (Galatians 1:10)
God’s approval is superior to human recognition.

c) Spiritual blindness prevents people from recognising God’s work (2 Corinthians 4:4)
Without revelation, divine authority is misunderstood.

d) God often reveals His authority through unexpected vessels (1 Corinthians 1:27)
He chooses the humble to confound the wise.

Biblical Example: The Pharisees rejected John the Baptist because they were unwilling to accept divine correction (Matthew 21:32).

4. THOSE UNDER HEAVENLY AUTHORITY WALK IN POWER AND PURPOSE

Divine authority produces impact.

a) Jesus operated with authority in teaching, healing, and deliverance (Matthew 7:28-29)
His words carried power because they were from heaven.

b) Believers are given authority through Christ (Luke 10:19)
They are empowered to overcome spiritual opposition.

c) The Holy Spirit confirms divine authority with power (Acts 1:8)
Spiritual effectiveness is enabled by God’s Spirit.

d) Authority must be exercised under submission to God (James 4:7)
Submission to God releases victory over the enemy.

Biblical Example: The apostles performed miracles and signs because they operated under heaven’s authority through Christ (Acts 3:6-8).

CONCLUSION

Authority from heaven is the foundation of true spiritual effectiveness. In Matthew 21, Jesus revealed that divine authority cannot be understood through human reasoning, political power, or religious status, but only through alignment with God’s will.

Those who recognise and submit to heavenly authority walk in power, wisdom, and spiritual influence. However, those who rely on human approval or resist divine truth remain spiritually blind.

Believers are called to live under God’s authority, obey His Word, and function in the power He has given through Christ.
