Description: This study reveals the authority of Jesus Christ to forgive sins and the freedom, healing, and restoration that come through forgiveness.
INTRODUCTION
Matthew chapter 9 records the story of a paralysed man who was brought to Jesus for healing. Before addressing his physical condition, Jesus first spoke words of forgiveness: “Thy sins be forgiven thee.” This shocked the religious leaders because they understood that only God has authority to forgive sins.
Jesus demonstrated that humanity’s greatest need is not merely physical healing but spiritual restoration through forgiveness. Sin separates people from God, produces guilt and condemnation, and brings spiritual death. However, through Christ, forgiveness is available to all who repent and believe.
The forgiveness of sins brings peace with God, freedom from guilt, restoration of relationship with God, and the assurance of eternal life.
1. JESUS HAS AUTHORITY TO FORGIVE SINS
Forgiveness comes through Christ alone.
a) Jesus declared the man’s sins forgiven (Matthew 9:2)
Christ revealed His divine authority over sin and spiritual bondage.
b) The religious leaders questioned His authority (Matthew 9:3)
They failed to recognise Jesus as the Son of God.
c) Only God can truly forgive sins (Mark 2:7)
Forgiveness originates from God’s mercy and grace.
d) Jesus came to save sinners (Luke 19:10)
Christ’s mission was to reconcile humanity back to God.
Biblical Example:
David received mercy and forgiveness after genuine repentance over his sin before God (Psalm 51:1-12).
2. SIN BRINGS SPIRITUAL BONDAGE AND SEPARATION
Sin affects every area of human life.
a) Sin separates humanity from God (Isaiah 59:2)
Disobedience breaks fellowship with God and hinders spiritual growth.
b) Sin produces guilt and condemnation (Romans 3:23)
Every person falls short of God’s perfect standard.
c) Sin leads to spiritual death (Romans 6:23)
The ultimate consequence of sin is eternal separation from God.
d) Hidden sin weakens spiritual life (Psalm 32:3-4)
Unconfessed sin affects peace, joy, and fellowship with God.
Biblical Example:
Adam and Eve lost their fellowship and peace with God after sin entered the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:6-10).
3. FORGIVENESS BRINGS FREEDOM AND RESTORATION
God’s mercy restores broken lives completely.
a) Jesus brought both forgiveness and healing (Matthew 9:6-7)
Christ restores spiritually and physically.
b) God removes sin completely (Psalm 103:10-12)
Through forgiveness, sins are cast away and remembered no more.
c) Confession brings cleansing and restoration (1 John 1:9)
God faithfully forgives those who genuinely repent.
d) Forgiveness produces peace with God (Romans 5:1)
Believers are reconciled to God through Christ.
Biblical Example:
The prodigal son was forgiven and restored fully by his father after repentance and return (Luke 15:17-24).
4. CHRIST CALLS PEOPLE INTO A NEW LIFE
Forgiveness leads to transformation and discipleship.
a) Jesus calls sinners into relationship with Him (Matthew 9:9)
Christ called Matthew from his old life into discipleship.
b) Salvation produces transformation (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Those in Christ become new creations.
c) Grace empowers holy living (Titus 2:11-12)
Forgiveness is not permission for sin but empowerment for righteousness.
d) Believers are called to forgive others also (Ephesians 4:32)
Those who receive mercy must extend mercy to others.
Biblical Example:
Zacchaeus experienced transformation after encountering Jesus and demonstrated genuine repentance through changed behaviour (Luke 19:1-10).
CONCLUSION
Jesus demonstrated in Matthew chapter 9 that He possesses authority to forgive sins completely. Humanity’s greatest need is reconciliation with God, and through Christ, forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration are freely available.
No sin is too great for God’s mercy. Those who come to Christ with genuine repentance receive forgiveness, peace, freedom, and a new beginning. Through Jesus, believers are restored into fellowship with God and empowered to live transformed lives.
