Description: This study reveals the importance of truly knowing Jesus Christ by divine revelation and understanding His identity as the Son of God, Saviour, Lord, and Messiah.

INTRODUCTION

Matthew chapter 16 records one of the most important moments in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Jesus asked His disciples a very personal and revealing question: “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” After hearing various opinions from the people, Jesus then asked the disciples directly: “But whom say ye that I am?”

Simon Peter responded with divine insight, declaring: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus immediately explained that this revelation did not come through human wisdom or natural understanding, but through divine revelation from the Father.

Many people know about Jesus historically, religiously, or intellectually, yet few truly know Him personally through spiritual revelation. A genuine revelation of Christ transforms lives, strengthens faith, deepens worship, and establishes believers firmly in truth.

Christianity is not merely about religion, tradition, or church attendance; it is about truly knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

1. MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS ABOUT JESUS

Human understanding alone cannot fully reveal Christ.

a) People in Jesus’ day held different opinions concerning His identity (Matthew 16:13-14)
Some believed He was John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets because they viewed Him only from a human perspective.

b) Natural knowledge alone is insufficient to know Christ fully (1 Corinthians 2:14)
Spiritual truth cannot be fully understood merely through human intelligence, reasoning, or tradition.

c) Religious familiarity does not automatically produce true revelation (John 6:42)
Many people saw Jesus physically yet failed to recognise His divine identity and mission.

d) Every believer must personally answer the question, “Who is Jesus to me?” (Matthew 16:15)
Salvation and spiritual maturity require personal faith and relationship with Christ rather than dependence upon the opinions of others.

Biblical Example:
The Pharisees saw Jesus’ miracles continually yet rejected Him because spiritual blindness prevented them from recognising the truth (John 9:39-41).

2. TRUE REVELATION OF CHRIST COMES FROM GOD

Spiritual understanding is received through divine revelation.

a) Peter’s confession came through revelation from the Father (Matthew 16:17)
Jesus declared that flesh and blood did not reveal this truth to Peter, but God Himself opened his understanding.

b) The Holy Spirit reveals the person and truth of Christ (John 16:13-14)
The Spirit of God enlightens hearts and leads believers into deeper understanding of Jesus.

c) Spiritual revelation produces conviction and certainty (Ephesians 1:17-18)
Divine revelation opens the eyes of understanding and strengthens faith in God’s truth.

d) Knowing Christ personally transforms the entire life (Philippians 3:8-10)
Genuine revelation moves beyond religion into intimate fellowship and wholehearted devotion to Christ.

Biblical Example:
Paul encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus, and that revelation completely transformed his life, purpose, and ministry (Acts 9:1-6).

3. JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD

The identity of Christ is central to the Christian faith.

a) Jesus is the promised Messiah and Saviour (John 1:41)
Christ came to fulfil God’s redemptive plan and bring salvation to humanity.

b) Jesus is the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16)
He possesses divine authority, power, holiness, and eternal nature.

c) Christ is Lord over all creation (Colossians 1:15-18)
All things were created through Him, and all authority belongs unto Him.

d) Eternal life is found only through Jesus Christ (John 14:6)
Salvation, reconciliation with God, and eternal hope are available only through faith in Christ.

Biblical Example:
Thomas recognised Jesus as “My Lord and my God” after encountering the risen Christ personally (John 20:27-29).

4. THE REVELATION OF CHRIST ESTABLISHES BELIEVERS FIRMLY

A true knowledge of Christ produces stability and spiritual strength.

a) Jesus said He would build His church upon this revelation (Matthew 16:18)
The church stands securely upon the truth of who Christ is.

b) Revelation of Christ strengthens believers against deception (Ephesians 4:13-14)
Spiritual maturity and discernment grow through deeper knowledge of Jesus and His truth.

c) Knowing Christ produces boldness, confidence, and endurance (2 Timothy 1:12)
Believers who truly know Christ remain steadfast during trials and persecution.

d) The revelation of Christ transforms character and destiny (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Continual fellowship with Jesus changes believers gradually into His image.

Biblical Example:
Peter became bold and spiritually strong after receiving deeper revelation and empowerment through Christ and the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:13).

CONCLUSION

The revelation of Christ is the foundation of true Christianity. Jesus is not merely a prophet, teacher, or historical figure; He is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

True spiritual transformation begins when believers encounter Jesus personally through divine revelation. This revelation strengthens faith, deepens worship, establishes truth, and produces lasting spiritual maturity.

Every believer must continually seek deeper knowledge and understanding of Christ through prayer, the Word of God, and fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
