Description: This study teaches believers the importance of listening to Jesus Christ above every other voice, influence, opinion, or distraction in life.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 17, during the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus revealed His divine glory before Peter, James, and John. Moses and Elijah also appeared speaking with Him. As Peter attempted to focus equally on all three, a voice from heaven interrupted him, declaring: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”
This declaration from God the Father established the supreme authority of Jesus Christ above all others. Moses represented the Law, Elijah represented the Prophets, but Jesus stood as the fulfilment of both and the final revelation of God to humanity.
Today, believers live in a world filled with countless voices competing for attention: worldly philosophies, social pressures, false teachings, fear, human opinions, sinful desires, and deceptive influences. Many people are confused spiritually because they listen more to culture, emotions, trends, or human wisdom than to Christ.
God’s command remains clear: “Hear ye him.” True direction, peace, wisdom, truth, and eternal life are found only through listening to Jesus and obeying His Word.
1. JESUS IS GOD’S FINAL AND SUPREME VOICE
Christ carries divine authority above every other voice.
a) God the Father publicly affirmed Jesus as His beloved Son (Matthew 17:5)
This declaration confirmed Christ’s divine identity, authority, and unique relationship with the Father.
b) Jesus is the final revelation of God to humanity (Hebrews 1:1-2)
While God spoke through prophets in previous generations, He has now spoken fully through His Son.
c) Christ alone possesses the words of eternal life (John 6:68)
True salvation, wisdom, and spiritual direction are found only through Jesus.
d) Believers must submit fully to Christ’s authority and teaching (Matthew 28:18-20)
Following Jesus involves obedience, trust, and surrender to His Word above human opinions.
Biblical Example:
Mary instructed the servants at Cana to obey Jesus completely, and their obedience resulted in a miracle manifestation (John 2:5-9).
2. MANY VOICES COMPETE FOR THE ATTENTION OF BELIEVERS
Spiritual discernment is necessary in a world filled with distractions and deception.
a) False teachings and worldly philosophies can lead believers astray (Colossians 2:8)
Many ideas appear attractive and wise outwardly yet oppose God’s truth.
b) Fear, emotions, and human opinions often drown out God’s voice (Proverbs 29:25)
Listening excessively to people rather than God can lead to compromise and confusion.
c) Satan continually seeks to deceive and mislead believers (John 8:44)
The enemy uses lies, temptation, and distraction to weaken faith and obedience.
d) Spiritual maturity requires discernment between truth and error (1 John 4:1)
Believers must test every teaching and influence through Scripture and the Holy Spirit.
Biblical Example:
Eve listened to the serpent instead of obeying God’s instruction, leading to deception and spiritual downfall (Genesis 3:1-6).
3. JESUS SPEAKS THROUGH HIS WORD AND THE HOLY SPIRIT
Believers hear Christ clearly through Scripture and spiritual fellowship.
a) God’s Word provides direction and wisdom for life (Psalm 119:105)
The Scriptures reveal God’s character, truth, promises, and instructions for believers.
b) The Holy Spirit guides believers into truth (John 16:13)
The Spirit helps Christians understand and apply God’s Word correctly.
c) Jesus speaks to those who belong to Him (John 10:27)
True believers learn to recognise Christ’s voice through relationship and fellowship with Him.
d) Prayer and fellowship deepen spiritual sensitivity (Jeremiah 33:3)
Spending time with God helps believers become more attentive to His leading and direction.
Biblical Example:
Samuel learned to recognise and respond to God’s voice through instruction, humility, and attentiveness (1 Samuel 3:1-10).
4. LISTENING TO JESUS BRINGS DIRECTION, PEACE, AND LIFE
Obedience to Christ leads to blessing and spiritual stability.
a) Jesus leads believers in the right path (Isaiah 30:21)
God provides guidance and direction for those who listen attentively to Him.
b) Obedience to Christ produces spiritual stability (Matthew 7:24-25)
Those who hear and practise God’s Word remain strong during trials and storms.
c) Listening to Jesus protects believers from deception and destruction (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Trusting God wholeheartedly prevents many spiritual errors and dangers.
d) Fellowship with Christ brings peace, joy, and eternal life (John 14:27)
God’s presence comforts and strengthens believers who remain close to Him.
Biblical Example:
Noah obeyed God’s instructions completely despite opposition, and his obedience preserved his household from destruction (Genesis 6:13-22).
CONCLUSION
God the Father commanded believers to listen to Jesus above every other voice. Christ alone is the final authority, the source of truth, and the giver of eternal life.
In a world filled with confusion, deception, distractions, and competing voices, believers must remain grounded in God’s Word and sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Listening to Jesus requires humility, obedience, spiritual discipline, and continual fellowship with Him.
Those who hear and obey Christ will experience divine direction, spiritual stability, peace, protection, and lasting victory.
