Description: This study reveals the importance of spiritual renewal, flexibility, and transformation in receiving the new work God desires to do in believers’ lives.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 9, Jesus used the illustration of new wine and old wineskins to explain the difference between the old religious system and the new life and covenant He came to establish. In ancient times, wine was stored in animal skins. New wine expanded during fermentation, so old and hardened wineskins could not contain it without bursting.
Jesus used this illustration to teach that old mindsets, traditions, sinful habits, and hardened hearts cannot contain the fresh work of God. To experience spiritual growth, revival, transformation, and deeper fellowship with God, believers must become spiritually renewed and yielded to the Holy Spirit.
God desires to pour “new wine” — fresh grace, revelation, power, direction, and spiritual growth — into lives that are prepared and surrendered to Him.
1. GOD DESIRES TO DO A NEW THING
The Lord continually works to renew and transform His people.
a) Jesus spoke of “new wine” (Matthew 9:17)
The new wine represents fresh spiritual life, grace, and the work of the Holy Spirit.
b) God promises new beginnings (Isaiah 43:18-19)
The Lord is able to bring renewal, restoration, and fresh direction.
c) Christ established a new covenant (Luke 22:20)
Salvation through Christ brings believers into a new relationship with God.
d) God desires continual spiritual growth (Philippians 3:13-14)
Believers must continue pressing forward in spiritual maturity.
Biblical Example:
After Pentecost, the disciples experienced fresh power and boldness through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4).
2. OLD WINESKINS REPRESENT OLD MINDSETS AND HABITS
Spiritual growth requires letting go of unhealthy patterns.
a) Old wineskins could not contain new wine (Matthew 9:17)
Hardened hearts and rigid attitudes hinder spiritual renewal.
b) Believers must renew their minds (Romans 12:2)
Transformation begins through aligning the mind with God’s truth.
c) Sinful habits and traditions can resist God’s work (Mark 7:8)
Religious pride and stubbornness hinder spiritual progress.
d) God desires soft and responsive hearts (Ezekiel 36:26)
The Lord replaces hardened hearts with hearts sensitive to His Spirit.
Biblical Example:
The Pharisees resisted Jesus because they clung to tradition rather than embracing God’s new work through Christ (Matthew 23:13).
3. GOD PREPARES BELIEVERS TO RECEIVE NEW WINE
Spiritual renewal requires surrender and readiness.
a) New wineskins are flexible and prepared (Matthew 9:17)
Yielded hearts are able to receive fresh direction from God.
b) The Holy Spirit renews believers inwardly (Titus 3:5)
Spiritual transformation comes through God’s power and grace.
c) Prayer and fellowship with God prepare the heart (Psalm 51:10)
Seeking God sincerely produces inner renewal.
d) Obedience positions believers for greater spiritual capacity (John 14:21)
God entrusts more to those who walk faithfully with Him.
Biblical Example:
Samuel remained sensitive and obedient to God’s voice from a young age, becoming a vessel for God’s purposes (1 Samuel 3:1-10).
4. NEW WINE PRODUCES SPIRITUAL FRUITFULNESS AND POWER
Renewed believers become fruitful and effective for God.
a) The Holy Spirit produces spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22-23)
God’s work within believers changes character and conduct.
b) Spiritual renewal brings boldness and effectiveness (Acts 4:31)
God empowers renewed believers for ministry and witness.
c) Fresh oil brings strength and joy (Psalm 92:10)
God renews spiritual vitality continually.
d) Renewed believers glorify God through fruitful lives (John 15:5)
Abiding in Christ produces lasting impact and growth.
Biblical Example:
Peter, once fearful and unstable, became bold and powerful after being renewed and filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:14-41).
CONCLUSION
Jesus taught that new wine requires new wineskins. God desires to do fresh works in the lives of His people, but believers must remain spiritually renewed, humble, flexible, and yielded to Him.
Old habits, pride, traditions, and hardened hearts cannot contain the fullness of what God desires to release. Through surrender, obedience, prayer, and the work of the Holy Spirit, believers become prepared vessels for God’s fresh anointing, power, and purpose.
