Description: This study teaches believers that true greatness in God’s kingdom is achieved through humility, sacrifice, and faithful service to God and humanity.

INTRODUCTION

In Matthew chapter 20, the mother of James and John approached Jesus requesting positions of honour and authority for her sons in His kingdom. The other disciples became displeased, revealing selfish ambition and competition among them. Jesus then used the situation to teach an important kingdom principle: greatness is not found in status, power, or recognition, but in humble service.

The world often defines greatness through wealth, fame, influence, titles, and authority. However, God’s kingdom operates differently. Jesus taught that those who desire greatness must become servants, and those who desire leadership must be willing to serve others sacrificially.

Jesus Himself became the perfect example of servant leadership. Although He was Lord of all, He humbled Himself, served humanity, and gave His life for the salvation of mankind.

Believers are called to follow Christ’s example by serving others with humility, love, sincerity, and faithfulness. Greatness through service reflects spiritual maturity and reveals the true character of Christ.

1. GOD’S DEFINITION OF GREATNESS DIFFERS FROM THE WORLD’S SYSTEM

Kingdom greatness is rooted in humility and service.

a) Jesus corrected worldly ideas about leadership and greatness (Matthew 20:25-26)
God’s kingdom values humility above pride and domination.

b) The world often seeks power, recognition, and control (Ecclesiastes 4:4)
Human ambition frequently promotes selfish competition.

c) God honours servant-hearted leadership (Mark 10:43)
Spiritual greatness is measured by willingness to serve faithfully.

d) Humility reflects spiritual maturity and wisdom (Proverbs 15:33)
God exalts those who humble themselves before Him.

Biblical Example:
David served faithfully as a shepherd and servant before God elevated him to become king over Israel (1 Samuel 16:11-13).

2. JESUS CHRIST IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Christ demonstrated greatness through humility and sacrifice.

a) Jesus came to serve rather than to be served (Matthew 20:28)
The Son of God willingly ministered to humanity with compassion and humility.

b) Christ humbled Himself in obedience to God (Philippians 2:5-8)
His life revealed complete surrender and sacrificial love.

c) Jesus performed practical acts of humble service (John 13:12-15)
Washing the disciples’ feet demonstrated servant leadership.

d) Christ gave His life as a ransom for many (John 15:13)
The highest form of service is sacrificial love for others.

Biblical Example:
Jesus fed the hungry, healed the sick, comforted the brokenhearted, and ministered continually to people in need throughout His earthly ministry.

3. TRUE SERVICE REQUIRES HUMILITY AND SELFLESSNESS

Godly service flows from love rather than selfish ambition.

a) Believers must avoid selfish ambition and pride (Philippians 2:3)
Service should not be motivated by competition or personal glory.

b) Genuine service requires love and compassion (Galatians 5:13)
Believers are called to serve one another through love.

c) Humility strengthens unity and peace among believers (Ephesians 4:2-3)
Servant-hearted attitudes promote harmony within the church.

d) God sees and rewards faithful hidden service (Matthew 6:3-4)
True servants seek God’s approval rather than human praise.

Biblical Example:
Dorcas faithfully served the poor and needy through acts of kindness and generosity, becoming a blessing to many people (Acts 9:36-39).

4. GOD EXALTS THOSE WHO SERVE FAITHFULLY

Humble service attracts divine honour and reward.

a) God exalts those who humble themselves (1 Peter 5:5-6)
Humility positions believers for divine promotion.

b) Faithful servants receive eternal rewards (Colossians 3:23-24)
Every labour done for God carries lasting value.

c) Service develops spiritual character and maturity (Romans 5:3-4)
Serving others strengthens patience, compassion, and perseverance.

d) Servant-hearted believers become instruments of kingdom impact (2 Timothy 2:21)
God uses yielded vessels for greater assignments.

Biblical Example:
Joseph faithfully served in Potiphar’s house and prison before God elevated him to influence an entire nation (Genesis 41:39-41).

CONCLUSION

Jesus taught that greatness in God’s kingdom comes through humble service rather than worldly ambition, pride, or desire for recognition. Christ Himself became the greatest example of servant leadership by humbling Himself and giving His life for humanity.

Believers are called to serve God and others with sincerity, humility, love, and faithfulness. True greatness is revealed through sacrificial service, compassion, obedience, and willingness to place others above selfish ambition.

As believers serve faithfully, God strengthens, promotes, and rewards them according to His divine purpose and grace.
