A HOUSE DIVIDED CANNOT STAND

A HOUSE DIVIDED CANNOT STAND

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 12:22-30

Key Verse: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.” (Matthew 12:25)

Supporting Texts: Mark 3:24-25, Psalm 133:1, Amos 3:3, Ephesians 4:3, 1 Corinthians 1:10

Description: This study reveals the danger of division, disunity, and internal conflict, and emphasises the importance of unity, agreement, and spiritual harmony in families, churches, relationships, and nations.

INTRODUCTION

In Matthew chapter 12, Jesus healed a man possessed with a demon, blind, and dumb. Instead of glorifying God, the Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub. Jesus responded by exposing the foolishness of their accusation, declaring that “every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation.”

Division weakens strength, destroys progress, and opens doors to destruction. Whether in families, churches, ministries, relationships, organisations, or nations, disunity produces instability and collapse. Satan understands the power of division and constantly seeks to sow confusion, offence, strife, and misunderstanding among people.

God, however, desires unity, peace, cooperation, and love among His people. Where unity exists, strength, blessing, and progress are released.

1. DIVISION BRINGS WEAKNESS AND DESTRUCTION

Disunity destroys strength, stability, and progress.

a) Jesus said a divided kingdom cannot stand (Matthew 12:25)
Internal conflict weakens any group or relationship.

b) Division creates desolation and collapse (Mark 3:24-25)
Constant strife destroys peace and productivity.

c) Satan uses division as a weapon against people (John 10:10)
The enemy seeks to divide families, churches, and communities.

d) Offence and unforgiveness fuel disunity (Hebrews 12:15)
Bitterness damages relationships and spiritual growth.

Biblical Example:
The kingdom of Israel became divided after Solomon’s reign, leading to national weakness and eventual destruction (1 Kings 12:16-19).

2. UNITY RELEASES STRENGTH AND BLESSING

God honours agreement and harmony among His people.

a) Unity attracts God’s blessing (Psalm 133:1-3)
God commands blessing where brethren dwell together in unity.

b) Agreement produces spiritual power (Matthew 18:19-20)
United prayer and purpose bring divine intervention.

c) Love preserves unity (Colossians 3:13-14)
Compassion and forgiveness strengthen relationships.

d) The early Church prospered in unity (Acts 2:44-47)
Spiritual growth and miracles increased through togetherness.

Biblical Example:
The builders of the Tower of Babel achieved much because of unity before God scattered them due to wrong motives (Genesis 11:1-6).

3. SATAN SEEKS TO DIVIDE GOD’S PEOPLE

The enemy works through confusion, pride, and strife.

a) The Pharisees opposed Jesus through jealousy and accusation (Matthew 12:24)
Envy and pride often create unnecessary conflict.

b) Strife opens doors to confusion and evil works (James 3:16)
Disorder grows where envy and selfish ambition exist.

c) Gossip and careless words create division (Proverbs 16:28)
Words can destroy trust and relationships.

d) Pride prevents reconciliation and peace (Proverbs 13:10)
Humility is necessary for unity and restoration.

Biblical Example:
Absalom created division in Israel through manipulation and rebellion against his father David (2 Samuel 15:1-6).

4. BELIEVERS MUST PURSUE UNITY AND PEACE

God calls His people to live in harmony and spiritual agreement.

a) Believers are called to maintain unity (Ephesians 4:3)
Unity requires effort, humility, and patience.

b) Christ prayed for unity among His followers (John 17:21)
Unity reflects God’s nature and brings glory to Him

c) Peace should rule relationships and fellowship (Romans 12:18)
Believers must pursue peace whenever possible.

d) Love overcomes division and conflict (1 Peter 4:8)
Genuine love covers offences and restores fellowship.

Biblical Example:
Paul encouraged the Corinthian church to reject divisions and remain united in Christ (1 Corinthians 1:10).

CONCLUSION

Jesus declared that a house divided against itself cannot stand. Division weakens families, churches, ministries, and nations, while unity releases strength, peace, progress, and divine blessing.

Believers must guard against pride, unforgiveness, gossip, jealousy, and strife. Through humility, love, forgiveness, and cooperation, God’s people can walk in unity and experience His favour and power.

A HOUSE DIVIDED CANNOT STAND

A HOUSE DIVIDED CANNOT STAND

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Luke 11:14-26

Key Verse: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.” — Luke 11:17

Supporting Texts: Mark 3:24-25, Amos 3:3, Ephesians 4:3, 1 Corinthians 1:10, Psalm 133:1

Description: Unity strengthens spiritual authority, while division opens the door to defeat and destruction.

INTRODUCTION

Unity is a fundamental principle in both the natural and spiritual realms. Wherever there is unity, there is strength, stability, and progress; but wherever division exists, weakness, confusion, and eventual collapse follow. Jesus emphasised this truth when He declared that a house divided against itself cannot stand. This principle applies to families, churches, ministries, and even individual lives.

In Luke 11:14-26, Jesus addressed accusations that He was casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub. In response, He revealed the impossibility of Satan working against himself, using this as a powerful illustration of the destructive nature of division. His teaching goes beyond the immediate context to establish a universal spiritual truth: division leads to desolation, while unity preserves and strengthens.

This message calls believers to examine their lives, relationships, and spiritual alignment. Whether in our homes, churches, or personal walk with God, unity must be intentionally cultivated. A divided life cannot experience sustained victory, but a united life invites God’s power and presence.

1. DIVISION WEAKENS AND DESTROYS

Division creates instability that ultimately leads to collapse and loss.

a) Internal Conflict Leads to Destruction (Luke 11:17)
Jesus clearly stated that any kingdom or house divided against itself will inevitably fall apart, because internal conflict erodes strength from within.

b) The Strategy of the Enemy (John 10:10)
The enemy deliberately sows discord and disunity as a strategy to weaken believers and render them ineffective spiritually.

c) Loss of Direction and Purpose (James 3:16)
Where there is envy and strife, confusion and every evil work will follow, making it impossible to maintain clarity of purpose.

d) Gradual Collapse (Proverbs 18:1)
Isolation and separation from unity gradually lead to destruction, as individuals become disconnected from support and accountability.

Biblical Example: The kingdom of Israel was divided after Solomon’s reign, leading to weakness, instability, and eventual captivity (1 Kings 12:16-20).

2. UNITY IS ESSENTIAL FOR SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY

Unity strengthens believers and releases divine power.

a) Agreement Brings Power (Amos 3:3)
Walking together in agreement is essential for progress, as unity aligns hearts and purposes.

b) The Power of Oneness (Ephesians 4:3)
Believers are called to diligently preserve unity, recognising that it is a bond that sustains spiritual strength.

c) Strength in Unity (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
Unity multiplies strength and provides support, making it difficult for opposition to prevail.

d) God Commands Blessing in Unity (Psalm 133:1-3)
Where unity exists, God releases His blessing, presence, and life in abundance.

Biblical Example: The early Church operated in unity, and as a result, great power and grace were evident among them (Acts 4:32-33).

3. A DIVIDED HEART HINDERS SPIRITUAL VICTORY

Internal division within a believer weakens faith and spiritual effectiveness.

a) Double-Mindedness (James 1:8)
A double-minded person is unstable in all their ways, lacking consistency and spiritual strength.

b) Divided Loyalty (Matthew 6:24)
One cannot serve two masters, as divided allegiance leads to confusion and spiritual compromise.

c) Inconsistency in Faith (Hosea 10:2)
A divided heart cannot fully please God, because it lacks wholehearted devotion.

d) The Need for Wholehearted Commitment (Deuteronomy 6:5)
God requires complete love and devotion, which brings stability and spiritual clarity.

Biblical Example: Elijah challenged Israel on Mount Carmel to stop wavering between God and Baal, exposing the danger of a divided heart (1 Kings 18:21).

4. FILLING YOUR LIFE WITH GOD PREVENTS SPIRITUAL VACUUM

Victory is sustained by maintaining a life filled with God’s presence.

a) The Danger of Emptiness (Luke 11:24-26)
When an unclean spirit leaves and finds the place empty, it returns with greater force, showing that emptiness invites greater bondage.

b) Continuous Spiritual Growth (2 Peter 3:18)
Believers must grow in grace and knowledge to remain spiritually strong and guarded.

c) Filling Your Life with the Word (Colossians 3:16)
The Word of God must dwell richly within, occupying every area of life.

d) Walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
Living by the Spirit prevents the works of the flesh and sustains victory.

Biblical Example: After experiencing deliverance, the early believers continued steadfastly in doctrine, fellowship, and prayer, maintaining spiritual strength (Acts 2:42).

CONCLUSION

A house divided cannot stand—this truth applies to every area of life. Division brings weakness and destruction, while unity produces strength, stability, and victory. Whether in your heart, your home, or your relationships, unity must be protected and nurtured intentionally.

Choose unity today. Align your heart fully with God, pursue peace with others, and fill your life with His presence. As you do, you will experience spiritual strength, divine favour, and lasting victory in every area of your life.

7. Lord, help me to remain spiritually filled at all times in Jesus name.

8. Father, strengthen my spiritual life against every attack of the enemy in Jesus name.

9. Lord, let Your presence dwell richly in my life in Jesus name.

10. Father, let my life reflect unity, strength, and stability in Jesus name.
