Description: This study reveals the realities of spiritual opposition believers face in the world and the wisdom, courage, and divine protection God provides for His people.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 10, Jesus warned His disciples that following Him would bring opposition, persecution, and spiritual conflict. He described them as “sheep among wolves,” meaning they would live and minister in hostile environments filled with danger, deception, and resistance.
Although believers belong to God’s Kingdom, they live in a world influenced by darkness and opposition to truth. Jesus did not hide these realities from His disciples, but He also assured them of divine wisdom, help, protection, and victory.
As sheep among wolves, believers are called to remain wise, pure, courageous, prayerful, and completely dependent upon God.
1. BELIEVERS WILL FACE OPPOSITION IN THE WORLD
Following Christ often attracts resistance and persecution.
a) Jesus warned His disciples about wolves (Matthew 10:16)
The world can be hostile toward God’s truth and righteousness.
b) Persecution is part of Christian discipleship (2 Timothy 3:12)
Those who live godly lives may face opposition and rejection.
c) Jesus Himself was opposed and rejected (John 15:18-20)
Servants should not expect easier treatment than their Master.
d) Spiritual warfare is a reality (Ephesians 6:12)
Believers battle against spiritual forces of darkness.
Biblical Example:
Daniel faced persecution and was thrown into the lions’ den because of his faithfulness to God (Daniel 6:10-23).
2. BELIEVERS MUST WALK IN WISDOM AND PURITY
Jesus instructed His followers to be both wise and harmless.
a) “Wise as serpents” (Matthew 10:16)
Believers must exercise discernment, wisdom, and spiritual alertness.
b) “Harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16)
Christians should maintain purity, peace, and integrity.
c) Wisdom protects believers from deception (Proverbs 4:7)
God gives wisdom to those who seek Him sincerely.
d) Holiness strengthens spiritual life (1 Peter 1:15-16)
A pure life reflects God’s nature and preserves spiritual strength.
Biblical Example:
Joseph walked in wisdom and purity despite temptation and false accusation in Egypt (Genesis 39:7-12).
3. GOD GIVES STRENGTH AND PROTECTION TO HIS PEOPLE
Believers are never abandoned in spiritual battles.
a) God promises His presence during persecution (Matthew 10:19-20)
The Holy Spirit gives wisdom and words in difficult situations.
b) Divine protection surrounds God’s people (Psalm 91:1-7)
God preserves those who trust and dwell in Him.
c) The armour of God equips believers for victory (Ephesians 6:13-18)
Prayer, faith, truth, and God’s Word strengthen believers spiritually.
d) God delivers His people from fear (Isaiah 41:10)
The Lord strengthens and upholds His children.
Biblical Example:
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were preserved by God in the fiery furnace because they refused to compromise (Daniel 3:16-28).
4. FAITHFULNESS TO CHRIST BRINGS ETERNAL REWARD
Perseverance in trials leads to victory and reward.
a) Jesus encouraged endurance (Matthew 10:22)
Those who endure faithfully shall be saved.
b) Trials strengthen spiritual maturity (James 1:2-4)
Difficulties produce patience, faith, and character.
c) Believers are more than conquerors through Christ (Romans 8:37)
Victory comes through God’s power and grace.
d) Eternal rewards await faithful believers (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
God honours those who remain steadfast until the end.
Biblical Example:
Paul endured persecution, imprisonment, and hardship yet remained faithful to Christ and finished his assignment victoriously (2 Timothy 4:6-8).
CONCLUSION
Jesus clearly warned that believers would live as sheep among wolves in a hostile world. However, He also promised wisdom, protection, strength, and victory for those who trust Him.
Believers must remain spiritually alert, prayerful, holy, and courageous. Though opposition may come, God’s presence sustains His people, and eternal reward awaits those who endure faithfully.
