Description: This study examines Jesus’ statement, “Many are called, but few are chosen,” revealing the difference between receiving God's invitation and responding faithfully to it. It challenges believers to live worthy of their calling and remain steadfast in their commitment to Christ.
INTRODUCTION
In the parable of the marriage supper, Jesus described a king who invited many guests to a wedding feast prepared for his son. Although the invitation was generously extended, many rejected it. Others accepted the invitation, yet one man was found without a wedding garment and was removed from the celebration.
Jesus concluded the parable with the solemn statement, “For many are called, but few are chosen.” This declaration highlights an important spiritual truth. God's call goes out to many people, but not everyone responds appropriately. Some reject the invitation outright, while others respond superficially without genuine transformation or commitment.
Being called refers to receiving God's invitation through the Gospel. Being chosen refers to those who respond in faith, remain faithful, and allow God's grace to transform their lives. God desires that all people be saved, yet only those who truly embrace His call and walk in obedience experience the fullness of His purpose.
This passage challenges believers to examine their relationship with God and ensure they are not merely hearers of the invitation but faithful participants in His kingdom.
1. GOD'S CALL IS EXTENDED TO MANY
The invitation of salvation is available to all.
a) The king invited many guests to the wedding feast (Matthew 22:3)
God's desire is that people from every background receive His invitation.
b) The Gospel is proclaimed to the whole world (Mark 16:15)
Salvation is not limited by race, nationality, or social status.
c) God desires all people to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9)
His heart is filled with mercy and compassion toward humanity.
d) Every person must decide how to respond to God's call (Joshua 24:15)
The invitation is universal, but the response is personal.
Biblical Example: Noah faithfully preached righteousness to his generation, yet only a few responded and entered the ark (Genesis 7:7).
2. SOME PEOPLE REJECT GOD'S INVITATION
Not everyone values God's call.
a) Many invited guests ignored the king's invitation (Matthew 22:5)
They allowed earthly concerns to take priority over eternal matters.
b) Some openly resisted and opposed God's messengers (Matthew 22:6)
Rejection of God's Word often reveals a hardened heart.
c) Worldly pursuits can distract people from God's purpose (Luke 8:14)
Material concerns and pleasures often compete with spiritual priorities.
d) Rejecting God's call results in missed opportunities and consequences (Matthew 22:7)
Spiritual neglect carries eternal implications.
Biblical Example: Felix heard the Gospel from Paul but delayed his response, missing an opportunity for immediate repentance (Acts 24:24-25).
3. THE CHOSEN RESPOND WITH GENUINE FAITH AND OBEDIENCE
True discipleship requires more than acceptance of an invitation.
a) The wedding guest without a garment was rejected (Matthew 22:11-13)
Mere association with God's kingdom is not enough.
b) Genuine faith produces spiritual transformation (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Salvation changes the heart and lifestyle.
c) God expects believers to walk worthy of their calling (Ephesians 4:1)
A transformed life reflects genuine commitment to Christ.
d) Faithfulness proves the authenticity of one's response to God (Hebrews 3:14)
Endurance and obedience reveal true discipleship.
Biblical Example: Ruth wholeheartedly embraced God's people and God's covenant, demonstrating faithfulness that brought divine favour and purpose (Ruth 1:16-17).
4. BELIEVERS MUST MAKE THEIR CALLING AND ELECTION SURE
God calls His people to perseverance and spiritual maturity.
a) Believers are instructed to confirm their calling and election (2 Peter 1:10)
Spiritual diligence helps believers remain steadfast.
b) Growth in godly character strengthens spiritual stability (2 Peter 1:5-8)
Maturity protects against spiritual failure.
c) The Christian race requires perseverance (Philippians 3:13-14)
Faithful believers continue pursuing God's purpose.
d) Eternal rewards await those who remain faithful (Revelation 2:10)
God honours those who endure to the end.
Biblical Example: The Apostle Paul remained faithful to his calling despite persecution and hardship, finishing his course with joy (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
CONCLUSION
Jesus' statement, “Many are called, but few are chosen,” reminds believers that receiving God's invitation is only the beginning. God calls many through the Gospel, but He desires a genuine response marked by faith, obedience, transformation, and perseverance.
The chosen are those who embrace God's grace, live according to His will, and remain faithful until the end. They do not merely hear the invitation; they prepare themselves, walk worthy of their calling, and remain committed to Christ.
May every believer respond wholeheartedly to God's call and be found faithful, ready, and approved before Him.
