Description: This study reveals the remarkable faith of the centurion and teaches believers how to trust fully in the authority, power, and word of Jesus Christ.
INTRODUCTION
Matthew chapter 8 presents one of the greatest examples of faith recorded in Scripture: the faith of the Roman centurion. Though he was not part of Israel’s religious system, he demonstrated extraordinary confidence in the authority and power of Jesus.
The centurion approached Jesus on behalf of his sick servant and believed that Christ could heal simply by speaking a word. Jesus marvelled at his faith and declared that He had not found such great faith even among many in Israel.
This account teaches believers that genuine faith is not based merely on religious activity or outward appearance but on complete trust in the authority, character, and promises of God.
1. GREAT FAITH RECOGNISES THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS
True faith understands who Christ is.
a) The centurion recognised Jesus’ authority (Matthew 8:8-9)
He understood that Christ’s word carried divine power and authority.
b) Jesus has authority over sickness and every situation (Matthew 28:18)
All power in heaven and earth belongs to Christ.
c) Faith rests upon God’s ability and power (Jeremiah 32:27)
Nothing is impossible for the Lord to accomplish.
d) Spiritual understanding strengthens faith (Romans 10:17)
Faith grows through hearing and believing God’s Word.
Biblical Example:
The centurion believed Jesus could heal from a distance simply by speaking a word, demonstrating deep confidence in Christ’s authority (Matthew 8:8).
2. GREAT FAITH OPERATES WITH HUMILITY
Humility positions believers to receive from God.
a) The centurion acknowledged his unworthiness (Matthew 8:8)
Genuine faith is accompanied by humility rather than pride.
b) God gives grace to the humble (James 4:6)
Humble hearts attract divine favour and help.
c) Pride hinders spiritual growth and dependence upon God (Proverbs 16:18)
Humility keeps believers reliant upon God’s mercy and strength.
d) God honours broken and sincere hearts (Psalm 51:17)
The Lord responds to those who approach Him with reverence and sincerity.
Biblical Example:
The tax collector who humbled himself before God received mercy and justification rather than the proud Pharisee (Luke 18:10-14).
3. GREAT FAITH BELIEVES GOD’S WORD WITHOUT DOUBT
Faith trusts God even without physical evidence.
a) The centurion believed in the spoken word of Jesus (Matthew 8:8)
He trusted Christ’s word completely without requiring physical proof.
b) Faith believes before seeing results (Hebrews 11:1)
Genuine faith rests confidently upon God’s promises.
c) Doubt weakens spiritual confidence (James 1:6-7)
Believers must trust God wholeheartedly without wavering.
d) God’s Word never fails (Isaiah 55:11)
Every promise spoken by God shall accomplish its purpose.
Biblical Example:
Abraham believed God’s promise concerning Isaac despite impossible circumstances, and his faith was counted as righteousness (Romans 4:18-21).
4. GREAT FAITH PRODUCES MIRACLES AND TESTIMONIES
Faith releases divine intervention and supernatural results.
a) Jesus responded to the centurion’s faith (Matthew 8:13)
The servant was healed at the very moment Jesus spoke.
b) Faith moves mountains and impossible situations (Mark 11:23)
Nothing remains impossible to those who believe God sincerely.
c) God rewards those who trust Him diligently (Hebrews 11:6)
Faith attracts divine response and intervention.
d) Testimonies strengthen others to trust God (Psalm 126:1-3)
Miracles reveal God’s power and faithfulness publicly.
Biblical Example:
The woman with the issue of blood received healing because she believed in Christ’s power and acted in faith (Mark 5:25-34).
CONCLUSION
The faith of the centurion stands as a powerful example of trust, humility, and confidence in Jesus Christ. He recognised Christ’s authority, believed His word without doubt, and approached Him with sincere humility.
God still honours faith today. Believers who trust in God’s power, rely upon His Word, and remain steadfast in faith will experience divine intervention, breakthroughs, healing, and testimonies.
