Description: This study reveals the difference between the broad way of destruction and the narrow way that leads to eternal life in Christ.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 7, Jesus presented two pathways before humanity: the broad way that leads to destruction and the narrow way that leads to life. This teaching reveals that not every path leads to God, and not every popular direction is spiritually safe.
The broad way represents sinful living, worldly compromise, disobedience, and rejection of God’s truth. It is attractive to many because it allows people to follow their desires without surrendering to God. However, its end is destruction.
The narrow way represents salvation through Christ, obedience to God, holiness, self-denial, and faithful discipleship. Though it may be difficult and unpopular, it leads to eternal life and true fellowship with God.
Jesus calls every believer to make a deliberate choice concerning the path they follow.
1. THERE ARE ONLY TWO SPIRITUAL PATHWAYS
Every person is travelling either toward life or destruction.
a) Jesus described two gates and two roads (Matthew 7:13-14)
Humanity is divided between the broad way of destruction and the narrow way of life.
b) The broad way attracts many people (Matthew 7:13)
Sinful living and worldly compromise are often widely accepted and celebrated.
c) The narrow way requires intentional commitment (Matthew 7:14)
Following Christ demands obedience, sacrifice, and spiritual discipline.
d) Every person must choose a direction (Deuteronomy 30:19)
God gives humanity the responsibility to choose life through obedience and faith.
Biblical Example:
Lot chose the attractive but corrupt city of Sodom, while Abraham remained committed to God’s direction and promise (Genesis 13:10-13).
2. THE BROAD WAY LEADS TO DESTRUCTION
Worldly living without God ultimately brings ruin.
a) The broad way represents sinful compromise (Romans 12:2)
Following worldly values pulls people away from God’s truth and righteousness.
b) Sin may appear pleasurable temporarily (Hebrews 11:25)
Fleshly desires often offer temporary satisfaction but lead to spiritual emptiness.
c) Satan seeks to deceive and destroy (John 10:10)
The enemy uses temptation and deception to lead people away from God.
d) The end of the broad way is eternal separation from God (Romans 6:23)
Persistent rejection of God leads to judgment and destruction.
Biblical Example:
The generation during Noah’s time ignored God’s warning and continued in wickedness until destruction came through the flood (Genesis 6:5-7).
3. THE NARROW WAY REQUIRES DISCIPLESHIP AND OBEDIENCE
Following Christ demands surrender and perseverance.
a) Jesus Himself is the way to eternal life (John 14:6)
Salvation and true life are found only through relationship with Christ.
b) The narrow way involves self-denial (Luke 9:23)
Believers must daily surrender selfish desires and follow God faithfully.
c) Obedience strengthens spiritual growth (James 1:22)
Genuine discipleship involves both hearing and practising God’s Word.
d) Few are willing to follow the narrow way consistently (Matthew 7:14)
True commitment to Christ often requires standing apart from worldly patterns.
Biblical Example:
Daniel remained faithful to God despite pressure and opposition in Babylon (Daniel 6:10-23).
4. THE NARROW WAY LEADS TO LIFE, PEACE, AND ETERNAL REWARD
Faithful believers receive eternal blessings through Christ.
a) The narrow way leads to eternal life (Matthew 7:14)
Those who follow Christ faithfully will enjoy everlasting fellowship with God.
b) God gives peace and guidance to His people (Isaiah 26:3)
Walking with God brings spiritual stability and inner peace.
c) Faithfulness produces eternal reward (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
God honours those who remain steadfast until the end.
d) The righteous shall inherit God’s Kingdom (Matthew 25:34)
Eternal glory awaits those who live faithfully before God.
Biblical Example:
Paul endured suffering, persecution, and hardship faithfully because he focused on eternal reward and finishing his course well (2 Timothy 4:6-8).
CONCLUSION
Jesus clearly taught that there are only two spiritual paths: the broad way leading to destruction and the narrow way leading to life. Though the narrow way may involve sacrifice, discipline, and opposition, it leads to peace, purpose, fellowship with God, and eternal reward.
Believers must reject worldly compromise and remain faithful to Christ daily. The narrow way may not be popular, but it is the pathway to true life and everlasting glory.
