DEALING WITH DOUBT IN DIFFICULT TIMES

INTRODUCTION

Matthew chapter 11 presents a surprising moment in the ministry of John the Baptist. The same John who boldly declared Jesus as the Lamb of God later sent messengers asking, “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” At this time, John was imprisoned and facing hardship, disappointment, and uncertainty.

This passage teaches that even strong believers can experience moments of doubt during painful or difficult situations. Trials, delays, suffering, unanswered questions, and disappointments can challenge faith and create confusion.

However, God does not abandon His children in moments of weakness. Jesus responded to John with assurance, truth, and evidence of His power. Believers can overcome doubt by fixing their eyes on Christ, standing upon God’s Word, and remembering His faithfulness.

1. DIFFICULT TIMES CAN CHALLENGE FAITH

Trials and hardship can create confusion and discouragement.

a) John questioned while in prison (Matthew 11:2-3)
Painful circumstances can affect emotions and spiritual confidence.

b) Delays and suffering can produce discouragement (Psalm 13:1-2)
Waiting seasons often test faith and patience.

c) Doubt can affect even strong believers (1 Kings 19:1-4)
Elijah became discouraged after great spiritual victory.

d) The enemy seeks to weaken confidence in God (Genesis 3:1)
Satan often attacks faith through fear and uncertainty.

Biblical Example:
Peter doubted and began to sink when he shifted his focus from Jesus to the storm around him (Matthew 14:28-31).

2. JESUS RESPONDS TO DOUBT WITH TRUTH AND ASSURANCE

God strengthens faith through His Word and works.

a) Jesus pointed John to evidence of God’s power (Matthew 11:4-5)
Christ reminded him of fulfilled prophecy and miracles.

b) God’s Word strengthens weak faith (Romans 10:17)
Faith grows through hearing and believing Scripture.

c) Jesus does not reject struggling believers (Isaiah 42:3)
Christ gently restores and strengthens the weak.

d) God’s promises remain trustworthy (Numbers 23:19)
The Lord never fails or changes His word.

Biblical Example:
Thomas doubted the resurrection until Jesus revealed Himself personally and strengthened his faith (John 20:24-29).

3. FAITH MUST RISE ABOVE CIRCUMSTANCES

Believers must trust God even when situations are unclear.

a) Faith believes beyond visible conditions (Hebrews 11:1)
Trust in God goes beyond present circumstances.

b) Doubt weakens spiritual stability (James 1:6-8)
Uncontrolled doubt produces uncertainty and fear.

c) God commands believers not to fear (Isaiah 41:10)
His presence provides strength and help during trials.

d) Prayer strengthens faith during difficulty (Philippians 4:6-7)
Bringing burdens to God produces peace and confidence.

Biblical Example:
Job maintained trust in God despite severe suffering and unanswered questions (Job 13:15).

4. GOD USES TRIALS TO PRODUCE SPIRITUAL MATURITY

Difficult seasons can deepen faith and dependence upon God.

a) Trials refine and strengthen believers (1 Peter 1:6-7)
Faith grows stronger through testing.

b) Perseverance produces spiritual maturity (James 1:2-4)
God develops patience and endurance through hardship.

c) God remains present during suffering (Psalm 46:1)
The Lord is a refuge and help in trouble.

d) Victorious faith glorifies God (Romans 8:28)
God works through every situation for good.

Biblical Example:
Joseph endured betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment before God elevated him for divine purpose (Genesis 50:20).

CONCLUSION

Matthew chapter 11 teaches that moments of doubt can occur even in the lives of faithful believers. Difficult situations may challenge emotions and raise questions, but God remains faithful and trustworthy.

Jesus responds to doubt with truth, compassion, and assurance. Believers overcome doubt by focusing on God’s promises, remaining steadfast in prayer, and trusting His faithfulness above circumstances.

No matter how difficult the season may seem, God is still working, present, and able to bring victory and restoration.

10. Father, establish my heart in unwavering faith and victory in Jesus name

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. Every spirit of doubt and discouragement is broken over your life!

2. Your faith shall grow stronger through every trial and difficulty!

3. God shall reveal His faithfulness in every challenging situation!

4. Fear and confusion shall not overcome your heart!

5. The peace of God shall guard your mind and emotions continually!

6. Every storm around your life shall produce a testimony!

7. God shall strengthen and uphold you with His mighty hand!

8. Your confidence in God shall not fail or collapse!

9. Every difficult season shall end in victory and restoration!

10. You shall stand firm in faith and finish your journey triumphantly!
