INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 16, Jesus taught His disciples one of the deepest principles of the Christian life: “Whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” This statement appears contradictory from a human perspective, yet it reveals a powerful spiritual truth.
The natural human tendency is to preserve self-interest, pursue personal ambition, protect comfort, and avoid sacrifice. However, Jesus taught that true life is discovered not through selfish living, but through surrender to God’s will and complete devotion to Christ.
To “lose your life” does not mean physical destruction alone; it means yielding personal desires, ambitions, pride, and worldly pursuits in exchange for God’s purpose and eternal values. When believers surrender fully to Christ, they discover genuine peace, spiritual fulfilment, eternal purpose, and lasting reward.
Many people spend their lives chasing wealth, popularity, pleasure, and worldly success, yet remain spiritually empty. True life can only be found in Jesus Christ.
1. SELF-CENTRED LIVING LEADS TO SPIRITUAL LOSS
Living only for self ultimately produces emptiness and destruction.
a) Jesus warned that those who seek only to save their lives will lose them (Matthew 16:25)
A life focused solely upon personal comfort, ambition, and worldly gain eventually leads to spiritual emptiness and separation from God.
b) Worldly pursuits cannot satisfy the soul completely (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11)
Material success, pleasure, and fame are temporary and unable to provide lasting fulfilment.
c) Selfish living opposes God’s purpose and will (Romans 8:7-8)
The flesh naturally resists surrender, obedience, and dependence upon God.
d) A person can gain worldly success yet suffer eternal loss (Matthew 16:26)
Earthly achievements are meaningless if the soul is separated from God eternally.
Biblical Example:
The rich fool focused entirely upon earthly wealth and comfort but lost his soul because he neglected God and eternal matters (Luke 12:16-21).
2. LOSING YOUR LIFE MEANS SURRENDERING TO CHRIST
True life begins when believers fully yield to God.
a) Jesus calls believers to deny themselves and follow Him (Matthew 16:24)
Discipleship requires surrendering personal will in order to embrace God’s purpose.
b) Surrender involves dying to sinful desires and selfish ambition (Galatians 2:20)
The believer’s old life is crucified with Christ so that His life may be revealed through them.
c) God’s purpose is greater than personal ambition (Jeremiah 29:11)
Divine plans bring lasting fulfilment and eternal significance beyond worldly success.
d) Surrender brings peace, direction, and spiritual transformation (Romans 12:1-2)
Yielding to God allows believers to experience His perfect will and renewing power.
Biblical Example:
Paul surrendered his former ambitions, status, and reputation in order to follow Christ wholeheartedly and fulfil God’s calling (Philippians 3:7-8).
3. SACRIFICE FOR CHRIST PRODUCES ETERNAL FRUIT
God honours lives fully committed to Him.
a) Jesus compared sacrifice to a seed falling into the ground (John 12:24)
Spiritual fruitfulness often requires surrender, sacrifice, and dying to self.
b) Faithful sacrifice for God is never wasted (Hebrews 6:10)
God remembers every act of obedience, service, and surrender done for His glory.
c) Temporary suffering for Christ leads to eternal reward (Romans 8:18)
Present sacrifices cannot compare with the glory God has prepared for His people.
d) God uses surrendered lives to bless others and advance His kingdom (2 Corinthians 4:11-12)
Lives yielded to Christ become channels of salvation, encouragement, and spiritual impact.
Biblical Example:
The apostles left occupations, possessions, and comfort behind in order to follow Jesus and become instruments of global kingdom impact (Matthew 4:18-22).
4. TRUE LIFE IS FOUND ONLY IN CHRIST
Lasting fulfilment and eternal life come through relationship with Jesus.
a) Jesus came to give abundant life (John 10:10)
Real life is found through fellowship, purpose, peace, and salvation in Christ.
b) Eternal life begins through knowing Jesus personally (John 17:3)
Christianity is not merely religion but a living relationship with the Son of God.
c) Believers must seek heavenly values above earthly priorities (Colossians 3:1-4)
Spiritual focus keeps believers aligned with God’s eternal kingdom and purpose.
d) Those who lose their lives for Christ will gain eternal reward and glory (Matthew 19:29)
God rewards every sacrifice made faithfully for His kingdom.
Biblical Example:
Moses chose God’s purpose above the temporary pleasures and riches of Egypt because he valued eternal reward more highly (Hebrews 11:24-26).
CONCLUSION
Jesus taught that true life is discovered through surrender, sacrifice, and wholehearted devotion to Him. Those who live only for worldly gain eventually experience spiritual loss, but those who yield their lives to Christ find purpose, fulfilment, peace, and eternal reward.
The Christian life calls believers to deny self, follow Christ faithfully, and prioritise eternal values above temporary earthly pursuits.
When believers lose their lives for Christ’s sake, they discover the abundant and everlasting life that only Jesus can give.
