Description: This study teaches believers the importance of humility in service, Christlike leadership, and the danger of pride and selfish ambition in the kingdom of God.

INTRODUCTION

In Matthew chapter 20, the mother of James and John approached Jesus requesting positions of honour for her sons in His kingdom. The other disciples became displeased, revealing competition and ambition among them. Jesus used this moment to teach a powerful lesson about greatness and service in God’s kingdom.

Unlike worldly systems where greatness is often measured by power, status, recognition, and authority, Jesus taught that true greatness comes through humility, service, sacrifice, and love for others. Christ Himself became the perfect example by serving humanity and ultimately giving His life as a ransom for many.

Serving with humility means placing God’s will above personal ambition and serving others sincerely without pride, selfishness, or desire for recognition. Humility allows believers to reflect the character of Christ and become effective instruments within God’s kingdom.

God honours humble servants, but pride destroys spiritual growth and effectiveness. Every believer is therefore called to serve with a meek, teachable, and Christlike heart.

1. TRUE GREATNESS IN GOD’S KINGDOM COMES THROUGH SERVICE

God measures greatness differently from the world.

a) Jesus taught that greatness comes through serving others (Matthew 20:26)
Kingdom greatness is rooted in humility and ministry to others.

b) Worldly leadership often seeks power and control (Matthew 20:25)
Human systems frequently promote pride and self-exaltation.

c) God values servant-hearted leadership (Mark 10:43-44)
Spiritual maturity is revealed through willingness to serve faithfully.

d) Serving others reflects Christlike character (Galatians 5:13)
Love expresses itself through humble acts of service.

Biblical Example:
Joseph served faithfully in difficult circumstances before God elevated him into leadership in Egypt (Genesis 41:39-41).

2. JESUS CHRIST IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HUMBLE SERVICE

Christ demonstrated humility through His life and sacrifice.

a) Jesus came not to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28)
The Son of God willingly humbled Himself for humanity’s salvation.

b) Christ laid aside heavenly glory to serve mankind (Philippians 2:6-8)
His humility revealed obedience and sacrificial love.

c) Jesus performed acts of service toward His disciples (John 13:12-15)
Washing their feet demonstrated humility and servant leadership.

d) Christ’s sacrifice became the highest expression of humble service (John 15:13)
True love willingly sacrifices for the good of others.

Biblical Example:
Jesus washed the feet of His disciples despite being their Lord and Master (John 13:5).

3. PRIDE AND SELFISH AMBITION DESTROY UNITY AND SERVICE

Pride weakens spiritual effectiveness and relationships.

a) The disciples became displeased because of ambition and comparison (Matthew 20:24)
Selfish desires create conflict and competition among believers.

b) Pride leads to destruction and spiritual downfall (Proverbs 16:18)
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

c) Humility promotes peace and unity within the body of Christ (Philippians 2:3)
Believers should esteem others above themselves.

d) Selfish ambition corrupts motives for service (James 3:16)
Service should flow from love rather than personal gain or recognition.

Biblical Example:
King Uzziah became proud because of his success and eventually experienced judgment because of arrogance (2 Chronicles 26:16).

4. GOD EXALTS THOSE WHO SERVE HUMBLY

Humility attracts God’s favour and promotion.

a) God gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5)
Humble hearts receive divine help, wisdom, and favour.

b) Humility positions believers for divine exaltation (Luke 14:11)
Those who humble themselves shall be lifted by God.

c) Faithful service produces eternal rewards (Colossians 3:23-24)
God honours sincere and committed servants.

d) Humble believers become vessels fit for God’s use (2 Timothy 2:21)
God entrusts greater assignments to yielded hearts.

Biblical Example:
Moses remained humble before God despite leading Israel, and God used him powerfully (Numbers 12:3).

CONCLUSION

Jesus taught that true greatness in God’s kingdom comes through humble service rather than worldly ambition and pride. Christ Himself became the perfect example by serving humanity sacrificially and obediently.

Believers are called to reject selfish ambition, comparison, pride, and desire for recognition while embracing humility, love, and servant-hearted leadership. Serving with humility strengthens unity, reflects Christ’s character, and attracts God’s favour and reward.

Those who humble themselves before God and faithfully serve others shall be honoured, strengthened, and used mightily for kingdom purpose.
