Description: This study reveals the authority of Jesus Christ over the Sabbath and teaches believers the true meaning of rest, mercy, worship, and relationship with God.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 12, Jesus and His disciples were criticised by the Pharisees for plucking ears of corn on the Sabbath day. Later, Jesus healed a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath, further provoking religious opposition. In response, Jesus declared that He is “Lord of the Sabbath.”
The Sabbath was originally established by God as a day of rest, worship, and remembrance of His goodness. However, over time, religious leaders added heavy legalistic traditions that turned the Sabbath into a burden rather than a blessing.
Jesus revealed that the Sabbath was made for humanity’s benefit and that mercy, compassion, worship, and relationship with God are more important than empty religious rituals. Christ Himself is the true source of spiritual rest and fulfilment.
1. THE SABBATH WAS CREATED FOR REST AND WORSHIP
God established the Sabbath for blessing and refreshment.
a) God instituted the Sabbath at creation (Genesis 2:2-3)
The Sabbath reflected God’s pattern of rest after creation.
b) The Sabbath was given as a command to Israel (Exodus 20:8-11)
It reminded God’s people to honour Him and rest from labour.
c) Rest is important for spiritual and physical renewal (Mark 6:31)
God values balance, restoration, and fellowship with Him.
d) Worship and communion with God are central to true rest (Psalm 95:6-7)
The Sabbath was meant to draw people closer to God.
Biblical Example:
God provided manna for Israel in the wilderness and instructed them to rest on the Sabbath day as an act of trust and obedience (Exodus 16:22-30).
2. JESUS REBUKED LEGALISM AND EMPTY RELIGION
Religious traditions must never replace mercy and compassion.
a) The Pharisees criticised Jesus’ disciples unnecessarily (Matthew 12:1-2)
Legalism often focuses on rules while neglecting love and mercy.
b) Jesus declared, “I will have mercy, and not sacrifice” (Matthew 12:7)
God values compassion above empty religious performance.
c) Religion without love becomes oppressive (Matthew 23:4)
Legalistic systems burden people spiritually.
d) Christ came to bring freedom and life (John 10:10)
Jesus restores the true heart of worship and obedience.
Biblical Example:
David ate the consecrated bread when in need, showing that human need and mercy are important before God (1 Samuel 21:1-6).
3. JESUS IS LORD OVER THE SABBATH
Christ possesses divine authority over all things.
a) Jesus declared Himself Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8)
Christ revealed His divine authority and identity.
b) The Sabbath points ultimately to Christ (Colossians 2:16-17)
Jesus fulfils the deeper spiritual meaning of rest.
c) True rest is found in Christ alone (Matthew 11:28-30)
Jesus gives peace and rest for weary souls.
d) Christ brings freedom from religious bondage (Galatians 5:1)
Believers are called into grace, truth, and relationship with God.
Biblical Example:
The disciples found peace, purpose, and spiritual rest through walking daily with Jesus (John 6:68-69).
4. JESUS USES THE SABBATH TO BRING HEALING AND RESTORATION
God’s heart is to restore lives and relieve suffering.
a) Jesus healed the man with the withered hand (Matthew 12:10-13)
Christ demonstrated that doing good is always pleasing to God.
b) Mercy and compassion reflect God’s nature (Luke 6:35-36)
God desires His people to show love and kindness.
c) Jesus restores broken lives completely (Psalm 147:3)
Christ heals physical, emotional, and spiritual wounds.
d) Believers are called to reflect Christ’s compassion (Ephesians 4:32)
True spirituality is expressed through love and service.
Biblical Example:
Jesus healed the crippled woman on the Sabbath, showing God’s desire for freedom and restoration (Luke 13:10-17).
CONCLUSION
Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. He came not to destroy God’s law but to reveal its true purpose and fulfilment. The Sabbath was intended to bring rest, worship, renewal, and fellowship with God, not legalistic oppression.
Through Christ, believers enter true spiritual rest and freedom. God desires mercy, compassion, obedience, and relationship rather than empty religious activity. Those who come to Jesus find peace, healing, restoration, and lasting rest for their souls.
