Description: This study explores the meaning of the crowd's cry, “Hosanna,” during the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. It reveals Christ as the promised King, worthy of worship, praise, and complete surrender.

INTRODUCTION

Matthew chapter 21 records the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem shortly before His crucifixion. As He rode into the city upon a donkey, great crowds gathered around Him, spreading their garments and palm branches along the road. The people shouted with joy, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”

The word “Hosanna” originally meant “Save now” or “Lord, save us.” Over time it also became an expression of praise, adoration, and celebration toward God. The people recognised Jesus as the promised Messiah and publicly honoured Him as their King.

Although many expected a political deliverer who would overthrow Roman rule, Jesus came to establish a greater kingdom, the kingdom of God. He came to save people from sin, reconcile humanity to God, and bring eternal salvation.

Today, believers are called to join that same cry of worship and surrender, acknowledging Jesus not only as Saviour but also as King over every area of life.

1. JESUS IS THE PROMISED KING

The triumphal entry publicly revealed Christ as the Messiah.

a) Jesus fulfilled the prophecy concerning Israel's King (Matthew 21:4-5)
His arrival in Jerusalem confirmed God's promise given through the prophets centuries earlier.

b) The title "Son of David" identified Him as the promised Messiah (Matthew 21:9)
The crowd recognised His royal lineage and covenant identity.

c) Christ's kingship was established by God Himself (Psalm 2:6)
His authority did not originate from men but from heaven.

d) Jesus remains King over all nations and generations (Revelation 19:16)
His reign is eternal and His kingdom shall never end.

Biblical Example
God promised David that his throne would be established forever through the coming Messiah, a promise fulfilled in Jesus Christ (2 Samuel 7:12-16).

2. HOSANNA IS A CRY FOR SALVATION AND DELIVERANCE

The crowd recognised their need for divine intervention.

a) “Hosanna” means “Save now” (Psalm 118:25)
It was a cry for help directed toward the One who could truly save.

b) Humanity's greatest need is salvation from sin (Romans 3:23-24)
Jesus came to provide redemption that no human effort could achieve.

c) Christ delivers people from spiritual bondage (Colossians 1:13-14)
Through Him, believers receive forgiveness and freedom.

d) Those who call upon the Lord receive mercy and salvation (Romans 10:13)
God responds to sincere faith and dependence upon Him.

Biblical Example
Blind Bartimaeus cried unto Jesus for mercy and received both healing and restoration (Mark 10:46-52).

3. HOSANNA IS AN EXPRESSION OF WORSHIP AND PRAISE

The King deserves honour, adoration, and thanksgiving.

a) The people openly celebrated Jesus with joyful praise (Matthew 21:8-9)
Their worship acknowledged His greatness and authority.

b) Worship recognises God's worthiness and majesty (Psalm 95:6)
True worship flows from hearts that honour God sincerely.

c) Praise should be offered publicly and privately (Psalm 34:1)
Believers should never be ashamed to glorify Christ.

d) Jesus alone deserves the highest praise (Philippians 2:9-11)
Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess His Lordship.

Biblical Example
The heavenly hosts continually worship God around His throne, declaring His holiness and glory (Revelation 4:8-11).

4. THE KING DESERVES COMPLETE SURRENDER

True worship involves yielding our lives to Christ.

a) Welcoming Jesus as King requires obedience (Luke 6:46)
Genuine faith submits to His authority and commands.

b) Christ desires to reign over every area of life (Colossians 3:17)
Nothing should be withheld from His Lordship.

c) Following Jesus involves commitment and discipleship (Matthew 16:24)
Believers are called to deny themselves and follow Him faithfully.

d) Those who submit to Christ enjoy His peace and guidance (Isaiah 26:3)
The reign of Christ brings stability, purpose, and spiritual security.

Biblical Example
Zacchaeus welcomed Jesus into his life and demonstrated genuine repentance and transformation (Luke 19:8-10).

CONCLUSION

The cry of “Hosanna to the King” was more than a moment of celebration; it was a declaration that Jesus is the promised Messiah, the Saviour, and the rightful King. The crowds recognised His authority and celebrated His arrival, but each individual still had to decide whether to follow Him wholeheartedly.

Today, believers are called to lift the same cry, not only with their lips but also through lives of worship, obedience, and surrender. Jesus remains the King of kings and Lord of lords, worthy of praise, devotion, and complete allegiance.

When Christ reigns in our hearts, we experience His salvation, peace, guidance, and eternal blessings.
