INTRODUCTION

Matthew chapter 9 concludes with a powerful picture of Jesus’ heart for people. After healing, delivering, and teaching, Jesus looked upon the multitudes and was moved with deep compassion. He saw their spiritual condition: weary, confused, helpless, and directionless; like sheep without a shepherd.

Compassion is more than emotion; it is divine love in action. It moves a person to pray, serve, give, preach, and reach out to others. The ministry of Jesus was not only marked by miracles but also by deep concern for the spiritual and physical well-being of people.

Today, God is calling believers to carry the same heart; a burden for souls, a desire for revival, and a willingness to serve humanity with love and purpose.

1. JESUS SEES THE TRUE CONDITION OF HUMANITY

God looks beyond outward appearance into spiritual need.

a) Jesus saw the multitudes as sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36)
Many were lost, confused, and spiritually vulnerable.

b) God sees the hidden struggles of people (1 Samuel 16:7)
The Lord understands hearts, pain, and spiritual condition.

c) Humanity is in need of direction and truth (Isaiah 53:6)
Without God, people wander in spiritual darkness.

d) Jesus ministered to the total needs of people (Matthew 14:14)
Christ cared for both physical and spiritual needs.

Biblical Example:
God saw the suffering of Israel in Egypt and responded with deliverance through Moses (Exodus 3:7-8).

2. COMPASSION IS THE HEART OF TRUE MINISTRY

Ministry flows from love, not selfish ambition.

a) Jesus was moved with compassion (Matthew 9:36)
Compassion led Him to teach, heal, and deliver people.

b) God’s love is the foundation of salvation (John 3:16)
Divine compassion led to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

c) True ministry serves others, not self (Mark 10:45)
Jesus came to serve and give His life for many.

d) Compassion produces action, not indifference (James 2:17)
Faith without works is dead; love must be expressed practically.

Biblical Example:
The Good Samaritan showed compassion by caring for a wounded stranger while others ignored him (Luke 10:33-34).

3. GOD CALLS BELIEVERS TO PRAY FOR LABOURERS

The need for ministry requires prayer and participation.

a) Jesus commanded prayer for labourers (Matthew 9:37-38)
The harvest is great, but workers are few.

b) Prayer releases divine workers into the harvest (Luke 10:2)
God responds to prayers for evangelism and ministry growth.

c) Every believer has a role in God’s harvest (1 Corinthians 3:9)
We are co-workers with God in His vineyard.

d) The Great Commission is for all believers (Mark 16:15)
Every Christian is called to share the Gospel.

Biblical Example:
Isaiah responded to God’s call by saying, “Here am I; send me” (Isaiah 6:8).

4. COMPASSION LEADS TO SOUL WINNING AND SERVICE

True compassion produces action for God’s Kingdom.

a) Jesus went about teaching, preaching, and healing (Matthew 9:35)
Compassion led to consistent ministry activity.

b) Soul winning is the greatest expression of love (Proverbs 11:30)
Winning souls is a demonstration of wisdom and compassion.

c) The Gospel brings hope to the broken (Luke 4:18)
Christ’s message restores the lost and afflicted.

d) Reward awaits faithful labourers (Daniel 12:3)
Those who win souls shine eternally.

Biblical Example:
Philip obeyed God and preached in Samaria, leading many to salvation and joy in the city (Acts 8:5-8).

CONCLUSION

Matthew chapter 9 reveals the compassionate heart of Jesus toward humanity. He saw the need, felt the burden, and responded with action. Today, God is calling His people to carry the same heart of compassion, to see people as God sees them and to respond with prayer, love, and action.

The harvest is still great, and God is still looking for willing vessels who will reach the lost and serve with compassion.
