INTRODUCTION
Matthew chapter 1 introduces Jesus Christ not merely as a historical figure but as the fulfilment of divine prophecy. From His genealogy to His miraculous birth, every detail points to God’s carefully orchestrated plan revealed centuries earlier through the prophets.
The Old Testament contains numerous prophecies concerning the coming Messiah: His lineage, birth, mission, suffering, and kingship. Jesus fulfilled these prophecies perfectly, proving that He is the promised Saviour sent by God.
This truth strengthens the believer’s faith because it reveals the reliability of God’s Word. What God speaks, He fulfils. Jesus stands as the living proof that God’s promises never fail.
1. JESUS FULFILLED THE PROPHECIES OF HIS LINEAGE
His ancestry was divinely arranged according to prophecy.
a) He came through Abraham’s lineage (Matthew 1:1)
God promised Abraham that through his seed all nations would be blessed, and Jesus became the fulfilment of that covenant promise.
b) He came through David’s royal line (Matthew 1:1)
The Messiah was prophesied to come from David’s house, establishing Jesus’ legal right to the throne.
c) God preserved the messianic line (Matthew 1:2-16)
Despite wars, captivity, and human failures, God sustained the lineage leading to Christ.
d) Covenant promises were fulfilled (2 Samuel 7:16)
Jesus fulfilled God’s promise of an everlasting kingdom through David’s descendants.
Biblical Example:
God’s covenant with Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3) ultimately pointed to Christ as the source of blessing to all nations.
2. JESUS FULFILLED THE PROPHECY OF THE VIRGIN BIRTH
His birth was supernatural and divinely ordained.
a) Isaiah foretold the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14)
The prophet declared that a virgin would conceive and bear a son called Emmanuel.
b) Mary conceived by the Holy Ghost (Matthew 1:18)
Jesus’ conception was miraculous, confirming His divine nature.
c) Emmanuel means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23)
Christ’s coming revealed God dwelling among humanity.
d) His birth confirmed God’s faithfulness (Luke 1:37)
The impossible became possible because God always fulfils His Word.
Biblical Example:
Isaac’s miraculous birth (Genesis 21:1-2) foreshadowed God’s power to fulfil impossible promises.
3. JESUS FULFILLED THE PROPHECIES OF REDEMPTION
His mission was foretold long before His coming.
a) He came to save His people (Matthew 1:21)
The angel declared His mission clearly—to save humanity from sin.
b) He is the promised Seed (Genesis 3:15)
Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of the Seed who would crush the serpent’s head.
c) He fulfilled the suffering servant prophecy (Isaiah 53:5)
Christ’s suffering and sacrifice were foretold centuries earlier.
d) Redemption came through Him alone (Acts 4:12)
Jesus became the only way to salvation and reconciliation with God.
Biblical Example:
The Passover lamb (Exodus 12:13) symbolised Christ as the Lamb of God who takes away sin.
4. JESUS PROVES THAT GOD’S WORD NEVER FAILS
The fulfilment of prophecy confirms God’s reliability.
a) God watches over His Word (Jeremiah 1:12)
Every prophecy concerning Christ came to pass exactly as spoken.
b) Scripture is trustworthy (2 Timothy 3:16)
The Bible is divinely inspired and dependable.
c) God’s timing is perfect (Galatians 4:4)
Jesus came at the appointed time determined by God.
d) Future promises will also be fulfilled (Hebrews 10:23)
Since God fulfilled past prophecies, believers can trust Him for the future.
Biblical Example:
Noah’s ark (Genesis 7:16) proves that what God warns and promises eventually comes to pass.
CONCLUSION
Matthew chapter 1 reveals that Jesus Christ is the fulfilment of prophecy and the centre of God’s redemptive plan. Every detail of His lineage, birth, and mission confirms the faithfulness and sovereignty of God.
As believers, this truth should strengthen our confidence in God’s Word. If God fulfilled every prophecy concerning Christ, then every promise He has spoken concerning our lives shall also come to pass.
