Description: This study reveals the believer’s complete freedom in Christ and the call to live in that liberty.
INTRODUCTION
Freedom is one of the greatest gifts given to humanity through Jesus Christ. In John 8:36, Jesus declares that true freedom comes only through Him. This is not merely physical freedom, but spiritual liberty from sin, bondage, and oppression.
Many believers are saved but still live as though they are bound—held down by fear, guilt, habits, or past experiences. However, Galatians 5:1 reminds us to stand fast in the liberty where Christ has made us free and not to return to bondage.
This message is a call to embrace and walk in the reality of freedom. Christ has already paid the price; now we must live in the victory He has secured for us.
1. FREEDOM IN CHRIST IS COMPLETE
The freedom Jesus gives is total and not partial.
a) Freedom from sin (Romans 6:6-7)
Through Christ’s death and resurrection, the power of sin over our lives has been broken, enabling us to live righteously.
b) Freedom from condemnation (Romans 8:1)
There is no condemnation for those in Christ, meaning guilt and shame no longer have authority over us.
c) Freedom from bondage (Colossians 1:13)
We have been delivered from the kingdom of darkness and translated into the Kingdom of light.
d) Freedom through the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:17)
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, bringing transformation and empowerment.
Biblical Example:
The Israelites delivered from Egypt (Exodus 14:30) illustrate God’s power to bring complete freedom.
2. FREEDOM MUST BE MAINTAINED
Believers must guard and preserve their liberty.
a) Stand fast in liberty (Galatians 5:1)
We are instructed to remain firm and not allow ourselves to be entangled again in bondage.
b) Avoid returning to sin (John 5:14)
Freedom requires a conscious decision to walk away from the things that once held us captive.
c) Renew your mind (Romans 12:2)
Transformation of the mind helps sustain the freedom we have received.
d) Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
Living by the Spirit ensures victory over the desires of the flesh.
Biblical Example:
Lot’s wife (Genesis 19:26) looked back and lost her freedom, showing the danger of returning to the past.
3. FREEDOM IS EXPRESSED THROUGH RIGHTEOUS LIVING
True liberty produces a transformed lifestyle.
a) Freedom is not licence to sin (1 Peter 2:16)
Liberty in Christ is not an excuse for wrongdoing but an opportunity to live rightly.
b) Serve God willingly (Romans 6:18)
Being freed from sin makes us servants of righteousness.
c) Produce the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
A life of freedom is evident through godly character and conduct.
d) Live to please God (Colossians 1:10)
Freedom empowers us to walk worthy of the Lord.
Biblical Example:
Zacchaeus (Luke 19:8-9) demonstrated transformation by making restitution and living rightly.
4. FREEDOM EMPOWERS YOU TO HELP OTHERS
Your liberty becomes a tool to bring others out of bondage.
a) Declare liberty to captives (Isaiah 61:1)
Just as Christ set us free, we are called to share that freedom with others.
b) Be a light to the world (Matthew 5:14)
A free life shines as a testimony to others.
c) Encourage others in freedom (Galatians 6:1)
Help restore those who are struggling with gentleness and love.
d) Share your testimony (Revelation 12:11)
Your story of deliverance can bring hope and freedom to others.
Biblical Example:
The man delivered from demons (Mark 5:19-20) went out to testify of what Jesus had done.
CONCLUSION
“I am free” is not just a statement, it is a reality secured by Christ. Through His sacrifice, we have been delivered from sin, bondage, and condemnation. This freedom is complete and available to every believer.
However, we must choose to live in that freedom daily. By standing firm, walking in the Spirit, and living righteously, we can experience the fullness of the liberty Christ has given us.
