By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 2 Chronicles 25:1-2
Supporting Texts: Psalm 9:1, Psalm 138:1-2, Colossians 3:16-17, Matthew 15:8-9

INTRODUCTION:
Thanksgiving is a powerful act of worship, but it is incomplete without a perfect heart. A perfect heart reflects sincerity, gratitude, and a deep reverence for God. In 2 Chronicles 25:1-2, King Amaziah obeyed the Lord outwardly, but his heart was not fully committed. This scripture reminds us that God values the posture of our hearts over outward expressions. To truly thank God with a perfect heart, we must align our motives, thoughts, and actions with His will.

1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE A PERFECT HEART?

a) A Heart Fully Devoted to God:
A perfect heart prioritises God in every area of life (Matthew 6:33).

b) A Heart Free from Hypocrisy:
Genuine gratitude flows from an honest and sincere heart (Matthew 15:8-9).

c) A Heart of Humility:
Acknowledging God as the source of all blessings is key (James 4:6).

d) A Heart That Seeks to Please God:
Everything we do, including thanksgiving, must glorify Him (Colossians 3:23).

Biblical Example: David thanked God with all his heart and composed psalms of praise, reflecting his sincerity (Psalm 9:1).

2. WHY DOES GOD REQUIRE THANKSGIVING WITH A PERFECT HEART?

a) God Sees the Heart:
He is more concerned with the motive behind our actions (1 Samuel 16:7).

b) It Honours His Holiness:
God deserves pure worship that reflects His glory (Psalm 96:9).

c) It Strengthens Our Relationship with Him:
Sincere thanksgiving draws us closer to God (James 4:8).

d) It Releases His Blessings:
A perfect heart unlocks divine favour and increase (Psalm 84:11).

Biblical Example: Solomon’s heartfelt gratitude at the temple dedication pleased God, resulting in abundant blessings (1 Kings 8:22-61).

3. HOW TO GIVE THANKSGIVING WITH A PERFECT HEART

a) Examine Your Motives:
Ensure your thanksgiving is driven by love and gratitude, not obligation (2 Corinthians 9:7).

b) Confess and Forsake Sin:
A clean heart is essential for acceptable worship (Psalm 51:10).

c) Cultivate Gratitude Daily:
Reflect on God’s goodness regularly to maintain a thankful spirit (Lamentations 3:22-23).

d) Be Consistent in Worship:
Thank God in all circumstances, both good and bad (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Biblical Example: The healed leper returned with heartfelt gratitude to thank Jesus, and he was made whole (Luke 17:15-19).

4. THE REWARDS OF THANKSGIVING WITH A PERFECT HEART

a) Divine Presence:
God inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3).

b) Divine Intervention:
Thanksgiving provokes God to act on our behalf (Acts 16:25-26).

c) Multiplication of Blessings:
Gratitude leads to increase and abundance (John 6:11-13).

d) Inner Peace and Joy:
A grateful heart experiences God’s peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).

Biblical Example: Jehoshaphat’s army thanked God with a perfect heart, and He gave them victory without a fight (2 Chronicles 20:21-24).

5. CONSEQUENCES OF THANKSGIVING WITHOUT A PERFECT HEART

a) It is Rejected by God:
Insincere worship is an abomination (Isaiah 1:13-15).

b) It Leads to Stagnation:
Without genuine thanksgiving, blessings may cease (Malachi 2:2).

c) It Reflects Disrespect for God:
A half-hearted attitude dishonours His name (Deuteronomy 28:47-48).

d) It Brings Spiritual Dryness:
Insincere worship hinders spiritual growth (Matthew 15:8-9).

Biblical Example: The Pharisees honoured God with their lips but not their hearts, and they were rebuked by Jesus (Matthew 23:27-28).

CONCLUSION:
Thanksgiving with a perfect heart is more than words or actions; it is an expression of love, faith, and devotion to God. As we reflect on His goodness and mercies, let us strive to thank Him sincerely, knowing that He values the condition of our hearts above all else.
