By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Colossians 3:23
Supporting Texts: Ephesians 6:5-8, 1 Corinthians 10:31, Proverbs 22:29, Matthew 5:16

INTRODUCTION:
Holiness is not confined to church settings; it extends to every area of life, including the workplace. As Christians, we are called to reflect Christ in our work ethic, attitude, and interactions with others. Colossians 3:23 reminds us to work heartily as for the Lord, not for men. This study will explore how believers can exhibit holiness in their professional lives.

1. WORKING WITH INTEGRITY

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters" (Colossians 3:23).

Integrity is foundational to holiness. It means being honest, trustworthy, and consistent, even when no one is watching.

a) Honesty in Work
Avoid deceit and shortcuts (Proverbs 11:1).

b) Consistency in Actions
Be dependable and reliable (1 Corinthians 4:2).

c) Faithfulness in Small Tasks
God rewards faithfulness, even in minor responsibilities (Luke 16:10).

d) Avoiding Corruption
Stand firm against unethical practices (Proverbs 29:4).

e) Biblical Example:
Daniel maintained integrity in Babylon, even in the face of opposition (Daniel 6:4-5).

2. EXCELLENCE IN WORK

"Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings" (Proverbs 22:29).

Excellence in work glorifies God and sets a good example for others.

a) Developing Skills
Continuously improve your abilities (Ecclesiastes 10:10).

b) Doing Your Best
Give your best effort in every task (Colossians 3:23).

c) Maintaining High Standards
Uphold quality and precision in your work (1 Corinthians 14:40).

d) Pursuing Growth
Seek opportunities for advancement and development (Proverbs 4:7).

e) Biblical Example:
Joseph’s excellence in managing Potiphar’s household and Egypt’s resources earned him favour (Genesis 39:2-6).

3. MAINTAINING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

"Do everything without grumbling or arguing" (Philippians 2:14).

A positive attitude reflects Christ and fosters a healthy work environment.

a) Contentment
Be satisfied with your role while striving for growth (Philippians 4:11-12).

b) Thankfulness
Express gratitude for your job (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

c) Patience with Others
Show patience and understanding towards colleagues (Ephesians 4:2).

d) Encouragement
Lift others up with your words and actions (Hebrews 10:24-25).

e) Biblical Example:
Paul and Silas maintained a positive attitude by praying and singing hymns in prison (Acts 16:25).

4. SHINING AS A LIGHT IN THE WORKPLACE

"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

Christians are called to be examples of godliness, bringing light to dark places.

a) Being a Role Model
Inspire others through your conduct (1 Timothy 4:12).

b) Sharing Your Faith
Look for opportunities to witness about Christ (1 Peter 3:15).

c) Demonstrating Love
Treat everyone with respect and kindness (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

d) Promoting Peace
Be a peacemaker in conflicts (Romans 12:18).

e) Biblical Example:
Nehemiah’s leadership and godly character inspired the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall (Nehemiah 2:17-18).

5. SUBMISSION TO AUTHORITY

"Obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favour, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord" (Colossians 3:22).

Submitting to authority demonstrates respect for God’s order.

a) Obedience to Leaders
Honour your supervisors as unto the Lord (Ephesians 6:5).

b) Respect for Policies
Follow company rules and guidelines (Titus 3:1).

c) Addressing Injustice Righteously
Handle workplace injustice in a godly manner (1 Peter 2:19-20).

d) Praying for Leadership
Pray for wisdom and guidance for your leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

e) Biblical Example:
David submitted to King Saul’s authority, even when Saul sought his life (1 Samuel 24:6-7).

CONCLUSION:
Holiness in the workplace glorifies God and impacts others positively. By working with integrity, striving for excellence, maintaining a positive attitude, shining as a light, and submitting to authority, believers can transform their work environments into places that honour God.
