By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 5:1-12
Supporting Texts: Psalm 24:3-4, Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 5:22-23, James 3:17, 1 Peter 1:15-16

INTRODUCTION:
The Beatitudes, found in Matthew 5:1-12, form the opening of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. They provide a roadmap to holy living by describing the character traits and blessings of those who walk in obedience to God. These teachings emphasise humility, righteousness, mercy, and a heart focused on God. In this study, we will explore how the Beatitudes serve as a practical guide to living a life that pleases God and impacts others positively.

1. BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT (MATTHEW 5:3)

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

a) Definition of Being Poor in Spirit
To be poor in spirit is to recognise our spiritual need and complete dependence on God (Isaiah 57:15).

b) The Role of Humility
Humility is the foundation of holy living. Without it, we cannot truly submit to God or grow in His grace (James 4:6).

c) Living in Dependence on God
Acknowledging our need for God leads to a life of prayer and reliance on His strength (Psalm 34:18).

d) The Reward: The Kingdom of Heaven
The poor in spirit are promised the Kingdom of Heaven, signifying eternal life and access to God’s blessings.

e) Biblical Example:
The publican in Luke 18:13 acknowledged his spiritual poverty, and he was justified by God.

2. BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN (MATTHEW 5:4)

"Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted."

a) Mourning Over Sin
Holy living involves grieving over sin—both personal and communal—because it separates us from God (Psalm 51:17).

b) Mourning in Trials
Trials produce endurance and strengthen our faith when we trust God’s comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

c) God’s Comfort in Mourning
God promises to be near to the brokenhearted and provide comfort and hope (Isaiah 61:2-3).

d) The Reward: Divine Comfort
Those who mourn will experience God’s assurance and restoration in their lives.

e) Biblical Example:
Nehemiah mourned over Jerusalem’s broken walls, which led to God’s intervention and restoration (Nehemiah 1:4-11).

3. BLESSED ARE THE MEEK (MATTHEW 5:5)

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

a) Understanding Meekness
Meekness is not weakness but strength under control, marked by humility and patience (Galatians 5:23).

b) The Role of Meekness in Holy Living
A meek heart submits to God’s will and treats others with gentleness and respect (Colossians 3:12).

c) God’s Promises to the Meek
The meek are promised to inherit the earth, signifying peace, blessings, and eternal reward (Psalm 37:11).

d) Meekness in Relationships
Meekness fosters reconciliation and prevents strife in relationships, which is key to holy living (James 1:19).

e) Biblical Example:
Moses, described as the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3), led Israel with humility and reliance on God.

4. BLESSED ARE THEY WHO HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS (MATTHEW 5:6)

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled."

a) Spiritual Hunger Defined
A desire for righteousness reflects a longing to live according to God’s will (Psalm 42:1-2).

b) Righteousness in Holy Living
Holy living requires pursuing righteousness through God’s Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16).

c) God’s Promise of Fulfilment
God satisfies the spiritual hunger of those who seek Him diligently (Isaiah 55:1-2).

d) Practical Pursuit of Righteousness
Regular prayer, Bible study, and obedience are steps to pursuing righteousness (Hebrews 12:14).

e) Biblical Example:
The Apostle Paul expressed his hunger for righteousness in Philippians 3:10-14, pressing toward the goal of knowing Christ fully.

5. BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART (MATTHEW 5:8)

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

a) What It Means to Be Pure in Heart
Purity of heart refers to an undivided devotion to God, free from hypocrisy and sin (Psalm 24:3-4).

b) The Role of Purity in Holy Living
Holy living demands a heart cleansed from sin and focused entirely on God’s purposes (James 4:8).

c) Seeing God Through Purity
Purity opens the door to intimacy with God, allowing us to experience His presence and guidance (Hebrews 12:14).

d) Guarding the Heart
Guarding against sinful influences helps maintain a pure heart (Proverbs 4:23).

e) Biblical Example:
King David sought purity in Psalm 51:10, praying, "Create in me a clean heart, O God."
