Title: THE KINDNESS OF GOD
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: 2 Samuel 9:1-13
Supporting Texts: Isaiah 60:1-3, Psalm 102:13, Proverbs 21:1
INTRODUCTION:
The story of Mephibosheth is a remarkable account of God’s kindness extended through human instruments. Despite his physical limitations and obscurity in Lo-Debar, God moved King David to show him favour. This demonstrates that when God decides to lift someone, He positions helpers to carry out His divine agenda. Today, God is ready to move people who matter to favour you and elevate your destiny.
1. DIVINE REMEMBRANCE LEADS TO KINDNESS
a) God does not forget His covenant
David remembered his covenant with Jonathan and sought to fulfil it by showing kindness to his descendant (2 Samuel 9:1).
b) Divine remembrance turns obscurity to prominence
Mephibosheth was hidden in Lo-Debar, a place of barrenness, but was remembered and brought to the king's palace.
c) God's kindness surpasses human limitations
Though Mephibosheth was lame, God’s favour overlooked his disability and placed him in a position of honour.
d) The timing of God’s kindness is perfect
Psalm 102:13 reminds us that there is an appointed time for favour.
Biblical Example: Joseph in the prison (Genesis 41:9-14) — God stirred Pharaoh's heart to remember Joseph at the appointed time.
2. GOD USES HUMAN HELPERS TO SHOW HIS KINDNESS
a) Helpers are instruments in God’s hands
Proverbs 21:1 states that the hearts of kings are in God’s hands, and He directs them as He pleases.
b) Helpers are moved by divine instruction
David sought Mephibosheth because God stirred his heart to remember his covenant.
c) Helpers often exceed expectations
David not only restored Saul’s land to Mephibosheth but also honoured him with a place at his table.
d) Helpers bring restoration
Mephibosheth’s life was transformed; what was lost to his family was restored in abundance.
Biblical Example: Mordecai and King Ahasuerus (Esther 6:1-11) — God moved the king to reward Mordecai.
3. THE KINDNESS OF GOD BRINGS LASTING TRANSFORMATION
a) God's kindness is undeserved yet abundant
Mephibosheth referred to himself as a "dead dog" but was still lavished with honour and blessings (2 Samuel 9:8).
b) The kindness of God reverses curses
Lo-Debar, a place of desolation, was exchanged for the royal palace.
c) God's kindness makes room for generational blessings
Ziba and his sons served Mephibosheth, showing how God’s blessings affect future generations.
d) God's kindness gives us a place of belonging
Mephibosheth dined at the king’s table continually, signifying acceptance and privilege.
Biblical Example: The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:20-24) — God's kindness restored his dignity and position.
CONCLUSION:
The kindness of God, when manifested, brings restoration, elevation, and transformation. Just as God used David to show favour to Mephibosheth, He will position people of influence to remember and bless you. Trust in His timing and remain faithful, for His kindness is everlasting.
