INTRODUCTION
In Mark 4:30-32, Jesus uses the parable of the mustard seed to illustrate the nature of the Kingdom of God. He describes how something so small and seemingly insignificant can grow into something large and influential. This teaches that greatness in God’s Kingdom often begins in small and unnoticed ways.
Many people despise small beginnings because they desire immediate greatness. However, God’s pattern is different. He often starts with something small to demonstrate His power through the process of growth. What matters is not the size of the beginning but the presence of God and the consistency of faith.
This message encourages believers to develop faith for increase. No matter how small your current situation may be, God has the ability to expand it beyond imagination. When faith is applied, small seeds become great trees, and humble beginnings lead to extraordinary outcomes.
1. GOD USES SMALL BEGINNINGS
God often starts with little to accomplish great things.
a) Small beginnings should not be despised (Zechariah 4:10)
God values the process and the starting point, no matter how small.
b) God chooses the insignificant (1 Corinthians 1:27)
He uses what seems weak to confound the strong.
c) Small seeds carry great potential (Mark 4:31)
The mustard seed, though tiny, contains the capacity for great growth.
d) God’s power is revealed in growth (Isaiah 60:22)
A little one can become a thousand through divine increase.
Biblical Example:
David starting as a shepherd boy (1 Samuel 16:11-13) and becoming king shows how God elevates small beginnings.
2. FAITH IS THE KEY TO INCREASE
Faith activates the potential within what has been planted.
a) Faith turns little into much (Matthew 17:20)
Even small faith can move mountains.
b) Faith sees beyond the present (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith perceives the future in the present situation.
c) Faith activates God’s power (Mark 9:23)
All things are possible to him that believes.
d) Faith must be exercised (James 2:17)
Active faith produces visible results.
Biblical Example:
The feeding of the five thousand (Mark 6:41-44) shows how small resources multiplied through faith.
3. GROWTH TAKES TIME AND PROCESS
Increase is gradual and requires patience and consistency.
a) Growth is progressive (Mark 4:32)
The seed grows and becomes great over time.
b) Patience is required (James 5:7)
Waiting is part of the process of increase.
c) Consistency sustains growth (Galatians 6:9)
Continued effort leads to eventual harvest.
d) God controls the process (1 Corinthians 3:7)
It is God who ultimately gives the increase.
Biblical Example:
Joseph’s journey (Genesis 37–41) shows how time and process lead to fulfilment.
4. GREAT INCREASE BRINGS IMPACT AND INFLUENCE
God’s increase is not just for personal benefit but for greater impact.
a) Growth creates influence (Mark 4:32)
The tree becomes large enough for birds to lodge in its branches.
b) Increase blesses others (Genesis 12:2)
God blesses us to be a blessing.
c) Growth brings responsibility (Luke 12:48)
To whom much is given, much is required.
d) Increase glorifies God (John 15:8)
Fruitfulness brings glory to God.
Biblical Example:
Abraham becoming a father of nations (Genesis 17:5) shows how increase leads to global impact.
CONCLUSION
The parable of the mustard seed teaches that no beginning is too small when God is involved. What matters is not the size of what you have but your faith in God’s ability to increase it. With faith, patience, and consistency, small beginnings can lead to great outcomes.
As believers, we must embrace where we are and trust God for growth. Do not despise your current level; instead, nurture it with faith and obedience. In due time, God will cause your life to expand and become a source of blessing to many.
