Description: Covetousness deceives the heart, but true life is found in God, not in material abundance.
INTRODUCTION
In a world driven by materialism and the pursuit of wealth, it is easy to measure success by possessions and accumulation. Many people equate prosperity with happiness, security, and fulfilment, yet Scripture warns that this mindset can be dangerously deceptive. Covetousness is not merely a desire for more; it is an insatiable craving that displaces God from the centre of one’s life.
In Luke 12:13-21, Jesus addressed a dispute over inheritance and used it as an opportunity to warn against covetousness. He told the parable of the rich fool who accumulated wealth but failed to consider his soul. Despite his abundance, his life ended suddenly, exposing the emptiness of riches without God.
This passage reminds us that life’s true value is not found in what we own but in our relationship with God. Covetousness blinds people to eternal realities, but contentment and godliness bring lasting fulfilment.
1. COVETOUSNESS DISTORTS PRIORITIES
Covetousness shifts focus from eternal values to temporary possessions.
a) Misplaced Focus on Material Things (Luke 12:15)
Jesus warned that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions, yet covetousness causes people to prioritise material gain above spiritual growth.
b) Love of Money (1 Timothy 6:10)
The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, leading many into destructive paths and spiritual ruin.
c) Earthly Treasures Over Heavenly Riches (Matthew 6:19-20)
Storing treasures on earth leads to loss, but heavenly investments are eternal and secure.
d) False Sense of Security (Proverbs 11:28)
Trusting in riches creates a false confidence that ultimately fails in times of need.
Biblical Example: Judas Iscariot’s love for money led him to betray Jesus, showing how covetousness can corrupt the heart (John 12:4-6; Matthew 26:14-16).
2. COVETOUSNESS LEADS TO SPIRITUAL FOOLISHNESS
A covetous heart loses sight of eternal realities and divine wisdom.
a) The Rich Fool’s Mindset (Luke 12:16-19)
The man focused entirely on storing wealth for himself without considering God or eternity.
b) Self-Centred Living (Luke 12:18)
His repeated use of “I” and “my” reflects a life centred on self rather than God.
c) Ignoring the Soul (Luke 12:19)
He prioritised physical comfort while neglecting his spiritual condition.
d) Lack of Eternal Perspective (Ecclesiastes 5:10)
Those who love wealth are never satisfied, revealing the emptiness of material pursuits.
Biblical Example: The rich young ruler walked away from Jesus because he could not let go of his possessions, demonstrating spiritual blindness caused by wealth (Luke 18:18-23).
3. LIFE IS UNCERTAIN AND TEMPORARY
Human life is fragile, and material possessions cannot secure eternity.
a) Sudden End of Life (Luke 12:20)
God called the man a fool because his life was required of him that very night, exposing the uncertainty of life.
b) No Control Over Tomorrow (James 4:13-14)
Life is like a vapour that appears briefly and then vanishes.
c) Possessions Cannot Follow You (1 Timothy 6:7)
We brought nothing into this world and can take nothing out.
d) Urgency of Spiritual Readiness (2 Corinthians 6:2)
Now is the time to prepare for eternity, not later.
Biblical Example: The rich man in the story of Lazarus faced eternal consequences after death, highlighting the danger of ignoring eternity (Luke 16:19-25).
4. TRUE RICHES ARE FOUND IN GOD
Lasting fulfilment comes from a relationship with God, not material wealth.
a) Being Rich Toward God (Luke 12:21)
True wealth is measured by one’s relationship with God and eternal investments.
b) Contentment in Christ (Hebrews 13:5)
God calls believers to be content, trusting in His presence and provision.
c) Godliness with Contentment (1 Timothy 6:6)
A life centred on God brings true gain and satisfaction.
d) Seeking First the Kingdom (Matthew 6:33)
Prioritising God ensures that all necessary things are added.
Biblical Example: Abraham prioritised God over material gain and was blessed both spiritually and materially (Genesis 13:8-12; Genesis 15:1).
CONCLUSION
The danger of covetousness lies in its subtle ability to shift our focus from God to material things. It promises satisfaction but delivers emptiness, leading to spiritual blindness and eternal loss. Life is not measured by possessions but by our relationship with God and our readiness for eternity.
Choose contentment and godliness over the pursuit of wealth. Fix your heart on eternal treasures and seek God above all else. As you do, you will experience true riches that endure beyond this life.
