Description: A true encounter with Jesus comes through the revelation of His Word, bringing understanding, faith, and transformation.
INTRODUCTION
The encounter on the road to Emmaus is one of the most profound post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. Two disciples, discouraged and confused, were journeying away from Jerusalem when Jesus joined them, though they did not recognise Him. Their experience reflects the condition of many believers who walk with limited understanding despite being close to divine truth.
Jesus did not immediately reveal His identity; instead, He opened the Scriptures to them. Through the Word, their hearts began to burn, and their understanding was enlightened. This shows that true revelation of Christ comes through the Scriptures, not merely through physical sight or emotional experience.
This passage teaches that when the Word is rightly understood, it transforms despair into hope and confusion into clarity. The Emmaus encounter reminds us that Jesus is revealed to those who diligently engage with His Word and remain open to divine instruction.
1. JESUS WALKS WITH YOU EVEN WHEN YOU DO NOT RECOGNISE HIM
God’s presence is constant, even when we are unaware of it.
a) Divine Presence in Silence (Luke 24:15)
Jesus drew near and walked with them, showing that God is present even when He seems hidden.
b) Limited Spiritual Perception (Luke 24:16)
Their eyes were restrained, revealing that lack of understanding can hinder recognition of Christ.
c) God in Difficult Seasons (Isaiah 43:2)
Even in confusion and discouragement, God walks with His people.
d) Assurance of His Presence (Matthew 28:20)
Jesus promised to be with us always, regardless of our awareness.
Biblical Example: Joseph experienced God’s presence even in prison, though his circumstances seemed unfavourable (Genesis 39:21).
2. THE WORD BRINGS REVELATION AND UNDERSTANDING
Scripture is the primary means through which Jesus reveals Himself.
a) Opening the Scriptures (Luke 24:27)
Jesus expounded the Scriptures, revealing Himself through the written Word.
b) Light and Illumination (Psalm 119:130)
The entrance of God’s Word brings light and understanding.
c) Christ-Centred Revelation (John 5:39)
The Scriptures testify of Jesus, pointing to His identity and mission.
d) Spiritual Discernment (Hebrews 4:12)
The Word discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Biblical Example: Philip explained the Scriptures to the Ethiopian eunuch, leading to understanding and salvation (Acts 8:30-35).
3. THE WORD IGNITES PASSION AND FAITH
A genuine encounter with the Word produces spiritual fire.
a) Burning Hearts (Luke 24:32)
The disciples testified that their hearts burned within them as Jesus spoke, indicating spiritual awakening.
b) Faith Comes by Hearing (Romans 10:17)
Hearing the Word builds faith and confidence in God.
c) Renewed Hope (Romans 15:4)
The Scriptures provide comfort and hope, even in discouraging times.
d) Transformation Through Truth (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
The Word corrects, instructs, and equips believers for righteous living.
Biblical Example: Jeremiah described God’s Word as a fire in his bones, demonstrating its powerful effect (Jeremiah 20:9).
4. REVELATION LEADS TO ENCOUNTER AND ACTION
Understanding the Word leads to a deeper encounter with Christ and purposeful living.
a) Eyes Opened (Luke 24:31)
Their eyes were opened, and they recognised Jesus, showing that revelation precedes recognition.
b) Fellowship with Christ (Luke 24:30)
Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread, indicating deeper communion.
c) Immediate Response (Luke 24:33)
They returned to Jerusalem to share their experience, demonstrating that true encounters lead to action.
d) Witnessing to Others (Acts 1:8)
Encountering Christ empowers believers to testify boldly.
Biblical Example: Paul’s encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus transformed him into a passionate apostle (Acts 9:3-6).
CONCLUSION
The road to Emmaus teaches that Jesus reveals Himself through the Word. Even when He seems hidden, He is present, guiding and teaching. As believers engage with Scripture, their understanding is enlightened, their faith is strengthened, and their hearts are ignited with passion for God.
Commit to studying and meditating on God’s Word. Allow it to shape your perspective, deepen your relationship with Christ, and propel you into purposeful living. Through the Word, you will continually encounter the living Jesus.
