Description: True love is expressed through practical acts of compassion towards others in need.
INTRODUCTION
Compassion lies at the very heart of the Christian faith. It is not merely a feeling or emotion but a deliberate action that reflects the character of God. In a world where people often pass by the needs of others, Jesus calls His followers to live differently; to love actively and sacrificially.
In Luke 10:25–37, Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan in response to a question about eternal life. Through this story, He redefined what it means to be a neighbour. Compassion is not limited by race, status, or convenience; it is a practical demonstration of love towards anyone in need.
This message challenges believers to move beyond words and intentions into tangible expressions of love. The heart of compassion sees a need, feels the burden, and takes action without hesitation.
1. COMPASSION SEES AND RESPONDS TO NEED
True compassion begins with awareness and leads to action.
a) Awareness of Need (Luke 10:33)
The Samaritan saw the wounded man and allowed himself to be moved with compassion, demonstrating that true love begins with recognising the needs around us.
b) Sensitivity of Heart (Ezekiel 36:26)
God gives a tender heart that is responsive to the pain and struggles of others.
c) Refusing Indifference (Luke 10:31-32)
The priest and the Levite saw the man but chose to pass by, showing how indifference can hinder compassion.
d) Willingness to Act (1 John 3:18)
Love must be expressed in deeds and truth, not merely in words or intentions.
Biblical Example: Jesus saw the multitude and was moved with compassion, healing their sick and meeting their needs (Matthew 14:14).
2. COMPASSION TRANSCENDS BARRIERS
Genuine love goes beyond social, cultural, and personal boundaries.
a) Breaking Prejudice (Luke 10:33)
The Samaritan helped a Jew despite historical hostility, showing that compassion rises above prejudice and division.
b) Loving Without Limits (Matthew 5:44)
Believers are called to love even those who are different or considered enemies.
c) Unity in Humanity (Galatians 3:28)
In Christ, divisions are removed, and all are seen equally.
d) Seeing Others Through God’s Eyes (Acts 10:34-35)
God shows no partiality, and neither should His people.
Biblical Example: Jesus ministered to the Samaritan woman, crossing cultural and social barriers to bring her salvation (John 4:7-10).
3. COMPASSION REQUIRES SACRIFICE
Helping others often involves personal cost and inconvenience.
a) Giving Time and Effort (Luke 10:34)
The Samaritan stopped his journey, attended to the man’s wounds, and ensured his care, demonstrating sacrificial love.
b) Financial Sacrifice (Luke 10:35)
He paid for the man’s care, showing that compassion often requires giving resources.
c) Going the Extra Mile (Matthew 5:41)
True compassion exceeds minimum expectations and goes beyond convenience.
d) Selflessness in Action (Philippians 2:4)
Believers are called to consider others above themselves.
Biblical Example: The widow of Zarephath shared her last meal with Elijah, demonstrating sacrificial compassion and faith (1 Kings 17:12-16).
4. COMPASSION REFLECTS GOD’S CHARACTER
Acts of compassion reveal the nature of God in us.
a) God Is Compassionate (Psalm 103:13)
God’s compassion towards His children sets the standard for how we should treat others.
b) Being Christ-like (Ephesians 5:1-2)
Believers are called to imitate Christ by walking in love and compassion.
c) Evidence of True Faith (James 2:17)
Faith without works is dead; compassion validates genuine faith.
d) Reward of Compassion (Proverbs 19:17)
Those who show kindness to the poor lend to the Lord and will be rewarded.
Biblical Example: Jesus healed the leper out of compassion, demonstrating God’s heart for restoration and mercy (Mark 1:40-42).
