Key Verse: “And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.” (Mark 7:20)

Description: This study reveals that true defilement is not external but originates from the condition of the heart.

INTRODUCTION

In Mark 7:14-23, Jesus shifts the focus from external rituals to internal reality. The religious leaders were concerned about outward cleanliness, but Jesus taught that what truly defiles a person is not what enters from outside but what proceeds from within the heart.

This teaching was revolutionary because it challenged the prevailing belief that external observances determined spiritual purity. Jesus made it clear that sin originates from the heart, the centre of thoughts, desires, and intentions. External actions are merely manifestations of internal conditions.

This passage calls believers to examine their hearts rather than merely maintaining outward appearances. True holiness is not about rituals but about inner transformation. When the heart is purified, the life will reflect righteousness.

1. DEFILEMENT ORIGINATES FROM WITHIN

The root of impurity is the condition of the heart.

a) The heart is the source of actions (Mark 7:21)
Evil thoughts and behaviours originate from within.

b) The heart influences behaviour (Proverbs 4:23)
Out of the heart flow the issues of life.

c) Sin begins internally (James 1:14-15)
Desire conceives and brings forth sin.

d) The heart can be deceptive (Jeremiah 17:9)
It must be guarded and examined continually.

Biblical Example:
David’s sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:2-4) began with internal desire before manifesting outwardly.

2. EXTERNAL RELIGION CANNOT PURIFY THE HEART

Outward practices alone cannot produce inner righteousness.

a) Rituals cannot cleanse the heart (Mark 7:15)
What goes into a man does not defile him.

b) External actions can be misleading (Matthew 23:25-26)
Clean outside appearance may hide inner corruption.

c) True purity requires transformation (Romans 12:2)
Renewal of the mind is essential.

d) God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7)
God judges based on inner condition, not outward appearance.

Biblical Example:
The Pharisees (Matthew 23:27-28) appeared righteous outwardly but were inwardly corrupt.

3. THE HEART PRODUCES EITHER GOOD OR EVIL

What is inside the heart determines the nature of one’s life.

a) Evil thoughts produce sinful actions (Mark 7:21-22)
Jesus listed sins that come from within.

b) A good heart produces righteousness (Luke 6:45)
A good man brings forth good from the treasure of his heart.

c) The heart must be filled with God’s Word (Psalm 119:11)
Storing God’s Word prevents sin.

d) Transformation begins in the heart (Ezekiel 36:26)
God gives a new heart and spirit.

Biblical Example:
Joseph’s refusal of temptation (Genesis 39:7-9) shows a heart filled with righteousness.

4. A PURE HEART IS ESSENTIAL FOR RIGHTEOUS LIVING

God desires purity from the inside out.

a) Purity begins with surrender (Psalm 51:10)
David prayed for a clean heart.

b) The Word cleanses the heart (John 15:3)
God’s Word purifies believers.

c) The Holy Spirit transforms the heart (Galatians 5:22-23)
The fruit of the Spirit reflects inner change.

d) Purity leads to intimacy with God (Matthew 5:8)
The pure in heart shall see God.

Biblical Example:
David’s repentance (Psalm 51) demonstrates how God restores a repentant heart.

CONCLUSION

Jesus makes it clear that true defilement is not about external factors but about the condition of the heart. Sin originates from within, and unless the heart is transformed, outward actions will reflect inward corruption.

As believers, we must prioritise the state of our hearts. Through God’s Word, the Holy Spirit, and a life of surrender, we can experience true purification. When the heart is right, the life will follow in righteousness and holiness.
