Description: The tongue has the power to shape lives, and it must be controlled through wisdom, discipline, and the help of the Holy Spirit.
INTRODUCTION
The tongue, though small, is one of the most powerful parts of the human body. It has the ability to build or destroy, to bless or curse, and to bring life or death. Many destinies have been shaped or shattered by words spoken carelessly. Scripture consistently warns about the importance of controlling what we say.
James compares the tongue to a fire and a rudder: small, yet capable of great impact. This reveals that if the tongue is not properly controlled, it can cause damage beyond imagination. A lack of discipline in speech often leads to broken relationships, missed opportunities, and spiritual setbacks.
However, God has given believers the grace to control their tongues through the power of the Holy Spirit. When guided by wisdom and love, our words can become instruments of blessing, encouragement, and transformation.
1. THE TONGUE HAS GREAT POWER
Words carry spiritual and emotional influence that shapes outcomes.
a) Power of Life and Death (Proverbs 18:21)
Words can either bring life, healing, and encouragement or destruction and discouragement.
b) Small but Influential (James 3:5)
The tongue is small, yet it boasts great things, showing its far-reaching impact.
c) Words Reveal the Heart (Luke 6:45)
What we speak reflects what is stored in our hearts.
d) Accountability for Words (Matthew 12:36-37)
Every idle word will be accounted for, emphasising the seriousness of speech.
Biblical Example: God created the world through spoken words, demonstrating the creative power of speech (Genesis 1:3).
2. AN UNCONTROLLED TONGUE CAUSES DAMAGE
When not restrained, the tongue can lead to serious consequences.
a) Like a Fire (James 3:6)
The tongue can spread destruction quickly, just like a fire consumes everything in its path.
b) Source of Defilement (Mark 7:20-23)
Evil words defile a person and reflect inner corruption.
c) Destroys Relationships (Proverbs 16:28)
Gossip and harsh words separate close friends and damage trust.
d) Brings Trouble (Proverbs 21:23)
Guarding the mouth prevents unnecessary trouble and conflict.
Biblical Example: Miriam spoke against Moses and faced consequences, showing the danger of careless speech (Numbers 12:1-10).
3. CONTROLLING THE TONGUE REQUIRES DISCIPLINE
Intentional effort and spiritual awareness are needed to guard speech.
a) Set a Guard (Psalm 141:3)
Asking God to watch over your mouth helps prevent harmful speech.
b) Speak with Grace (Colossians 4:6)
Words should be seasoned with grace, bringing edification and wisdom.
c) Think Before Speaking (Proverbs 15:28)
The righteous consider their words carefully before speaking.
d) Avoid Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29)
Only speak what builds others up and ministers grace.
Biblical Example: Abigail used wise and gentle words to calm David, preventing unnecessary bloodshed (1 Samuel 25:23-33).
4. THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS US SPEAK RIGHTLY
Divine help is essential in mastering the tongue.
a) Spirit-Controlled Speech (Galatians 5:16)
Walking in the Spirit helps control fleshly tendencies, including speech.
b) Words of Wisdom (Luke 21:15)
God gives wisdom and words that cannot be resisted.
c) Speaking Truth in Love (Ephesians 4:15)
The Spirit enables believers to speak truth with compassion.
d) Confession of Faith (Romans 10:10)
Right confession aligns the heart with God’s promises.
Biblical Example: Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, spoke with wisdom and power that his opponents could not resist (Acts 6:10).
CONCLUSION
Controlling the tongue is essential for a victorious Christian life. Words are powerful, and how we use them determines the direction of our lives and relationships. A disciplined tongue reflects a mature and Spirit-filled believer.
Make a conscious effort to align your speech with God’s Word. Seek the help of the Holy Spirit daily, and let your words bring life, encouragement, and transformation to everyone around you.
