Description: This study reveals the importance of recognising, honouring, and welcoming Jesus as King into our lives.
INTRODUCTION
In Mark 11:1-10, Jesus made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, fulfilling prophecy and revealing Himself openly as King. Riding on a colt, He entered the city not with military force but with humility, yet His arrival stirred great excitement among the people.
The crowd welcomed Him with shouts of “Hosanna,” spreading garments and branches on the road. This act symbolised honour, reverence, and submission to His kingship. They recognised Him as the One sent by God, though many did not fully understand the nature of His Kingdom.
This passage teaches that welcoming Jesus is more than a momentary celebration; it is a call to recognise His authority, submit to His rule, and honour Him with our lives. True worship involves both declaration and dedication.
1. RECOGNISING JESUS AS KING
Acknowledging Christ’s kingship is the foundation of true worship.
a) Jesus fulfilled prophecy (Mark 11:2-7)
His entry on a colt fulfilled ancient prophecy, demonstrating that He is the promised King sent by God according to divine plan.
b) The people acknowledged Him (Mark 11:9)
Their cry of “Hosanna” revealed recognition of His authority and their expectation of salvation.
c) True recognition requires revelation (Matthew 16:16-17)
It takes spiritual understanding to truly know who Jesus is beyond outward appearances.
d) Recognition leads to honour (Malachi 1:6)
When we truly recognise Jesus as King, our lives reflect honour, reverence, and submission to Him.
Biblical Example:
Nathaniel recognising Jesus (John 1:49) confessed Him as the Son of God and King of Israel.
2. WELCOMING JESUS REQUIRES HUMILITY
The King enters where there is a humble heart.
a) Jesus came in humility (Mark 11:7)
Riding on a colt symbolised peace and humility, showing that Christ’s Kingdom is not built on pride or force.
b) Humility prepares the heart (James 4:8)
Drawing near to God requires a humble disposition that is open and receptive.
c) Pride resists God’s presence (Proverbs 16:18)
Pride creates a barrier that prevents the fullness of God’s work in a person’s life.
d) God dwells with the humble (Isaiah 57:15)
The Lord inhabits the hearts of those who are contrite and humble.
Biblical Example:
The centurion’s humility (Matthew 8:8-10) attracted Jesus’ commendation and miracle.
3. HONOURING THE KING INVOLVES SACRIFICE
True worship is expressed through giving and surrender.
a) The people spread their garments (Mark 11:8)
This act symbolised honour and submission, as they laid down what belonged to them for the King.
b) Worship involves giving our best (2 Samuel 24:24)
True honour to God costs something and reflects the value we place on Him.
c) Sacrifice demonstrates devotion (Romans 12:1)
Offering our lives as living sacrifices is the highest form of worship.
d) Honour opens the door for divine presence (1 Samuel 2:30)
God honours those who honour Him, bringing His favour into their lives.
Biblical Example:
Mary anointing Jesus (John 12:3) shows sacrificial worship and honour.
4. TRUE WELCOME MUST BE SUSTAINED
Welcoming Jesus is not a one-time event but a continuous lifestyle.
a) The crowd praised Him openly (Mark 11:9-10)
Their public declaration shows that welcoming Jesus involves openly acknowledging Him in our lives.
b) Praise must go beyond emotion (John 4:23-24)
True worship is not just outward excitement but a sincere and consistent devotion.
c) Commitment must follow confession (Romans 10:9-10)
Declaring Jesus as Lord must be matched with a life that reflects His authority.
d) Consistency sustains relationship (Colossians 2:6)
As we receive Christ, we must continue to walk in Him daily.
Biblical Example:
The early church (Acts 2:42) continued steadfastly, showing sustained commitment beyond initial enthusiasm.
CONCLUSION
The triumphal entry is a powerful reminder of who Jesus is, the King who deserves honour, worship, and total surrender. Welcoming Him requires recognising His authority, embracing humility, and offering our lives in devotion.
As believers, we must go beyond momentary praise and cultivate a lifestyle that continually welcomes Christ into every area of our lives. When we truly honour Him as King, His presence will reign in us, bringing peace, purpose, and fulfilment.
