Description: This study reveals that riches can become a barrier to full surrender and wholehearted devotion to God.

INTRODUCTION

In Mark 10:17-27, a rich young ruler approached Jesus with a sincere question: “What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” He appeared devout, disciplined, and morally upright, having kept many of the commandments from his youth. Yet, despite all these, something was missing.

Jesus, in love, identified the one thing lacking: total surrender. He instructed the man to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him. However, the man went away sorrowful because he had great possessions. His wealth had become a barrier to complete obedience.

This passage teaches that riches in themselves are not evil, but the love of riches and attachment to them can hinder one’s relationship with God. True discipleship requires surrendering everything, including possessions, ambitions, and personal security, to follow Christ wholeheartedly.

1. RICHES CAN CREATE FALSE SECURITY

Wealth can give a deceptive sense of independence from God.

a) The rich young ruler trusted in his possessions (Mark 10:22)
His sorrowful departure revealed that his confidence was rooted more in his wealth than in God, showing how riches can quietly become a source of misplaced trust.

b) Wealth can replace dependence on God (Deuteronomy 8:17-18)
When people prosper, they may begin to believe that their success is self-made, forgetting that all provision ultimately comes from God.

c) Riches can give temporary comfort (Proverbs 18:11)
Wealth may provide a sense of security, but it cannot guarantee peace, fulfilment, or eternal life.

d) True security is in God alone (Psalm 20:7)
Lasting confidence must be placed in God rather than in material possessions, which are uncertain and fleeting.

Biblical Example:
The rich fool (Luke 12:16-21) trusted in his wealth but lost his soul, showing the danger of misplaced security.

2. RICHES CAN HINDER TOTAL SURRENDER

Attachment to possessions can prevent full obedience to God.

a) The call to surrender requires letting go (Mark 10:21)
Jesus asked the man to release what he valued most, demonstrating that anything we hold too tightly can become a barrier to following Him fully.

b) Divided loyalty is dangerous (Matthew 6:24)
It is impossible to serve both God and riches, as one will always compete for our devotion and priority.

c) God requires first place (Exodus 20:3)
Nothing should take precedence over God in our lives, including wealth, ambitions, or achievements.

d) Surrender brings true freedom (Galatians 5:1)
Letting go of attachments allows believers to experience the liberty that comes from complete dependence on God.

Biblical Example:
The disciples leaving all (Mark 1:18) shows the power of total surrender in following Christ.

3. THE LOVE OF RICHES IS A SPIRITUAL DANGER

It is not wealth itself, but the love of it, that leads to destruction.

a) The love of money leads to ruin (1 Timothy 6:9-10)
When the desire for wealth dominates the heart, it leads to harmful choices and spiritual downfall.

b) Riches can distract from eternal priorities (Mark 4:19)
The cares of this world and deceitfulness of riches can choke the Word, making it unfruitful.

c) Wealth can harden the heart (Mark 10:23)
Jesus noted how difficult it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom, not because of wealth itself, but because of the grip it can have on the heart.

d) Contentment is key (Hebrews 13:5)
A contented heart protects against the dangers of greed and keeps focus on God.

Biblical Example:
Judas Iscariot (John 12:4-6) allowed love of money to corrupt his heart and betray Christ.

4. WITH GOD, TOTAL TRANSFORMATION IS POSSIBLE

What seems impossible for man is possible with God.

a) Salvation is not based on human effort (Mark 10:26-27)
The disciples were astonished, but Jesus clarified that what is impossible with man is possible with God, showing that divine grace makes the difference.

b) God can break every stronghold (2 Corinthians 10:4)
Even the grip of riches and materialism can be broken by the power of God.

c) God changes priorities (Ezekiel 36:26)
He gives a new heart that desires Him above all else.

d) Grace empowers surrender (Philippians 2:13)
God works within believers, enabling them to will and to do according to His good pleasure.

Biblical Example:
Zacchaeus (Luke 19:8-9) encountered Jesus and willingly gave up his riches, showing transformation by grace.

CONCLUSION

The story of the rich young ruler is a powerful reminder that anything we value above God can become a hindrance to our spiritual growth. Riches are not inherently evil, but they become dangerous when they take the place of God in our hearts.

True discipleship requires total surrender. When we release everything into God’s hands, we gain something far greater: eternal life, peace, and a deeper relationship with Him. With God’s help, we can overcome every attachment and walk in complete devotion.
