INTRODUCTION
Understanding the Scriptures is essential for every believer who desires to grow in faith and walk in God’s purpose. Many read the Bible, yet not all truly understand it, because spiritual truth cannot be grasped by human intellect alone. It requires divine illumination.
In Luke 24:44–45, Jesus spoke to His disciples and opened their understanding so they could comprehend the Scriptures. This moment reveals a crucial truth: without Christ revealing the Word, it remains closed, but with His revelation, it becomes alive, clear, and transformative.
This passage reminds us that Scripture is not just information but revelation. When Christ opens your understanding, the Word becomes a guide, a source of power, and a tool for victorious living.
1. SCRIPTURE IS CENTRED ON CHRIST
The entire Bible points to Jesus and His redemptive work.
a) Fulfilment of the Law and Prophets (Luke 24:44)
Jesus explained that everything written in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms pointed to Him, showing that Scripture is Christ-centred.
b) Christ Revealed in the Word (John 5:39)
The Scriptures testify of Jesus, revealing His nature and mission.
c) Unity of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16)
All Scripture is inspired by God and works together to reveal His plan of salvation.
d) Knowing Christ Through the Word (Philippians 3:10)
Understanding Scripture deepens our relationship with Christ.
Biblical Example: The Ethiopian eunuch understood Isaiah only after Philip explained how it pointed to Christ (Acts 8:30-35).
2. REVELATION COMES BY DIVINE ILLUMINATION
Understanding Scripture requires God to open your spiritual eyes.
a) Opened Understanding (Luke 24:45)
Jesus opened the minds of the disciples, showing that revelation is a divine act.
b) Spiritual Insight (1 Corinthians 2:10)
The Spirit reveals deep things of God that cannot be known naturally.
c) Prayer for Enlightenment (Psalm 119:18)
Asking God to open your eyes leads to deeper understanding of His Word.
d) The Role of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13)
The Spirit guides believers into all truth and reveals God’s will.
Biblical Example: Daniel received understanding of visions through divine revelation, not human wisdom (Daniel 2:19-22).
3. THE WORD TRANSFORMS AND EMPOWERS
When understood, Scripture changes lives and equips believers for victory.
a) Living and Powerful (Hebrews 4:12)
The Word is active, penetrating the heart and bringing transformation.
b) Renewal of the Mind (Romans 12:2)
Understanding Scripture renews thinking and aligns it with God’s will.
c) Guidance for Life (Psalm 119:105)
The Word becomes a lamp and light, directing daily decisions.
d) Equipping for Good Works (2 Timothy 3:17)
Scripture prepares believers for every good work and assignment.
Biblical Example: Joshua prospered because he meditated on the Book of the Law and acted on it (Joshua 1:8).
4. UNDERSTANDING REQUIRES DILIGENCE AND OBEDIENCE
Revelation grows when believers study and apply the Word.
a) Rightly Dividing the Word (2 Timothy 2:15)
Diligent study is necessary for accurate understanding.
b) Meditation Brings Insight (Psalm 1:2-3)
Reflecting on the Word day and night produces fruitfulness.
c) Obedience Unlocks More Revelation (John 7:17)
Doing God’s will increases understanding of His truth.
d) Consistency Builds Depth (Colossians 3:16)
Letting the Word dwell richly in you leads to spiritual maturity.
Biblical Example: Ezra devoted himself to studying, practising, and teaching the Word, becoming a skilled scribe in Israel (Ezra 7:10).
CONCLUSION
Understanding the Scriptures is not achieved by intellectual effort alone but through divine revelation from Christ. When He opens your understanding, the Word becomes alive, powerful, and transformative, guiding you into truth and purpose.
Commit to seeking God for revelation as you study His Word. Be diligent, prayerful, and obedient, and you will grow in understanding. As Christ reveals the Scriptures to you, your life will be shaped, strengthened, and aligned with His divine plan.
